Bradford Bulls heavily beaten as Gale joins casualty list

First published in Sport Bradford Telegraph and Argus: Photograph of the Author by , Bradford Bulls Reporter

Bulls 16 Wigan 54 Luke Gale became the latest player to join the Bulls' casualty list after being helped off the field after just 10 minutes of today's thumping defeat to Wigan.

The England Knights scrum-half sustained ankle ligament damage and was replaced by Heath L'Estrange before Bradford went on to ship four first-half scores and another six after the break.

Josh Charnley, Pat Richards and Gareth Hock all touched down to put the Warriors 16-0 up, but the Bulls hit back through Jason Crookes and a delightful long-range effort from Jarrod Sammut.

Yet Wigan claimed another try through Chris Tuson just before the break and then ran amok in the second half as Mick Potter's were seriously outclassed.

Darrell Goulding (2), Tuson, Liam Farrell (2) and Charnley all went over to further expose the Bulls' defensive frailties.

Brett Kearney hit back for Bradford with a close-range score in the 70th minute, which Sammut converted, but the game was long since over as a contest.

Add me to that, themanofsteel. Far more constructive things to do than watch this clueless shower.

How many stayed to the end?

Totally, utterly, completely useless.

The Board need to act now, otherwise who on earth is going to bother turning up to watch this garbage.

18 points conceded in just 6 minutes. Wigan just looked at which side our defence was loaded and in two passes created a 4 to two overlap. We were very lucky only to let in just 54. No organisation. I really can't fault individials for effort, Langley tackled like a man possessed. I am afraid in my oppinion it is down to the coaches, systems and again defence. Defence wins games. After 3 years of McNamara and one of Potter I am finding it hard to look for the positives. A drubbing by Warrington should just be the iceing on the cake. Potter take note and start looking for a new coach.

What can the board do ? sack Potter & get who ? bring in better player like who ? we have what we have & I for one will continue to support the club. We were outclassed by the best side by far in super league but until the end we battled on. We are n average at best team who were beaten by shear class.

Sorry but I can see exactly what we are an average team who are trying to survive in a league thats run by big money backers who give big money back handers. Look at Wigans squad they are under the same cap as us ! open your eyes. I can also see what you are ! giving your ticket away never going again grow up are you 10 ? We are far from the worst club in super league but we have not the resource of passion anymore as a club to compete with the top 6 clubs simple as that. I will go to the Warrington game expecting to win like I go to all games expecting to win. If you go expecting to lose your right to hand your ticket in.

Came away totally embarassed but not at all surprised. As some of us have been saying (and at the risk of being hung drawn and quartered)the new signings are simply not up to scratch. Certainly the new players are not what the Bulls need right now. We need to see some marquis signings. Players who have excelled at the very top instead of the dross we have heard so many praising. No more players from the bottom clubs please and only Aussies who have been doing it week in week out in the NRL. If we can't secure any such players then muddle on until we can. This club is becoming a haven for players who have either lost their way or are simply not good enough.

Can everyone check their watches? It is not 2003 and we are NOT, repeat NOT, the team we were once.

We are now a bunch of average players and as a club don't not a lot of money. Stop going to games if you wish, blame Potter for it but it won't change the reality of it.

We were outclassed by a much better side -end of. That doesn't mean the lads are a 'joke' or 'not bothered'...it means they aren't good enough. BUT they never gave up trying and that will do for me. It's tough at the bottom but it's where we are -learn to accept it and back the team accordingly. Don't expect world class performances from average but willing players and see how we go.

A final point: Steve Ganson is a joke and needs retiring from top flight RL. He's extremely poor.

Never expected us to win, but I expected a bit more fight. Gutted about Gale's injury: he looked in a bad way; hope he's not out for 12-16 weeks as is typical of the injury. We are 2 dirty rock hard forwards, a loose forward and a spare centre away from being top 6 material. But like most other fans: I'm Bradford through and through and will always keep cheering them on. Wigan were nearly relegated not so many years back; got to believe we'll get back up there in time.

Sorry. We're at least seven (quality) players short of a top six side.

Enough of dreaming, however, we're a bottom three side and likely to stay there for the foreseeable future. The cash lifeline from the ground will be dissipated to subsidise lost revenue at the gate....and then its crisis time!

I personally saw today no defence on the right handside of the team today.
Wigan cut us to ribbons again on the fringes.
We did OK until "Gale" until went off, but we then lost direction and leadership.
When we are under the cosh we seem to go into our shell's?
Again "Sammut" who had a strong game, except for not- kicking to touch again, twice after missing touch last week a Cas did'nt disappoint again .
"Mr Potter" this is a cardinal sin?
The guy needs to paying a club fine to his chosen charity if now keeps missing kicks to touch again!!
"L'Strange! keeps blind passing when he just needed to pass the "ball directly into the Bread -Basket",therefore we kept turning over the ball to Wigan when we applied pressure.
"Platt " obviously now feels he had his nose pushed out therefore played like he was'nt really bothered ,but he was'nt the only one?
Never reallised "Whitehead of Lulia" were playing today because we always were on the backfoot..
Injuries are now adding up in the squad If ,I was "Mr Hood" I would now be giving "Mr Potter", an utimuatium and stop having a squad where he buys players and then never gives them a chance?
This has been proven today at Fetherstone .Who came on and was man of the match?

