Heath L'Estrange determined Bradford Bulls will not be left Red-faced again

Heath L’Estrange admits the Bulls owe Salford City Reds one as they seek to avenge last season’s mauling at the Willows and their home humiliation eight weeks ago.

Mick Potter’s men were thumped 56-16 at Salford last April and were on the receiving end again when the Reds triumphed 38-18 at Odsal on March 25.

Nevertheless, the Bulls have shaped up as genuine play-off contenders this term and lie three points clear of ninth-placed Hull KR ahead of their maiden trip to the new Salford City Stadium tomorrow.

Joint skipper L’Estrange is eyeing a fifth away win of the season and revenge against Phil Veivers’ men.

“We were on a high going into the home game against Salford earlier in the season,” said the Bulls hooker.

“We had won at Hull KR and then beat St Helens prior to that game, and are probably on a high again this time.

“Perhaps, like last year at the Willows, we underestimated Salford and got punished.

“We owe them one but we just need to keep our heads and play our own game.

“They’ve got some quality Aussies in their side and a great bunch of local lads too. They deserve our respect but this is about what we do.

“It’s a good opportunity for us to keep our away record going and keep that distance between ourselves and Hull KR.”

L’Estrange has taken encouragement from the way in which his side recovered from 16-0 down to put London Broncos to the sword in their last outing.

“It’s not the first time we’ve done it this year and it shows the unity and spirit within the side,” he added.

“But we should be at our strongest in the first ten or 15 minutes and we’ve worked hard on things since the London game.

“We need to start strongly against Salford tomorrow night.”

Brett Kearney (ankle) and Adrian Purtell (hamstring) remain sidelined by injury and John Bateman is still banned.

However, Bateman will be available to face arch-rivals Leeds after it was revealed that tomorrow’s trip to Salford will be the final game of his three-match suspension.

The previous two games were the Super League trip to London and the Academy game against Warrington last weekend.

Glad Bateman will be back, but since when have Academy games counted in match suspensions?

The rules have always been there and Cas have not exploited the. Chase will miss three super league games. Bateman is qualified by age for Academy football and as the club had no first team game last week he can count that. The qualified by age is bit is paramount.

The rules ahvent always been there. The RFL decided this year along with the early guilty plea that any player who has a ban of 2 games or more can include an academy game but they can only use this once a season.

you can only use an academy game towards suspension if their isnt another qualifying game that you could have played in that week. Only one game a week can count towards a ban (with exception of easter weekend when both easter games count). In both Bateman and Chase's cases it's due to their being a cup round which their teams were already knocked out off during the period they were serving their bans.

Salford is certainly a "banana skin" game and, if taken too lightly, could cause a slip. It is a should win game and a must win if the side are to provide a buffer for a possible points deduction. I think the possible inclusion of Purtell and Kearney will have a far greater influence than the availability of Bateman who needs nurturing and weening before being handed a permanent place (much like how Sam Tomkins was handled at Wigan). However, it is no longer a "which Bulls side turns out?" situation and their consistency will hopefully see them beat Salford by a lot more than the 4 points given on the spread. A good win to take us in to what may be a critical period in the club's history next week.

Before you start mouthing off at me get YOUR facts right. Chase was banned for an incident in the 4th Round of the cup on13th April. Since then Cas have played Warrington, Widnes and this weekend Hull KR. That's three first team games. He is not playing against Hull KR. It's not been on any official website because the rule quite clearly states you have to be qualified by age unless you were playing as an overage player in the Under 20's 'when the offence occurred'.
