Penny dropped for James Hanson after Phil Parkinson lost out on top Bradford City target Paul Benson

James Hanson is City’s top scorer this season with 14 goals James Hanson is City’s top scorer this season with 14 goals

James Hanson has filled the void left by the striker that got away.

Paul Benson returns to Valley Parade as a Swindon player tomorrow for the first time since his planned City move in November broke down on medical concerns.

Phil Parkinson was bitterly upset to see his top transfer target slip away – and Benson has gone on to fire 12 goals for Paolo Di Canio’s League Two champions.

But the Bantams boss reckons Hanson has eased his disappointment by stepping up to the plate.

Parkinson said: “Paul’s a good player and that’s why we tried so hard to get him. We thought he could play with James as well as instead of him.

“But equally James – and Nahki Wells – have really done well since then.

James (Hanson) knows he has got to be the focal point and look to inspire other people on the pitch

Phil Parkinson

“I do think the penny’s starting to drop now with James and what’s expected of him.

“He’s our number nine, not a young kid we’ve just plucked from non-league. He’s been here a few years.

“He knows he has got to be the focal point and look to inspire other people on the pitch. He has to be a leader in the way he runs and competes and I think he’s done that more and more as the season wore on.”

Hanson is City’s top scorer on 14 goals, two ahead of Wells, and their strike partnership has developed promisingly over the second half of the campaign.

Parkinson can see a growing maturity in the target man and said: “When you come from non-league, sometimes you can bring some traits with you that are hard to shake off.

“For me, James is definitely coming of age as a player and I’m expecting him to finish the season well tomorrow and keep improving. There is always room to improve but he’s got the raw requirements to be a good striker.”

Andrew Davies and Jon McLaughlin could feature on the final day – their first involvement since the infamous Crawley brawl. For Davies, it will be the last game of his loan from Stoke.

David Syers, whose City future remains undecided, may also return if Ritchie Jones fails to recover from the whack on the back he suffered at Cheltenham.

Parkinson said: “We are contemplating changes for several reasons. With Jonny Mac and Davo, it’s a bit unfair that the Crawley game would be their last (of the season).

“Of course they made a mistake but they’ve taken their punishment and been great about it.

“Jon went down to the FA hearing with David Baldwin to represent the club and Davo has been great coming in every day for five weeks and training. It’s a long time.”

Davies saw red at the County Ground in October but City still battled to a 0-0 draw. No side has managed to keep Swindon goalless twice.

Parkinson said: “We were excellent down there. Even when we only had ten men, we played really well.

“We know the discipline of our team and the shape when we haven’t got the ball will have to be at its best. Maybe in the second half against Cheltenham last week we became too open.

“Swindon have invested well in the squad and continually improved. But it doesn’t matter what budget you have, you’ve still got to get teams over the finishing line and credit to them for doing that.”

The flamboyant Di Canio has promised to have the Swindon club crest tattooed on his chest to celebrate the title – but Parkinson has no plans for any body art of his own.

He laughed: “I’ve never been into tattoos! But Paolo’s done great. I don’t know him but he’s a character and a big name. He was an exceptional player and so far he’s proved to be a good manager.”

wouldnt say Parkie missed out, Benson didnt pass the medical and was seen as a great risk for the money end off!!
JH its his 3rd season so in my eyes he his still a rookie but doing well when played up top with another ie Wells!!
I think Parkie should have a look back at himself regarding weird team selections and loanees!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Agreed.next season has to be built on a core of 20 full time players and minimal loansi

Yeah Benson has scored 12 goals for top of the table. He would have scored far fewer for us. And as a result of him failing the medical, we've brought Wells on.

Swindon also didn't have to pay the 100k fee we were due to pay hence taking a gamble on Benson's fitness made much more sense.

Agreed, good point well made.

Do we think PP is going to try and keep Dagnall on for next season - i never had the chance to see him in action, obviously he had not played too much before he joined us and has had a few injuries since joining us, but has he looked like with more game time he could be a good player for us, and maybe the experience up front in the squad we could do with???