"Kyle Briggs" no less!!
Do the sum's "Mr Potter".I know we wont win every game this year, but by alienating all your new recruit, every season, you wont add the team morale?

Now onto Wakey?

This is game we should be winning?

I agree with RL Ron's sane comments. Let's try to keep a sense of proportion. Last year we were very handicapped by injuries to players - two first choice hookers out for much of the season for example - and this year we already have Purtell and Donaldson out, Lulia played his first game today, Manukofoa has not yet played and Elima won't be back until March. And the crushing blow of Gale's injury today adds to the list. Gale will be missed not just for his kicking but for his organization. You can't say the players didn't try today, they did, but they are not, even with all the injured back, good enough to beat Wigan or the top four sides. Why can't people who complain see that. How many of us who went there today expected us to win - look at the Wigan team sheet and the boys who have come up through Academy Champ sides. Let's encourage our lads, stop dreaming of Noble's team of all the talents and all the spending which got us in this mess, and become realistic. If we make the top ten we'll have done well. And while you're at it, just enjoy some scintillating play from Wigan, which deserved the applause of some of the fans round me.

Sorry can't agree. A team gets 50 points put passed them and you blame the referee!!

the fact is we won't outclassed. Wigan won't exactly special. We were just pathetic. Missing one on one tackles. No line speed. No sliding defence. Nothing in attack and no aggression r pride in the shirt. I don't mind losing or been beaten by a bettet team.

What i can't stand is the players having no pride in the shirt and putting performances like that. Missing 1-1 tackles is unacceptable. the team don't seem to have anything about them, no aggression pride or motivation. Someone should have cleaned Hock out with all is pathetic antics early on, but we have no one to stand up to the opposition. They look like a team of boys.

they would have strugggled to beat the mini leagues tody!!!

how can you trust a coach to do a good job if he's stupid enough to let good players go and and put 9 new signings on in his first game as coach. i thought last year he was a mistake and now he's proved it. you can't get a team with 9 new signings to gel for a long time. then at the end of the season say lessons have been learnt, and do the same basic errors again and again. iestyn harris was a big mistake thats cost bfd badly in compo. thats why there's a shortage of money at the club. i think those that played badly should play in the b team and some of those young lads come up to the 1st team. watch those kids play their hearts out, they want to play for bradford bulls and will run/tackle till they drop. i'd rather watch kids try hard than 1st team players just turn out and play mediocre rugby.

All we needed was Ash Lumby and Blue Kingi to complete it! Complete and utter crap! And you can forget all that nonsense about Noble coming back, what we need is a total change away from the bootroom mentality and a complete fresh start with a new coaching staff completely unconnected with the 'glory years'. They would then be freed from the wight of expectation that currently exists. Will the next Brian Smith please come to save us before it is too late! In 45 years, I have NEVER felt so angry as I do tonight!

Unfortunately (fortunately?), I could only listen to the Radio Leeds commentary on the match. Earl Crabtree made some incisive comments - Ganson likes to take centre stage; Wigan are using the game as a training exercise; last week's Bulls win was in the mud, this is a perfect day for top of the ground rugby!
Reality check. We were never going to beat Wigan. However, it appears there was total capitulation - one player goes off injured and the rest throw in the towel! Alarm bells were ringing when the name Platt appeared on the team sheet. All that pride and passion we were asking for just evaporated. But here's how the season will pan out (and I know it's early doors):
Teams the Bulls should beat: Widnes, Wakefield, Broncos and Salford.
Teams the Bulls will be competitive against and maybe beat: Castleford, Hull KR and Leeds (only because they are our fiercest rivals).
Teams who we will not beat and suffer variable degrees of humliation: Wigan, Warrington, Saints, Catalan, Huddersfield and Hull.
Now do the maths and the season will be pretty much the same as last - finishing about tenth but possibly making eight. If you want more then I'm afraid you'll have to travel down one of the roads away from Odsal.
Yes, Potter will be gone at the end of the season but Hood will be still with us. The ground sold, the director's repaid and the season ticket money in the bag. As someone quite rightly commented, no reason to hear from Peter Hood until the next round of season ticket sales comes about. Sad but life is tough and, if you are following the Bulls, it's about to get tougher!

Just on your remarks about Smith. He is no trophy winner but as a CEO no one comes close. This guy knows management and how to put structures in place. He is the ideal person to rescue a failing business and quickly get it back on a sound footing, he is then quite capable of appointing the right man to win the trophys. Oh how I wish we had him back.
