Baldwin: Bradford City set to go for the jugular next season

Phil Parkinson came in for some criticism last season for his tactically cautious approach Phil Parkinson came in for some criticism last season for his tactically cautious approach

Phil Parkinson is ready to let City off the leash next season.

Fans can look forward to an expansive approach as the club aim to make their mark among League Two’s pace-setters.

Defensive rock Andrew Davies became the first summer capture this week and Parkinson has other offers on the table.

He confirmed yesterday’s T&A exclusive that former Bantams striker Andy Gray is among the targets.

Parkinson said: “He is one of a number of players we are looking at.”

Director of operations David Baldwin believes the new-look City will be encouraged to “go for the jugular” without the shackles of last season’s fight for survival.

Champions Swindon conceded the fewest goals and Baldwin insists that is proof that attack is the best form of defence.

He said: “Why did Swindon Town have 26 clean sheets last year? It wasn’t down to having the best defence but they were very good going forward.

“It’s very clear from Phil’s perspective what he needs to do. He’s taken a leaf out of the books of all these teams that have done well.

“The signs of improvement were there towards the end but nobody’s sitting on their laurels.

“It’s a case of getting a high tempo, enthusiastic team that goes at the opposition and wins games.”

City netted 54 league goals last season, the sixth lowest tally in the division and 25 less than top scorers Gillingham.

Critics accused them of being too cautious at times but Baldwin feels that was down to circumstances.

He added: “I agree there was an element of caution but that came from the fact that we had a team low on confidence and lacking in ability in certain areas in the early stages.

“If someone’s cut themselves, the first thing you do is stem the flow of blood before worrying about how it’s going to heal.

“When confidence is low and you’re in a situation of a lot of defeats, the first reaction is to protect your own position.

“You tend not to go for the jugular with other teams. But this time we will start from pre-season with a clear intent.”

We get there articles every year, 'this season we'll be more attacking', 'this yeah we'll be more entertaining'. While I have no doubt that it is designed to get some season tickets shifted it also builds up the expectation and more often that not just bites the director on the backside.

As for the statement about defence, yes Swindon kept the more clean sheets because they had the best defence. To say they didn't doesn't make sense. If attack is the best form of defence why does anybody bother signing defenders?

with just over 4500, season tkts been sold so far and the dealine on thursday I hope this weekend the season tkt are snapped up at a record rate.
attacking football is the only way to fet out of lge2. All the teams that have gone up seem to have deployed that system.

I think iy is clear from the Davies signing and the courting of others such as grey and etuhu that city are chasing top draw players from championship standard and above which must signal the intent of the club to have a real push this time round. Pp is and will prove to be a very good manager for city. We all thought baldwins last article on here was to get us to buy season tickets under the illusion we would be signing god players and then we all ate our words when Davies signed. lets back the board back the manager back the players and get this great club out of this awfully division. city till i die

Poor excuse Baldwin. Other sides have gained promotion from such positions and even worse.

Sorry but you argue that attack is the best form of defence then attempt to justify the opposite??????

Fact is your leaving it late to encourage season ticket sales. It should have started some time last year......

All the genuine fans and genuine SUPPORTERS of Bradford City AFC , know that during the close Season players will leave, and players will be brought in to The Club.
Some will be signed later, rather than sooner. Because of the costs of paying their salaries long before the Season starts. It is financial prudence.

Does apprentice mean you are still learning about football. If you have the ball in their half more often its a lot more difficult for them to score. Simple. Every statement made by the club is ripped apart. The club is a business so they shouldn't have to apologise for marketing or trying to drum up business.

Well said Freddy!!! I bought mine on the 10th of may. I mentioned in one of my posts that the signing of players won't really start til June. I also stated that the club might see that the s/t sales are not selling quickly enough so they MIGHT just extend the deadline to the end of June. There were of course arguments for & against. In all honesty the club have given the fans plenty of time to buy their s/t. I still believe that we will win promotion and when we do, all these that have slagged off Parky and the board will be back with Oh Brilliant Parky! best manager we have ever had at city. Their noses will be so brown, they would make an African look white. lol. all these negatrons make me laugh. Loyal supporters MY @RSE. Get out there you lot and buy your s/t and support OUR CLUB. Dann, not disagreeing with you and nobody can argue that at times last season, the football was on a par with Taylor's. However, two of PPs first three signings were Reid and Devitt. Both brought in to bring more attacking emphasis. Despite that, we still struggled to score, were still conceding at an alarming rate and continued to keep just outside the relegation places.
.
I just hope the fans back him and come down to VP to get a ticket for next season. If fans still believe all the sound-bites are merely a ploy to sell season tickets, then I hope they still buy a 50/50 card. That way, they are still supporting the club, but can vote with their feet should PP continue with his 'safety-first' tactics.
.
Surely every City poster on this board and others similar, should have a season ticket or 50/50 card for next season. No excuses.
.
We have already bagged Davies and a terrific signing he is. I would have loved to have seen a similar quality attacking player join him by now, to crank up excitement levels even more, but there is no doubt PP is trying to bring in quality rather than quantity.

it's impossible to have the ball in the opposition half, or even have possession for anything close to 100 percent of the time. you still need a solid defence. successful football teams are built on a solid defence, they always have been and they always will be, it's not and exciting or glamorous statement but it's the truth.

