Show me the money! Bradford City boss Phil Parkinson poised to find out player budget
7:30am Tuesday 8th May 2012 in Sport
By Simon Parker, Bradford City Reporter
The size of Phil Parkinson’s budget for next season will depend largely on how many season tickets are sold over the summer
Phil Parkinson should find out tomorrow how much cash he will have to shop with this summer.
Parkinson has talks planned with City’s co-chairmen Julian Rhodes and Mark Lawn when he expects to be told the size of his prospective budget.
The Bantams boss is desperate to get going with moulding the squad exactly how he wants for next season.
But his plans for transfer targets as well as the current players coming out of contract will be governed by the money available.
Parkinson said: “It’s slightly more complicated because the budget is dependent on season-ticket sales and revenue coming in.
“The chairmen are saying they’ve got to get a handle on that before we can finalise the figure.
If I was still playing, I’d want to join this club
Phil Parkinson
“Fagan, Flynn and Mitchell went to save on money. Now I’ve got to see exactly where we are with the finances.
“We’ve got to get a feel of the market as well.
“That’s really important because we don’t want to pay over the odds or offer players too little and lose out.
“But I’m speaking to agents all the time and make sure we pitch in at the right level which is fair for our existing players and the ones we want to attract.”
Parkinson, who plans to arrange a week in Ireland as part of pre-season, is confident of being able to sell the club to prospective new arrivals.
He insists the size of City still holds sway in football circles despite spending the last five seasons stuck in the bottom division.
He added: “People should want to come and play for Bradford.
“If I was still playing, I’d want to join this club.
“If a League One club came in for me as well and it was a lower mid-range one, then I’d go for Bradford.
“Like myself when I first came here, you can see the potential. It’s my job to sell that to people over the summer.
“But I also know that the stadium won’t get us promoted. The name Bradford City won’t get us to the top of the league - only the team can do that.”
The £199 season-ticket offer runs until the end of the month. Sales have been slow because of the uncertainty over City’s league position and the club will hope to see an acceleration heading up to the deadline.

We need two wing backs that can push on and support the attack, not be anchored to the half way line. The team needs to have goal options in midfield with players like Syers.
Hanson did really well and finished with a good goal tally all considering with little or no service from the wings. Wells, most of his goals came from free play.
How the team play is down to the manager, if they don’t do as told they will more than likely be dropped.
It’s been a long hard frustrating disappointing negative season.

But I agree that being negative will get the club nowhere so give him another start to the season and lets hope by Christmas we look like a strong team thats capable of promotion.

A lot of our starting places are already filled as far as I'm concerned (if he manages to keep them)
Johnny Mac
Oliver, Seip
Reid, Jones, Syers
Hanson, Wells
If he can add good players in defence, get a good right winger and some decent squad players then I will start the season positive

If, as the story states, the budget is dependent on season ticket sales then we can all expect a call sometime soon. I haven't played for 12 years and I would probably need some new boots but I might just about fall into the wage structure.
Seriously though - if it's a straightforward as that then we're in a terminal spin. People aren't buying season tickets because they see the prospect of another poor season. If they don't buy season tickets and the club can't attract any quality players then standard is only going to drop further, and so the cycle continues.
Somewhere along the line the cycle needs to be broken. Stories like Syers being likely to leave, etc are not the way to go about it, we need some positives, something to get excited about.

We could never build a Fortress Valley Parade out of suche low grade supporters as S from R and his tribe. Some times we chant "Bradford Army" can you imagine how long an army would last with soldiers of his calibre. S from R would only be happy in a clean uniform and would only be happy in the victory parade. on the battle field he would not last two minutes, why because the quality soldiers around him would have spotted him for the week link that he is and sorted him out. He may go to every game home and away and maybe he has done since before the Bantoms wandered the fields of Manningham. S from R, slap yourself, wake up, your not happy, you've never been happy, sorry to break it to you but you'll never be happy following our club. S from R just because you'll never be happy doesn't mean you have to bring your depression to oure club. Even if you got your way and we got another manager, you would not support him openly until he actually got us out of the division. You don't say which manager you would prefer and what's more to the point you do not say how we are going to attract a new manager without anybody buying season tickets. Your so called support is wind and water we need quality support bricks and morter, some thing the club can build with. Try just for one season perhaps, to support the Claret and Amber unreservadly, vocally and financially. Who knows you might enjoy it, possibly be happier for it, by god it would give a lot of people a well earned break and you might for once in your supporting life have contributed something positive for the club, other than just your presence.

Anyway, that was then this is now Audal and the player budget is governed by ST sales. This is how the club now runs, we do rely heavily on pre-season season tickets, the added gate money I believe is released bit by bit on as 'as needed' basis for loanees etc but without a big run on tickets this week it could be me and thee turning out for the first few games next season old pal.

Sorry, but missed out on that little team from down south. over 21,000 turned up to watch tooting in a f. a. cup match mid seventies(I think) my point being is do not rely on s/t sales just play good football and folk will turn up on the day.
Nothing has changed as far as City supporters are concerned, the week before the Tooting and Mitcham 4th round FA Cup tie (attendance 21,152) a crowd of 3059 watched a 3-0 victory over Rochdale.

