Bradford Grammar School staged one of the few hockey fixtures in the county at the weekend – Bingley Bees against Halifax Fourths in Yorkshire Men’s Division Six North.
Halifax were very surprised that the match was on but each side had opportunities to score, despite the exceptional cold.
Matthew Clough put Bingley ahead, intercepting a pass and then outpacing the visitors’ defence before shooting home strongly from the edge of the D.
However, Halifax levelled before half-time and took the lead in the second half.
With the weather starting to close in and snow falling, the Bees made it 2-2 when Ben Clough’s shot from a short corner was initially saved but the rebound fell to him and was placed past the keeper, low to his right.
The game was halted as the umpires chatted about the worsening conditions, and both captains agreed to continue.
Sadly for Bingley it was a fateful decision as Halifax pinched a late goal to triumph, the match ending with the pitch covered in snow.