I see common sense has now prevailed re Benson.

Dagnall would be a good addition but as a forward he would be my third choice behind Wells and Hanson. Or if we had a manager more inclined to attack instead of contain he could be played at the head of a four man midfield with a holding player behind him. This would give us five attack minded and five defence minded outfield players.

Newsletter through stating ticket office open up to 5pm today, called ticket office to check on something re 50/50, rang off after 6 mins with an automated message.

Now I am hoping that this is due to a massive queue at the office and no-one is actaully available because they are dealing with hoardes of purchases. I am thinking however that as per usual there is a lot of slacking going on and someone just cba to pick up the phone.

A possible lost purchase all because of inactivity. Not good Mr Baldwin, not good at all.

Cheers PCBA

He has pedigree, that is why I was surprised he didn't do a little better, but again as I mentioned he hadn't played too much before he joined us this season, and I agree with you that the current negative tactics probably don't suit a player like him.

Perhaps, and it is only a suggestion, but PP should maybe think about playing a system and style that best suits the players in OUR squad rather than chopping and changing the formation, players and style every week to suit each and every side we play against!!!!

He keeps talking about the players needing to show consistency, however if 4th div players are not given any consistency with the formation, tactics and team mates on the pitch then I am sure it is even more difficult for them to produce on a regular basis, this will then start affecting confidence.

Maybe, (and I hope to the big Clarent and Amber god that it does) after securing a few players, and tieing down a few players, with a full pre-season to work with the squad and nearly a seasons experience with us and this division,PP may be able to start the season with a better idea of his best 11 and the best system to get the most out of that team.
Optimistic - yes, but possible!

Paul Benson has been scoring tap-ins which James Hanson would have scored if he was in that position. If we had some one to set James up he would score over 20 in a season. I went and watched City at the county ground as I live in South Wiltshire and Swindon weren't anything special. When Davies was sent off they still didn't look like scoring. It was a close game looking like it could go either way until the sending off.

You cannot compare Hanson and Benson, Hanson has scored 14 and Benson 12.Thats were it stops, too many influencing factors, both strikers and both scoring goals end of.

I have never ever slagged off a manager, coach nor player in public during my time as a paid sportsman. these idiotic twits(great word)online means the lads of today do not have the brains to get money for a quote via the local rag .BUT ! if a daft lad wants to sign a four year contract why does he need to pay a third party(agent, brother or his mum) to tell him to move to the other end of the country after only 30 months into his contact ? my point being is why 4th div. average players think that by giving part of their earnings to a spiv(sic) would/should make them richer than a skilled electrician et al. So grow up and enjoy being paid for what little talent you have.

I personally would prefer Hanson playing for us rather than againsts us. He's a real handful for defences if we get the right players in he will double his goal tally.

Apart from Benson is reputed to still have a dodgy knee, Hanson does not.
Canio considers Benson to be his best signing - he has scored 12 in25matches,
Hanson 14 in 44.
Will either or both score tomorrow ?

can't compare the stats.....

Hanson contiues to fare well in a defensive first team with only one winger providing service. Even this service can be hit and miss (personally thought that Comptons crosses were more consistently delivered better and from the right areas) and because theres only one provider its easy to set-up against. Thus Hanson simply does not get the desired service often enough.

He is however a good player at this level. He plays better with a willing runner. In wells he has that and earlier in the season he had Stewart. Prior to this he had Evans (when his head was right and thus jimmy scored 17).

Better corners would also help. This is also to be witnessed in the very few goals scored by our central defenders. Most of them a Total wasted opportunity.

Jimmy works very hard and Wells' rise and goals are very much indebted to the work of Hanson as well. Indeed Wells 2 scoring spells were alongside Jimmy.

Both decent strikers and hard/willing chasers. Wit a more consisitent attacking focused side they can/will score goals.....

good luck Jimmy and a good season for you all things considered......
