Banned Bradford City brawl trio can still play key role
7:50am Friday 30th March 2012 in Sport
By Simon Parker, Bradford City Reporter
Former City captain Guy Branston is poised to return to the side at Plymouth
Phil Parkinson will not banish City’s disgraced trio from the climax to their season.
Luke Oliver, Andrew Davies and Jon McLaughlin have all stayed away from the training ground ahead of tomorrow’s critical trip to survival rivals Plymouth.
None will be available again for Parkinson until after the Easter weekend at least as they serve bans following the battle of Crawley.
The Bantams are not expected to appeal after the Football Association tonight charged them with failing to control their players.
But City’s boss insists the guilty trio still have a role to play before the campaign is over.
Parkinson said: “When you do something (wrong), you have to pay the penalty. But once that’s happened, we’ll carry on and make sure they are ready for the part of the season they can play in.
With the lads who got sent off missing, it gives those others the opportunity and I’m sure they will take it
Phil Parkinson
“The most important thing is we win enough games between now and the end of the season. Being without those players makes it more difficult. But when they are available after the relevant bans, of course they’ll be used if they are needed.”
Crawley have been handed the same charge following Tuesday’s brawl.
There is also an added charge for Pablo Mills, one of the five players sent off, as well as a new one for Kyle McFadzean.
But Parkinson’s thoughts are trained on the Home Park clash with the side three points and three places behind.
Matt Duke returns in goal after being recalled from Northampton and Guy Branston is set for his first City game since October alongside Lee Bullock at centre half.
Parkinson said: “We sent Matt out on loan to get games and he’s done well. He comes back in good form and I know he’s a very good goalkeeper.
“Guy’s professionalism has been first class and he gets his opportunity now. With the lads who got sent off missing, it gives those others the opportunity and I’m sure they will take it.
“The three players weren’t here yesterday because I thought it was best they stayed away. Let Steve (Parkin) and I focus on the team.
“How do I lift morale? I could try and have a jovial training session. But to be fair, the only way to lift morale is to go to Plymouth and get the result.”
Simon Ramsden is fit to return after missing Tuesday as a precaution with a tight hamstring. In hindsight, that decision has done Parkinson a favour, especially with left back Matt Fry troubled by his groin.
Ricky Ravenhill also hopes to recover in time from the painful kick on the ankle he suffered from a lunging foul by Crawley striker Leon Clarke.
Plymouth have lost only one of their last eight home games, although five have ended in draws. Carl Fletcher’s side have also tightened up considerably at the back and have let in only five goals from ten outings.
Fletcher last week brought in namesake Steve and the 39-year-old former Bournemouth battering ram, who used to have some real duels with David Wetherall, could make his home debut.
It will be City’s first visit to the most southerly ground in England since August 1994, when Paul Jewell scored a hat-trick in a 5-1 win.

Branston is obviously not in parkinsons long term thoughts at bradford.
Branno is a solid pro who will not let anybody down , should he be thrust into action.
For me the Plymouth game is do not loose game.
As soon as bradford are safe from the drop.
Serious questions have to be asked as to what really is the isssue as to why any manager coming in can not get US into a top half lge 2 finish????.
Me I think there's issues behind the scenes at bradford.

I would find it difficult to point out any individuals that have had an awful season nor that of a fantastic one.
If players were sent out to do what they are good at and play to individual strengths, winning would breed confidence and a very very succesful team in this league.
I blame 1 man for our awful season but I am hoping he has realised the best form of defence is not to be very very rigid and defensive.
Some say he didnt have a pre-season and next year will be the big firework display. Well who am I or any of us to say their opinion is wrong.
I am confident we will survive if Parkie has turned that little corner and lets hope people like Gspot are right about this massive pre-season.

So you feel the club is running along nicely do you????.
Over the last 3 years to me massive mistakes have been made and those at the top of this football club should look at there position and ask themselves what a total fiasco this season has been???.
The Jackson mess!!!!.
The Archie Christie mess!!!!.
Parkinsons poor run of form!!!.
The whole direction of this club is changed season to season with a chairman who's public relations with supporters is laughable.
No those in charge at the top should take responsabillity

Yes, if a person who has committed a 'crime' has served his/her sentence (whether football 'crime' or in the wider world) they SHOULD be allowed to 'move on' and start afresh with a clean 'slate.'
However, the problem is..the 'sentence' for those three players (and the Crawley Players too) has NOT been ..FINALISED!!
Yes, the 'three' have been given immediate bans of Davies-5/McLoughlin-
3/Oliver 3. But...is that the end of it?
Well, most probably..NO!
The chances are a further punishment is going to be following...in its slipstream which 'could' be worse for those three but, more worringly for Bradford City itself.
As a City fan, I'm hoping that that punishment will be 'moderate', 'measured' and certainly not significant enough to jeopardise the club's existence in League Two or...even the club's 'existence' (which could be put at risk by relegation to the non-leagues!!)
'PP'/ML/JR need to think VERY carefully before making public statements through the media which MAY give the impression (particularly to the FA!!) that they (think the issue is over) do not take the antics of Tuesday night seriously enough!!!
I would say a large dose of repentence/contritio
n is the 'way to go' (for every possible reason!!) at the moment (whether its felt genuinely or not!!)

