'A terrific first signing' for Bradford City as Andrew Davies returns

Phil Parkinson is hoping Andrew Davies’ signature will help to persuade more of his summer targets to come on board at Valley Parade Phil Parkinson is hoping Andrew Davies’ signature will help to persuade more of his summer targets to come on board at Valley Parade

Andrew Davies today kicked off City’s summer shopping with a bang after agreeing a one-year deal.

The former Premier League centre half was thought to be out of the club’s reach following his loan spell last season.

But Phil Parkinson has beaten off higher-division interest, led by Greg Abbott’s Carlisle, to snap up the 27-year-old.

Davies will sign officially on July 1 after his contract runs out at Stoke. But his capture is a huge coup for the Bantams and manager Parkinson.

He said: “Andrew’s a terrific first signing for us. He was one I really wanted to do.

“He has played at the highest level but has shown in his time on loan with us a great commitment. I like his hunger and his real desire to be successful.

He (Phil Parkinson) has told me what he is trying to do here and I’m enthusiastic about some of the other signings he hopes to make

Andrew Davies

“I had a good chat with him and he wants to come on board. He is a leader and has that mentality that we want to instill into this club.

“He sees this as a real challenge and wants to progress with us.”

Davies was a huge favourite with supporters during his loan. He made 30 appearances, scoring twice, although his season was blighted by three red cards.

He missed 12 games through suspension – five after the infamous post-match brawl with Crawley – before returning to the back four to shut out champions Swindon at Valley Parade on the final day.

Davies has had to take a significant pay cut from the £15,000 a week he was believed to be earning at the Britannia.

But he admitted his mind was made up by Parkinson and his ambitious plans.

“I’ve been really impressed by the manager,” he said. “He’s told me what he is trying to do here and I’m enthusiastic about some of the other signings he hopes to make.

“This is a massive club with fantastic supporters and I believe we’ve got a really good chance of going up next year.”

With only a week to the season-ticket deadline, City are confident the Davies announcement will spark a rush of sales.

He could also prove a persuasive factor in getting other Parkinson targets to follow suit.

Parkinson added: “Signing Andrew shows the quality of players we are looking to bring in.”

Great, and now what I'm looking forward to even more is all the regular idiots, sorry I mean posters of T&A comments, moaning about this one!

I'm sure they will find a way.

"it's rubbish I wanted John terry"
"pp is an idiot for leaving it so late"
"it's mark lawns fault, we should've got him for 5 years"

Or idiotic comments along those lines...

Wow! What news to wake up to. Despite quite a lot of (perhaps understandable) negativity about musings coming out of VP in the last couple of days, PP, the chairmen and David Baldwin have not disappointed. Hopefully this will start to be the difference between those supporters still debating about getting a season ticket.

I think it's a good bet that next season's captain has arrived!

Always thought he would sign permanently. Great signing! Hope more will come now. Getting two season tickets over the weekend.

Come on people be positive. PP knows what he is doing! If he has the ability to persuade someone like Davies to reject signing for teams in a higher league, we can all hope we are going to acquire similar standard of players.

Next season will be the season we challenge for promotion, so long as we continue to get in players who have ability and the correct mentality (Davies, Reid, Ravenhill). Oliver, Ramsden and Syers may all now be convinced to sign up, as this signing sends out signals we want to achieve promotion.

More repeats than bbc on here. Congratulations to all concerned especially PP, never thought he'd pull this one off. Hope the fans can show a little more faith and trust in PP, he isn't my prefered cuppa at times but maybe just maybe he will prove us all wrong with his targets and sign some real quality. Lets give him and the team a chance what have you got to lose. A few extra hours decorating or shopping with the missus which if owt like mine will cost a lot more. Come on boys lets stick together.

I really do not know how chairman lawn and co have pulled this deal off?.
It will do the club no harm in trying to persuade other transfer targets to come and join bradford cty.
Massive well done to all involved at bradford city in getting this deal over the line.
Were all quick to be negative, so lets have a positive day today. #upthebantams

Does this mean he is our player on the 1st July and there is NO opportunity for Davies or the club to back out?

