Tribute to 'Mr Wibsey Rugby Club' Hartley
11:20am Friday 18th May 2012 in Sport
Wibsey rugby union club stalwart Derek Hartley has died aged 79.
A former first-team captain, the hooker fulfilled many committee roles off the field once he had hung up his boots, including fixture secretary and team secretary and was also involved in buying their current clubhouse in Wibsey High Street in the early 1970s.
His sons Dave, who also went on to be first-team captain, and Bob also played for Wibsey, as do Derek’s grandsons Matt and Dan.
Former Wibsey player and coach Ian Gregson said: “Derek was ‘Mr Wibsey Rugby Club’, and always had a smile on his face.
“He would support the club in any way that he could, and enjoyed both playing and the craic.”
Derek’s funeral is on Tuesday at St Michael’s Church, Shelf (1.45pm), followed by committal at Scholemoor Crematorium.
Donations may be made to Marie Cure, Macmillan Cancer Care and Hospice at Home.