I think we probably are. I just wish the board would be honest that we are aiming to be a regular, successful, League Two team who play like all the other almost identical decent teams we've seen in the last 5 years at this level. This annual talk that we are going to be the Harlem Globetrotters of the bottom division does nobody any favours when it inevitably doesn't appear. To say that a team with 4 very solid defenders and the best goalkeeper in the division kept 26 clean sheets because they attack is obviously ludicrous and it leads to fans having unrealistic expectations of what a good team at this level looks like.

Well, we've rushed to sign Davies before the season ticket deadline and let slip a rumour re Andy Gray. With season ticket sales still stalling, step up Dave Baldwin! Sorry, Parky hasn't a clue what "high tempo" means, let alone how to play it.

I stated on this forum several times towards the end of last season that we'd pay for the dire, negative rubbish served up, and that's exactly what's happened.

I feel sorry for the Board and the position they are now in in having to make soundbites and spin to compensate for the shortcomings of what happened on the pitch last season. One thing's for sure, with the club dependent on 50/50 suuporters next season, a bad start will see Parky out within a month. We live in hope!

The "Width Of A Post" City supporters' website (today)gives the BEST reasons for buying a season ticket based NOT on..
a) promises about success
b) promises about new team personel
c) promises about tactics etc

City (and the Bulls re:rugby league) offer a chance for people in OUR AREA to come together and support our LOCAL sports teams. These teams have got their own identities which their fans (US) 'IDENTIFY WITH'!!

What would Saturday afternoon be..without a visit to 'VP' once a fortnight?

What else will you do between 3pm and 5pm on those days? (if you're 'City-minded')

What would it be like with NO CITY (or BULLS if you're a rugby fan)?

I'd prefer, the 'City selling line' to be offering some of these sort of reasons for buying a season ticket which I've read on "Width Of A Post" (which have in their favour they are more 'real'/ 'realistic'!!)

It doesn't matter what 'spin' they put on selling tickets as fans will still pick holes in it. The fact is, we are City fans first and foremost (not Parkinson's, Lawn's, Rhodes' etc). If we do not support financially, we only have ourselves to blame when the club goes. Parkinson could get the blame for the type of football on offer, Lawn and Rhodes could get blames for not doing more to attract new investors and/or decisions off the pitch. However, it is our support and money that helps keep the club going. Without this, the club will always struggle and will eventually succumb.

problem was that devitt played behind one man up front. Whilst he's that sort of player, was it worth changing a team around him?

We've all argued for quality over quantity for seasons now and its taken others a long time to work it out.

There is no reason that fans should purchase a season ticket IF they feel that the product is not worth it. I have mine but won't castigate others who don't. Its not just the money but the time a season ticket demands on people. Many of us are at work all week, have families etc etc Its sometimes hard to justify what becomes an whole day experience on something that has recently been quite depressing, often uneventful, fruitless, etc .....at least if we were having a go and setting out to win games then committment might be more forthcoming.

I come each and every year but often recently i've wondered that this is more a sense of duty and habit. If you were a relatively new fan then the past two seasons alone might be enough to put you off.....

Your conclusion about the 50/50 is a good point and counters those not going simply due to PP and his tactic thus far.......

we were also promised entertainment last year remember and heard the same soundbites. You can't blame fans for not believing it this time.

Davies is a good signing and the timing was needed re:sales. Some point out that we still finished 18th with davies playing in the side, which is a fair point. But i think with the 50/50 scheme like someone mentions higher up, we simply can't afford to be negative/cautious and ALSO NOT GET RESULTS. fans won't be coming and the board won't put up with it. parky will know this obviously, thus we shouls at least not see the one man up front at home again and perhaps even two wide-players playing.......

Perhaps I'm less demanding a supporter than some-though that doesn't mean I don't criticise/grumble as well!! But, I know I wouldn't like to give up going to see City. To me they'e one of the few football 'aspects' that still interest me! I am repelled by the Premier 'Greed Is Good' league, the money is everything approach of many clubs and the 'shallowness' that has taken over the game. Football to me is really 'in a bad place' but...at least City..'occasionally' ..put a smile on my face!!
Fair point, but you are arguing two different issues.
.
Firstly, I agree 100% with you in that I also enjoy going to the match on a Saturday to support my local team. I too can't see myself ever giving up on City and would still rather watch my team than find something else to do.
.
However, your original point was that you wanted the club to put out messages that they need our money and not that we will promise you this and that. Aren't these two completely different issues?