The announcement is great timing for deadline day fast approaching on season tickets.

A signing like this makes people like me who were thinking of not returning give more weighting to get another ticket. Well done Lawn (who I believe was funding the Donaldson deal last season himelf) and probably is with this.

Probably a large financial gamble and really hjope it pays off for the club.

Some fans are bought over by smallest things. In their eyes we've already won promotion by Christmas on the back of this signing and it totally wipes out the memories of the last two years.

have to say this was something i wasnt expecting, particularly after Lawns comments about the potentail of his signature towards the end of last season.

Agreat signing imo. Well done to the board, parky etc for negiotiating this one.

It may also support those of us who have promoted the need for a smaller (but stronger) squad for many seasons now. The wages saved allow us to compete for better quality. THEN use the loan system as it should be when required to cover suspensions, injuries etc.

Full backs and twow wide players for me would be nice. Anywhere near Davies standard and then we will have a decent squad already......

Oh dear, I guessed it would you who bite back first.

Not ordering the open top bus for a promotion party next season on the back of signing Davies does not make me an idiot, it makes me a realist.

I realise our team is far from good enough to maintain a promotion push next season in it's current state.

The signing of Davies is the way forward and I hope this is complented with other similar signings to improve a team that has been battling relegation for the last few years.

Now I know this is frustrating for you to hear but we aren't 1 man away from being a promotion chasing side, we have many problems to address, but this is a step in the right direction.

So take the bunting down and reverse the open top bus back into the depo, theres alot of work still to do yet.

Didn't Davies appear in 26 games last seson when we finished 18th in L2 ?

You can add Oliver, Ramsden and Syers (perhaps not to blame for last season but we weren't brilliant when he played regularly) to the list of players who have participated in the downward spiral of the club.
Davies is a decent centre half but his signing doesn't change anything. We need a few more signings of players who didn't contribute to last season's debacle before I'm convinced we will be able to mount a serious challenge

You really don't like it that people have differing opinions to you.

You couldn't wait for the one win in a blue moon last season to mouth off, talk about the playoffs then see us lose the next 5 in a row.

It may suprise you but I'm sick of the position we find ourselves in and hope we pull it together, but you won't hear me saying we've turned the corner after a minor success when the bigger picture still shows many things broken.

It's a welcome surprise for the fans that 'AD' has decide to sign on for the coming season. To be honest it seems strange a 27 year old (at his peak) and with his (better than Lge 2 ) skills should want to commit to playing at this level. Strange/surprising but..very welcome from City's point of view. We can certainly 'build round him' defensively (and hopefully 'LO 'too!!

One cautionary note, Andrew..please carry on your great passionate/proactive 'approach' but..be careful to keep challenges on the 'right side' of the 'laws of the game!' We don't want to see you sitting in the stand on suspension THIS coming season!

Take his 3 red cards out of the equation, 2 absolute stinking decisions included within that, and I don't think his 'fouls committed' or discipline is even questionable.

I have stated since before the end of the season we had a chance of capturing AD but only thought it was a small chance due to financial constraints, the other factors in the player deciding to join us were all favourable. Apart from league position, which he will hopefully be a rock we can build and improve our last couple of season finishes upon.

It's a shame that you still have to be negative about this top signing. He didn't look great at time because he was surrounded by League 2 footballers, you only have to watch how he plays, tackles, positions himself at corners and free kicks to see he should be playing in a league or 2 above. Do you think if we stuck Robin Van Persie in our team he would score 34 goals in a season, no, because the delivery to him would be absolute crap, but he's class, so would prob get 20 or so, but the TEAM effort would mean as a TEAM we lose 14 goals, probably match winning goals, and therefore lose points. The point i'm making is Davies hasn't contributed that much to our demise, the TEAM does that all by itself!

