Silsden’s Garry Thompson is hoping victory in the Lancashire Open darts tournament can spur him on to a bigger success later this month.
The 47-year-old gained revenge on Paul Jennings for his BDO World Championship defeat by beating him 5-3 in the final at Fleetwood to win the red-rose crown.
Thompson, who picked up a £1,500 cheque for his efforts, is now preparing for the BDO Scottish Open, which he won back in 2008.
The Yorkshire player, who lost 3-1 to 12th seed Jennings in the first round at Lakeside, said: “I put a lot of practice in for the World Champs but it never happened for me and I started too slowly.
“Hopefully the practice is now starting to pay off. I played really well in the Lancashire Open. There were some good players there and there was some decent prize-money. I was happy to win something at last!”
Thompson continued his good form with a 4-0 singles victory in Yorkshire’s triumph at Oxfordshire in the BDO Inter-Counties Championship Premier Division.
But he suffered a second-round exit at the Dutch Open last weekend as World Championship finalist Tony O’Shea clinched the title.
The Scottish Open takes place at Renfrew next weekend.