People like Shaun from Richmond are people who know nothing about football. It takes time to know your players when you start a quarter a way through the season. Give Parkinson another season as he will know who his best starting 11 will be.
What baffles me is how Parkinson expects to learn the size of his budget, as the deadline for cheap season tickets has three weeks to run, having only sold a couple of thousand or so to date?

I think people need to PP a break, yes this season has left a pretty sour taste in everyones mouth but we need to forget about it and focus on next season now and start as we mean to go on. I dont understand the negativity when it comes to buying a season ticket, cheapest in the entire football league, to support the team supporters supposedly 'love'. I've had a season ticket 17 years and ive already got mine for the next campaign. Lets get behind them and show some positivity for once! CTID

I would like to think that sales are about to miraculously take off, but the reality is that the Bradford public are tired of all the broken promises, the hype, the expectation, and the subsequent dross.
Sorry if this sounds negative, but I've been around Bradford long enough, and the signs are not good this time. I think the begging bowl will be out before too long.

.
However, although the season has been disappointing, I did see some positives in PP. Don't get me wrong, I still believe he sets us up too defensively, but he at least changes things when needed to. Under Taylor and even McCall, I felt they both tended to change players like for like.
.
Some of PP's signings are also bewildering, such as Reed, Taylor and Haworth. In relation to Fagan and Atkinson, they both had good pedigree, so I can understand why he signed them. The point is, he realised where we needed to improve and targetted that position; whether he got it right is open to another debate.
.
My only concern and this is a biggie, is that there will be no money to keep our best players let alone signing quality to improve the existing squad. When I asked at the weekend, we had just passed 2000 tickets. This isn't anywhere near enough.
.
Will Lawn (the man everyone loves to hate), stick his hand in his pocket again to give PP a decent budget? Well, we will find out soon. Here's to a summer of positivity, instead of the worry we had last year.....!

ALEXIMO.56. wrote:People bite at Shauns comments because he, and idiots like him, are driving people away from the club with their constant sniping and negativity. Their attitude is a cancer at the club. He was campaigning for Stuart to be sacked in Oct 2007, straight on Taylor's back (although Turnip did prove to be a disaster) and immediately wanted PP out at the first negative result. He'd probably have turned on his boyfriend Jacko if he'd had a few more games. The club will never get out of the crap we are in without any kind of stability. Some occasional positivity would probably help too.
Why does everyone bite at Shauns comments? He just comes on and likes to wind all of us up and he is succeding. Just ignore his comments and let him behave like a prattovic. He is just one big wind up merchant and he knows it and he is lovvin it. I just have a right good laugh at him now. Now, let's see what sort of player budget PP is gonna get. I will be buying my S/tkt this week and I still believe that Parky will take us up next season. Let's hope the rumours are true about this R/winger from reading and of course Etuhu and Bogdanovic. I understand Andy OB. has been released by the Lilly $hites and Davis has also been released on a free. The question is will he come down in wages and sign for us? How mutch are city prepared to offer him?

Whilst we do have the basis for a very good first team I too am worried re the ST sales and at 2k we don't have enough for half a team never mind a squad. There has been two paydays since the prices were announced, yet we have just over a fifth of last seasons sales up to present. One more payday left. There is also the spread payment scheme, which if thought about at 26 quid per month is only 6 quid more than one match per month. If you're undecided people bear that in mind. 20 quid per match or 9x26 for the full season at home? No brainer to me if you're a bit skint or just considering.
YOUR CLUB NEEDS YOU!!!

1) I think we've generally been too negative on our travels, but at home we've scored 34 goals; a total that has only been beaten twice in the last 10 seasons. We've also only lost 6 games, 2 of those under Jacko, and in that same period, only in 1 season have we lost fewer.
) Season ticket sales will obviously affect the budget and determine the quality of players we can bring in.
3) If there isn't a sufficient take up, then there will not be any cheap season ticket offers in the future.

A significant number of people have bought season tickets but don't bother to turn up for games.
The club budget is therefore built on bringing in large numbers of overpaid loan players who have proved totally incapable of building a team ethic required to get promoted.
Even if they were successful the directors know that any increase in price of tickets would mean a fall off in ticket sales. Therefore the budget in L1 would be no larger than in L2 (and possibly less).
The model of low prices and high sales (of season tickets) actually makes relegation (and lower wages) a more attractive business model.
An example of this is the way the 25 year ticket works - Conference No Discount, L2 25% Discount, L1 50% Discount Championship 75% Discount and Premiership 100% Discount.
The whole cheap ticket deal has held this club back for years and the sooner it is scrapped the better.
Sales would definitely fall in year 1 (and probably income) but at least success would guarantee extra income and failure would not be an option

This team in the 4th division without the scheme would attract approx 5-7k if that. Historic figures show this to be the true level at true prices. The deal has attracted fairweathers and swelled our support base, it also wasn't planned to be long term as we expected to be promoted before now, so it has had to stay and I feel that unless new owners come in and make wholesale changes to the way the club is run then it won't be changing anytime soon.
Promotion is won on the pitch, goals are scored on the pitch, if we do it on the pitch we won't be held back by any working or non-working ticket deal, if we don't then we will remain and retain our legacy status as a perennial 4th division club.