So you agree that one man doesn't make a team and like bwwb was saying is that we need to add to this signing before we can start thinking of a promotion run.

In someways this is a good signing. I dont think this guy is the "best defender" in L2..i also dont think "hes a leader of men" which i think was quoted to Radio Leeds earlier today..he got sent off a few times-surely thats the wrong idea of what a leader is? I want to see CITY at the top of the league or in the playoffs. Also if he really is that good, how come no one higher up wanted his services?..Lets wait and see the results next season, that will be the key issue-that the team that is eventually assembled can deliver the results that the supporters of this club deserve. No other club in this league has the support this club has..we need a team that matches the commitment of the supporters

Of course one man doesn't make a team, I agree with that, but I don't agree with not believing this is a great coup for the team and the club, which is also what bwwb said. "Didn't davies appear in 26 games last season when we finished 18th in L2?"
Yes he did, so should we not have signed him?? Should we also have released Jon McLaughlin, Luke Oliver, David Syers, Simon Ramsden, Nakhi Wells and Jimmy Hanson because they played in a team that finished 18th in L2 as well?. but yes TVOR, we do need some more signings, we are from a finished article, but we should at least be able to smile that AD came to us, and not a team in a higher division, do you not agree?

You really don't like it that people have differing opinions to you. Good signing and i do hope he has signed a pre contract agreement. However good he is thought to be the team wasn't weakened when Branston came back in at the season end - indeed it could be said he (Branston) was the main reason we were not even closer to the drop.
Mark Lawn stated many times last year he wanted Davies as team captain for next season and he (ML) has made it happen, so he at least deserves credit for that.

It has been evident for the last few seasons that we lack any real midfield presence and this is where we should be looking for quality replacements.
And, before you question my commitment to the club, I always buy my season ticket in the week they are first advertised. I don't really care which division we are in but I do expect the team to compete against the rest of the division by at least challenging for promotion. We have consistently failed to do this since 1998/9.
We have been in this division long enough to know what is required to get out of it and hopefully we will do it with young players on long term contracts some of whom we will be able to cash in on if a bigger club comes calling

I don't think the signing of a Premier League footballer is an over reaction, but we are all entitled to our opinion. In regards to Branston, granted, he didn't let the team down when he covered for the absence of Mike Tyson and Ricky Hatton, but when he was captain, in the first few games of the season, he wasn't great, he looked slow and sluggish and was having a lot of trouble keeping hold of his man, i.e. no pace.

I agree with you about midfield, i've said all along that Reid isn't good enough, he has great pace and a few good tricks, but his delivery and decision making leave a lot to be desired, I don't think Jones does enough, and Ravenhill can be a bit reckless, but of the few we have, I probably enjoy watching him the most, but we need more in that area.

I would never question your commitment, for 1, I don't know you, you could have 10 kids and buy a season ticket for all 10, and that would make you a better supporter than all of us on here. I buy a season ticket too quite early regardless of which league we are in, but I won't judge anyone, it's not for me to judge. Personally, I think PP does know what is required to get out of this division, and we will all be pleasantly suprised come May 2013.

Oh I like it.(nice one PCBA) This morning there was nothing but possitive responces to the signing and as the day went on they started to get more negative and then everyone started slagging eachother off. The player that every single person who comes on here, wanted to see Davis sign and he HAS done just that. Let's be more possitive and look forward to more quality surprise signings. No doubting this is an excellent signing.

A brave, and to be commended, move considering the dire season ticket sales.

PP now has no alternative but to play high tempo, positive football because we're going to have to depend on the 50/50 scheme holders coming back every other week to make up the shortfall in income.

The Board have financially backed the manager since he's been here. Another three quality signings and we have the makings of a promotion seeking squad....but I remain to be convinced that the manager has the ability to translate "quality of squad" to "success on the pitch".

waynus, anyone who is moaning and bleating about anything on this thread is an idiot. Fair enough, have a go when we, the club, board get it wrong but what have they got wrong here to bring so many knockers out. Yet again.

