Two new strikers on Bradford City radar as Andy Gray chases Championship chance
7:20am Wednesday 4th July 2012 in Sport
By Simon Parker, Bradford City Reporter
City could miss out on Andy Gray as he chases a possible chance to remain in the Championship
City have added two new names to their striker hunt as long-term target Andy Gray eyes a move to stay in the Championship.
The Bantams have been pushing to bring Gray back to Valley Parade since they were first made aware he would be leaving Barnsley.
And while they have not given up hope of landing him, the odds have shifted since a Championship club made their interest known.
Phil Parkinson has other irons in the fire if Gray does not come off – and two more frontmen have popped up on his radar.
City are also thought to be close to a sixth summer signing in time for the start of pre-season.
Joint-chairman Mark Lawn said: “We are chasing two or three that we can’t name but they have all played at higher levels.
It’s not great news but I will be back for sure
Steve Williams
“Phil is still negotiating while he is on holiday for a few days.
“We are talking to people all the time and there are another two strikers that have popped into the mix since last week. Both have played in this division and above.”
Will Atkinson, who had a low-key loan spell last season, was announced as the latest permanent recruit yesterday, with the next expected to follow quickly.
Atkinson has been signed for midfield cover as City target a right winger. Garry Thompson, who can also play as a central striker, has been strongly rumoured to be on his way after his release by Scunthorpe.
City first tried to sign him four years ago from Morecambe but failed with a £10,000 bid which led to a public slanging match between the two clubs.
But the Bantams have played down internet reports of interest in Honduras international Ramon Nunez from Leeds.
Nunez, who scored twice against City in the Carling Cup, has been transfer-listed by Neil Warnock despite signing a new deal at Elland Road last season.
A Valley Parade source said: “We haven’t spoken to the player or his agent and won’t be pursuing him.”
Meanwhile, centre half Steve Williams – who has been told he has no future at Valley Parade – fears he will be sidelined long term after a serious injury.
Williams revealed on Twitter that he had ruptured his Achilles tendon while training and would miss “four to six months”.
He said: “It’s not great news but I will be back for sure.”
Williams has not featured for City since November and spent the second half of last season on loan at Inverness.
Young defender Andrew Burns has left the club by mutual consent.
The right back, signed as part of the ill-fated development squad, never appeared in the first team.

for the best deal, they think, they can get!.

Gray is no exception to that player thinking.

There are 3 League Matches in August. It would appear that the Supporters will need to continue to be patient over player movements. I feel we will not have the FINAL SQUAD requirements, before the first League Match on Saturday 18 August at Gillingham.

So to continue where from ALEXIMO left off, if this is true maybe it is because PP would be happy for either of the above named strikers to sign and letting the chairmen slog it out.

I was told yesterday that PP is his own man unlike PJ. That is no dig at PJ, he wasn't first choice so had to go along with what was thrown at him.

As for Gray i would have told him to get stuffed weeks ago hes messing us about and clearly aint that bothered about playing for us.It would make a mockery of the statement made ages ago of only wanting to sign players commited to the the cause.
This transfer farce is doing my head in why do we make such hard work out of it.Trying to fight it but getting a sinking feeling that were going to picking up the scraps again.I bloody hope im wrong as cant face another desperately disappointing season again.

Ive heard many numerous rumours down the years that Lawn is a control freak and a complete pratt, and was single handedly responsible for getting shut of Compton because HE didnt like him as a person! (Big mistake in my book).

1) I hope it is an additional signing not made from PP's budget
2) The manager is not forced to play him and he has to earn the right to be selected like the rest
Let's all hope there is no behind the scenes unrest :-(

Committed to the cause doesn't mean that players will sign on straight away for less money, what it means is that once they sign, they are up for a fight and are good committed professionals and are not just here for the money. Forget the likes of Fleetwood and Rotherham. They can throw enough money at players that they would be stupid to turn down the offer, whereas a club in our financial position has to compete with a number of other clubs for the signature

Why can't people just accept this simple truth? Why is everything Lawn's fault, it's bloody ridiculous. Also this garbage about chairmen fighting over which players they want is absolutely laughable. Parkinson wants Gray as he managed him at Charlton, he persuaded both Lawn and Rhodes to try and sign him as the board had reservations about his age. Parkinson has assured then that age was not an issue due to the fact that Gray is super fit. Please stop making up your nonsense and spreading lies on this website. Rant over!

On the subject of interference "from above", I've strongly suspected the freezing out of certain players was due to Board instruction. At reserve team games, I've heard comments from within that suggest a certain member of the Board's view prevails on whether players faces fit.

To be honest its all very unispiring - the signings we are making just seem to be mates of Steve Parkin - Jones G, McArdle, Thompson ( poss ), Atkinson ..a non league left back. Where are the signings Lawn said would suprise and excite the supporters ? Ok Davies sticking around was a turn up but the rest so far seem like an attempt to reassemble the Rochdale team of 4 years ago. For the life of me I cannot see whats changed to take this team any nearer promotion than last season. If we lose at Gills which we will and then we get done by Fleetwood at home because Jon Parkin is definite to score then I expect us to be starring up from the bottom of L2 from the off at this rate.
