Bradford City’s core strength gives Phil Parkinson platform to build on

Phil Parkinson admits he and joint-chairmen Julian Rhodes and Mark Lawn have a busy summer ahead of them
Phil Parkinson believes a profitable recruitment drive can make City a force to be reckoned with next season.
The Bantams boss will preside over a major overhaul during the summer as he looks to transform his side from strugglers into serious contenders.
After a disappointing campaign which saw City finish 18th in League Two, Parkinson has shown the door to a handful of players and told several others they can go. He wants to build his own squad and admitted his interest in former Manchester City and Portsmouth winger Kelvin Etuhu earlier this week.
Parkinson said: “We’ve got a decent core of players – I’ve just got to improve that now.
“That obviously means retaining the players we want to retain and improving the squad in other areas.
“The chairmen and I have got a lot of work to do in the summer to build this squad up because we don’t want to find ourselves in the position we were last year.
“The only way of avoiding that is by building a good squad and a good team obviously. That’s what we aim to do.”
At times last season, City underlined their potential with notable victories against Torquay (twice), Southend (twice), Shrewsbury and Crewe.
“But the league table shows that we’re a long way adrift of where we need to be to make this team successful,” added Parkinson.
“There’s got to be an improvement – we cannot stand still.
“There has to be an improvement in all aspects of the club, with player recruitment obviously being the biggest one.”

You're not suggesting PP plays the dregs that he's left with simply because they're from our own youth system are you?

JIM Bentley has made former Bradford left back Robbie Threlfall his first summer signing.
The former Liverpool youngster, 23, who was at Bradford City last year before ending the season at Dundee, has signed a two-year deal at the Globe Arena.
He is a player Bentley has admired for some time and almost joined the Shrimps on loan at the start of the year as cover for Laurence Wilson after he picked up the injury that saw him miss the end of the campaign and has now been signed to replace Wilson who has left Morecambe in search of football at a higher level.
Bentley said: “Robbie is a great lad with a good attitude and I am delighted to have him here,
“We wanted a left back who is a good defender but can also get forward and I think he will fit that bit really well and fit into the side well.”
Threlfall, a former England Under 19 international, said he chose the Shrimps ahead of other clubs and was looking forward to the season ahead.
He said: “I know a couple of Morecambe players and as soon as they started talking about the place I knew it would be a great place to come to.
“It looks a great set up and I wish the season was starting tomorrow.”
As well as playing for Bradford, Threlfall has had loan spells at Hereford, Stockport and Northampton.

Whether I'm being negative or not I suggest Parky needs to make an improvement in his management as well as his own player recruitment, cos he's not going to be able to hide behind Jacko's shortcomings as a manager anymore.
Roll on next season and no more excuses... from the board or Parky.

Village Bantam wrote:Hear hear! The most recent players to get a run in the first team that graduated from the youth system were O'Brien and Colbeck. Both were not good enough so why are all the others going to be up to standard? People need to stop romanticising about our youth setup because we simply don't attract good enough youth or keep the decent ones. Our youth team won only 5 games in the league all season! Our good youth go to bigger clubs (can't blame them or the club when offered 6 figure sums with add-ons.) and like you say we get left with the rest who are simply garbage. I'm cautiously optimistic about this purge of our mediocre/rubbish players, it's about time the management shook the squad up because this is our 6th year in the bottom division.

Jacko "stepped down", PP comes in with experienced pros, Archie Christie leaves and the dev. squad is scrapped at the end of the season.
When will people give up on this dream of young talented team? We simply don't have the resources for this luxury or are not in a position to do so.

Look at Huddersfield's Academy, which has been a Premiership Academy for the last few years. It was set up when Barry Rubery owned the club, survived when the club went into administration and for the last few season has flourished. The teams, I believe start at the under 9's level and go right up to under 18's. There are around seven or eight players who are on the fringes of the first team that have come through the system, the most notable are Jack Hunt and Alex Smithies who are first team regulars, and players such as James Spencer who spent last season on loan at Cheltenham and Liam Ridehalgh who spent the first half of the season at Swindon and the second half at Chesterfield. All these lads have gained vast league experience this last season which can only benefit the club in future. We should look at their system and use it as a model for our own system, not for now or next season, but for 2015/16 onwards. The essence of a good academy is to get good players who can be made into much better players by good coaching. Huddersfield's is now managed by Mark Lillis, and Steve Smith has recently gone back there to run the academy in conjunction with the other coaches.

I thought this was going to be addressed with the Development Squad and we would be building for the future. Now we seem to back where we were at this time last year, it's BCFC 'Groundhog Day'!

Dev squad has gone.
Crewe are a selling club, always have been since Dario has been involved as it is he who was the visionary there and insisted that Crewe invest in the youth sides, which would then save/make Crewe money further down the line. The better players, Savage, Thomas,Platt even Ashley Westwood were sold, the next level of ability were held onto and developed further so much so that they played first team football for Crewe and cost nothing in transfer fees and would have been on an incremental wage rise season on season as they proved their worth as pros.
If we cannot follow that model, and it is now apparent we can't or won't then all that remains is to continue to pick up other people's cast offs, like Wells or delve into the non-league and find the Hansons and Hannahs and hope that they gel and become reliable pros who may or may not become saleable assets.

There were some decent kids in that squad. Yes they were yound and yes they still had/have a lot to learn, but isn't that why they were signed for the development squad and not the first team?

Just when we thought short-termism had run it's course, we are back to square 1 of picking up rejects from other League 2 sides and a possible recruit from RIAS