At some point these true, realistic fans will realise that perpetually beating and berating the club is damaging. And doesn't help us in anyway at all. I myself had a go the other day due to Rovrum signing four already, I do understand though that not all our targets may even be in the country at this moment in time and cannot commit to any deal, also anyone we do sign early will need paying and that will be another reason we are just lining em up, also some may be under contract for another month similar to AD.

We either support and congratulate when we do well, this is one of those times. Or we don't. We don't look for extra pitfalls and problems. That really is just negative.

I'm not arguing that the consistent negativity gets us all down. This was fantastic news to wake up to and if anyone disagrees, they are simply negative for the sake of it.
.
However, when you had a moan the other day about Rovrum making their signings whilst we appeared to be dragging our feet, I wouldn't expect anyone to call you an idiot. Likewise, just because someone tries to dampen some spirits (and let's face it, those talking about promotion are simply having a laugh), they shoudn't be called idiots either.
.
Remember this, as it stands, we have 2 keepers, 1 centre-back, no full-backs, 1 winger, 2 central midfielders and 4 strikers (inc Baker). Yes, we have made offers to Oliver, Ramsden & Syers, but as yet, they haven't signed. This is NO WAY near a team, let alone a squad. Davies is a terrific signing, but he is the first stone in the wall, not the final piece and that is all some were meaning. Admittedly, a bit of positivity too wouldn't have gone amiss.

Davies is a decent centre half but his signing doesn't change anything. We need a few more signings of players who didn't contribute to last season's debacle before I'm convinced we will be able to mount a serious challenge
I wasn't being negative I just don't understand the over-reaction to the re-signing of a player when we already have a centre half in Branston who never let the team down.
Branston did let the team down by constantly misjudging tackles in the 1st quarter of the season, that kept costing us at least 1 goal in every game he played. Even in the Bolton friendly he cost us 2 goals. Granted when he came back he looked better, but overall I'd rather have Oliver & Davies, with a back up like Williams than him.

Misjudge + slow pace = goal conceded.

PS. Davies has no disciplinary problems...his res cards were ridiculous. It's Ravo who needs to calm down (a little bit, but not too much. Love his hard tackles)

Also Reid & Jones are good enough, but they do need to work on certain areas if their game. Reid with his early crossing (does it too much imo) & Jones with getting in the box more and shooting (something he's already said he's working on)

Imo the only 1st team areas we need to get are; 2 full backs,1 winger & 1 striker. Plus 11 Subs for each position.

Middlesbrough, Barnsley & Carlisle to name 3...were all trying to sign Davies.

Best defender in the league imo, and with the interest he got from the Championship & League 1 clubs above, proves that he must be good.

I did qualify my rovrum comments on that thread and this with an understanding of the reasons why we were not making the signings or interest announcements. It would have had to be an idiot to have had a go. Besides, I didn't mention idiots first on this thread. I said c*cks and only said that in a humourous rib poke manner by likening it to 'bantams'.

Anyway, Andy Gray anyone?

shame on you for suggesting that idiots post on here!

Andy Gray would be a fine addition to the squad.

Just on Rovrum, I hope City play Evans' new circus team at their "wonderful arena" for the first match of next season.

I miss 606 debate.

I'm not sure if we do communicate via twitter mate. I'm always having unhinged 'twirps' following me, LOL.
.
In relation to the above posts, I wasn't meaning you were the one that started the 'idiot' calling and I was amused when I read your 'c0cks' reference. I was responding to you because you said that anyonw that moans or bleats is an idiot. My point is (was), we ALL moan/bleat at some point and I would argue that not all are idiots.
.
Besides, even if there are some idiots, calling them as such, does nothing but make the poster look foolish.
.
What is your Twitter name? Take it you found mine from following my brother, as he said you were following each other (not in a gay way), LOL
