Rhodes expects ‘decent budget’ to net Bantams decent season

The signing of Kyel Reid was a big turning point in the season for City, says Julian Rhodes The signing of Kyel Reid was a big turning point in the season for City, says Julian Rhodes

City will have “no excuses” for not mounting a proper challenge in their sixth season in football’s basement.

Julian Rhodes hopes the playing budget could be among the top eight in League Two – and is confident that Phil Parkinson can deliver.

Having taken the helm so early last term, Parkinson has had a good chance to assess the areas that need to be improved. Another striker, a right winger and central defence are positions likely to be looked at over the summer.

Joint-chairman Rhodes said: “Phil’s advantage is that he’s had time to get to know what the club are all about. He’s in a strong position because he knows what he needs in the squad.

“Look at his managerial record previously and he’s normally done pretty well when he’s had a pre-season.

“We aren’t expecting a slow start to next season. We want them to come out firing on all four cylinders.”

One place where we’re lucky is having the likes of Hanson and Wells under contract. I think they could be the best strike partnership in the division

Front duo Nahki Wells and James Hanson will be key to City’s form next season as well as winger Kyel Reid, who was Parkinson’s first capture on the day he took over.

Rhodes added: “There will be no excuses. The budget will be decent, though it won’t be as much as this last season.

“We can’t afford that but I’d be very surprised if it was not top seven or eight.

“One place where we’re lucky is having the likes of Hanson and Wells under contract. I think they could be the best strike partnership in the division next season.

“How much are those two worth in the market? But we don’t have to pay any transfer fees for them.

“We’ve also got Reid tied up for next season and he’s probably as good a winger as any at this level. So it’s a good start.” Parkinson has already assured supporters that the club’s prize assets will not be going anywhere.

Given City’s league status, that may not be a cast-iron certainty but Rhodes is optimistic they will be leading the line again in August.

“You can never say never in football but the plan is that they are all here for next season.

“Look at any game when we’ve had Hanson, Wells and Reid in the team and I think you’ll find we’ve done very well. Signing Reid was the turning point after our terrible start. He gave us the ability to put the opposition on the back foot.

“He can be frustrating but most of the time he does things. He ended up with 12 assists and four goals so he does produce.

“I’d personally love to see him on one side and Omar Daley on the other but the manager may not think the same.”

Parkinson will kick off next term with a smaller squad of 20 to 22. A cull of the fringe players has already begun with others, who are not likely to feature in his thoughts, told to look for new clubs even though they are still tied to City for next year.

Lower down the scale, striker Adam Baker was the only trainee to be taken on and the development squad has been shelved.

Rhodes said: “Phil wants to do the Bury model as I call it with 20 first-team players and two for most positions.

“In recent years, we’ve had to go into the loan market if the main one gets injured because the second player isn’t good enough. Unfortunately the loans haven’t particularly been any better.

“One thing I don’t want to end up doing is keep paying people to leave.

“We’ve had to do that with development squad and young players and we’re going to have to do the same with some of the first team that we signed last summer.

“I’m not going into names but some clearly weren’t good enough. It’s not their fault but most people should have been able to see that in the first few games.

“There will be a different ethos with no development squad or anything like that. All the money for the budget will genuinely be (spent) on the first team.”

Another hidden signal to fans that it's down to ST support for the quality signings we may need for the challenge ahead.Unfortunate for supporters when those charged with the custodianship of their Club are unable to financially progress the state of things. But,if PP is a shrewd operator,we may just hopefully pick up a few gems..God knows,it's about time for City to shine!

Feel for Rhodes he has citys best interest at heart. If wells, Hanson and Reid have been so effective why did u allow dagnal to come in another unsuccessful loan to put wells on the bench. Your biggest downfall is the managers who have let u down. My concern is that pp will sign players again he will underperform and be sacked, he has already lost fans, and a new guy will come in and we will have to pay players off again and the circle continues. I support the directors but maybe they need someone with a football brain to challenge these managers decisions. Not only tactics but signings as wel. For me pp made a good signin with Reid but we had 40 players last season a lot signed by pp and I have no confidence that he will sign the right players for the club or get the tactics right and this will see us back in this position next pre season. I am also lost that having a settled squad of 20 players has just been thought up, again basics that shud be in place. We need a footballing leader. Maybe a director of football, I do not like these roles but Rhodes has proved why these positions are needed.

Omar Daley on the right and Reid on the left! One can but dream! Noticed that John Oster got released by Donny yesterday, would be a good addition to the City squad. Saw him play up at Sunderland a few times (granted this was a few years back) and he has got some skill, which you never really lose, would be amazing in our league. I know we dont want to constantly be looking at older players, but we have managed to get some, towards the end of their careers, who have really boosted the dressing room and the squad as a whole. Also Matt Oakley was released, 34 now, but a really solid midfielder. Just depends on wages at the end of the day, the free transfer market will, as ever, be overflowing with talented players who will be moving on for one reason or another and we should be a good option for them. Big crowds, great support, great stadium and the possibility of a celebratory season if we can finally be looking at promotion!

100% behind Parky, think we ended the season really well and once his stamp is made on this squad, we should def be challenging at the right end of the table.

Reid and Daley in the same team. I really do fear for the sanity of some city fans.

Rather Daley than Fagan, we have a full back to do that job. In essence what JR and other's are saying is they would like two more attack minded widemen, Reid does do some good work tracking back and helping out but his best work is done running at people, and this is what fans want to see. So, one either side, with similar attributes would be what we have all been clamouring for. Well, that and promotion.

agreed.

The ticket take up is a result not only of our results but also display on the field.

Realistically with our current financial backing the best we could ever really hope for is to play in the division above the one we are and no further. Thus if we are to languish in the lower reaches i'd rathyer us be having a go each and every week. We've traditionally alwyas played with wingers, even in the premiership we didn't or rarely at least adopt a team without at least beagrie in there, so why in division four football?

Furthernmore if we are spending top 7 money then why aren't we out there taking them on?

Bonkers management for me and whilst many are accused of negativity on here there was NONE more negative than our chairman last season and we are now witnessing the effects......