Time for some fresh blood in the boardroom if you ask me.
A change is has good as a rest!!!.
Chairman could take a bk seat keep his money invested in the club and bring in a managing directer who's got experiance running a football club and chairman lawn can go back to watching the games as a,supporter.

Managers resignations and a back-scene one too....
a huge amount of cheap option loans been used.....
nearly 40 players year on year....
short term thinking.....
Parky hasn't helped himself but was he TOLD to get rid of certain players and then despite the nearly 40 used the reality is a lesser amount. There does appear to have been players frozen out since Parkys appoinment and this fits in with Lawn's comment/view......

Players like Davies, Jones, Reid, Fagan and Dagnall are (in my opinion) good enough to be pushing on much higer.
Then we have Syers & Williams who (in my opinion) have the potential/ability to also do the same.
Oliver - is a very effective centre half with the right partner.
Hanson - been linked with higher league teams.
Ravenhill - has proven it but getting on a bit
We have also had Moore, Devitt and probably others I cant think of..
All the above is enough to suggest Mr Parkinson has under achieved.
In Parkies defence politics in football are bigger then ever so are his hands tied? (Doesnt mean he has to have a negative approach though)

Development squads gone,no one of note coming through, We just seem to have been "winging it" (well not on the right) for most of the season with loan signings, players in the squad out the next, tactics, team selections different week by week and now we could pay a heavy price. I can only really put this down to PP, his management in so many areas has been poor. Have his hands being tied? I'm not sure, he seems to have had free reign to bring in a whole cast of players, ML can't be criticised for not giving the backing can he?.

You mention Davies, Jones, Reid, Fagan and Dagnall capable of playing at a higher level, well out of them theres only Jones (who is mostly out of favour) and Reid who will be here next season, as it is at the moment. Of the rest you mention there is only Williams, Ravenhill and Hanson with us. Hanson has been linked with higher teams apparently..I only know of maybe Motherwell. He's got better as the seasons gone on but as a minimum for a CF he needs to be getting 15 goals which hopefully he will do,if he took more chances that came his way he could be on 20+ by now and then there may be some justification with links to higher teams.
I just hope we can stumble through the next few matches and stop up, with yet another re-think for next season.

When I say his hands have been tied, I do not mean he has not had the backing of the chairmen. I mean after every victory in the last few months there have been strange decisons in relation to team selection. Football is very political these days and I think when the club feel safe/safer (after picking up 3 points) they pick a team which will accumalate the lowest weekly wage bill (avoid appearance fees).
That might also answer your comment re Jones being out of favour.
So I am not criticising Mark Lawn.
You disgard Williams as a player we have capable of playing at a higher level as being 'one of ours' well he is and if he isn't that is either a decision taken by Parkie or a political one, so therefore I feel I can include him in my theory of just how good we should be (or are on paper).

With an attitude like that, we're already down...
Duke. not wanted by City nor the supporters .Branston castigated by the same, come back Williams as posted on here, on and on and etc! now we(you, the scribes ) expect the rejects to don the superman outfits and do a George Galloway, now I really do feel the demise of league status becoming nearer and I cry when looking back from 1957 until 2012.

Wasn't meaning to give the impression I had disgarded Williams as one of ours, but whether he can play at a higher level is open to question for me,he came from non league football so is totally untried at higher levels than what we are at. He does occasionally look very good but other times not so and his attitude comes over a bit wrong sometimes. Hopefully Terry Butcher may be teaching him a few things.
At least at the end of the season the deadwood will be gone and perhaps we can re-sign some of the better ones (Syers etc) if they are in favour with PP of course. I am sure nobody will be signing a contract with BCFC anymore based on appearance fee's if your theory is correct!

@northyorksbantam
Jones is definately something more than just a decision based on his performances surely?

Well, I can't say i'm as positive as you, but i'm trying to be. Branston for me will struggle tomorrow, I've got no problem with Duke taking over in goal though, he's decent enough, will be good to see Rambo back... UP THE BANTAMS!!!
I feel we will do ok tomorrow.

Let's go out for the win, but if we can't manage that, then a point would be a pretty good result considering the week we've had.
It's about time we got that bit of luck and won one of these tight games, as too many have gone against us this season.
