Wharfedale’s Dan Solomi and Tom Barrett, plus Otley’s Chris Georgiou, scored tries for Yorkshire but it was their red rose rivals who went one step away from a return to Twickenham after an eight-try demolition at Scarborough.

An excellent attendance at Scalby were treated to a 13-try extravaganza, with Fylde’s England Counties wingman Ollie Brennand the chief beneficiary with a four-try haul.

Both sides collected three converted tries before the interval for a 21-21 half-time scoreline, Wharfedale fly half Barrett, Sheffield Tigers centre Jamie Broadley and replacement wingman Adam Ryder (Huddersfield) crossing for Yorkshire and Barrett adding three conversions.

His opposite number Chris Johnson (Huddersfield), flanker Evan Stewart (Fylde) and Brennand maintained parity, Johnson adding the goals, but then Lancashire took control after the restart, with Brennand completing a second-half hat trick, Stewart grabbing his second and Fylde prop Peter Altham completing Lancashire’s try haul.

Johnson tagged on four more conversions, while Yorkshire’s riposte was too little, too late with tries from Solomi and replacement Georgiou, plus a conversion from Barrett. “This was the best Lancashire performance in a Roses match since I’ve been involved,” said coach Mark Nelson.

Defending champions Lancashire will contest the Northern Pool decider of the cup against Cheshire next Saturday at Broughton Park, with the winners going through to the final at Twickenham on Sunday, May 27.

Cheshire scored six tries as they beat Northumberland 43-17 at Chester.
