Ben Jeffries believes there is plenty more to come from him as the Bulls seek to cause a major upset when Super League leaders Warrington visit Odsal this evening.

The Australian, 31, lined up at half-back for his first appearance of the season during last weekend’s visit to his former club Wakefield.

Jeffries took his opportunity with aplomb, directing his team around the field with skill and authority whilst creating several tries with intelligent kicks in the 36-18 victory.

Yet Jeffries, who now looks set for an extended run in the side – with Luke Gale set for at least six weeks on the sidelines – says he did not hit top gear.

“I was happy with my game but I could have played a lot better,” he said.

“Fortunately a few kicks went my way and made me look better than they probably were.

“You’ve just got to take your chance when you get it.

“I had the chance to relax a bit in the first three rounds and sometimes you get to look at your own game and the team’s game and see what you can bring to the side.

“I was just happy for the boys that we got the two points.

“It’s unbelievable how much stick you cop on the sidelines against a former club so it made it even sweeter to get one over on them.

“While there’s a few things I’ve got to work on, overall I was pretty happy with my first game.

“When you win like that you pick up a lot of confidence and we’ll take that into this week against Warring-ton.”

Confidence has been high among Mick Potter’s players at their Tong training HQ this week but Jeffries accepts that Warrington will pose a far sterner test than Wakefield.

Former Leeds coach Tony Smith has transformed the Wolves’ fortunes in recent seasons, guiding them to two successive Challenge Cup final victories and making them among the favourites to win the Super League title at Old Trafford in October.

The Bulls face a mountainous task to topple Smith’s men but Jeffries accepts they need to start performing and getting results on home soil.

Catalan Dragons and Wigan both won convincingly at Odsal in rounds one and three and Jeffries believes his side must try and make the famous old stadium a fortress.

“They’re a pretty decent side, Warrington,” said Jeffries with more than a hint of understatement.

“They’ve got threats all over the park, a lot of offloads, but every game is tough.

“You need to make your home a fortress.

“You don’t want teams thinking they’re going to come and get an easy two points.

“We understand that the fans can get impatient when they come to Odsal and don’t see a win.

“We’re expecting to put on a good show on. Hopefully we will and get the two points.

“Consistency is what you need at this level and when you get that you probably come up with 75 per cent wins. Hopefully we can start doing that going into March, Easter and beyond.”

Manase Manuokafoa is poised to make his debut in this evening’s televised clash and Jeffries reckons the competition for places will help to keep players on their toes.

He reasoned: “We’ve got a pretty big squad this year, over 30 players, and a lot of them have Super League experience.

“I think it’s told already. We’ve had a few injuries but players have come in and put in some good performances.

“You’ve got to play your part. We’re here as a squad and you go out and play as a squad.”
