Bradford Bulls prop Nick Scruton praises Phil Joseph for making life-changing decision

New Bulls recruit Phil Joseph has been given a ringing endorsement by Nick Scruton – more than 12 years after the pair played together for England.

Joseph, 26, was handed a one-year deal at Odsal following a successful trial spell during the close-season.

He was playing on a part-time basis for Swinton last year, while running a bar in his home town of Huddersfield, before deciding he wanted a future in Super League.

The prop came through the ranks at Huddersfield Giants before drifting out of the professional ranks and playing for the likes of Swinton, Hull KR, Halifax, Oldham and Swinton again.

Now back in the top flight, Joseph is determined to make his mark and could make his Super League debut for Mick Potter’s side in Sunday’s trip to Castleford.

Scruton said: “Phil’s done a brilliant job for us since he arrived at the club.

“I’ve known him for a long time, having gone on tour with him with England Under-16s for a month to Australia.

“I was 15 at the time and am 27 now, so yes, I’m knocking on a bit!

“But I’m chuffed for Phil that he’s got this chance.

“He had a bar in Huddersfield and said ‘I’m 26 and having a bar isn’t the kind of lifestyle I want as a rugby player’.

“Credit to him; he’s sold his bar, has concentrated on his rugby and it’s showing.”

Joseph featured in all three of the Bulls’ pre-season friendlies against Castleford, Dewsbury and Hull, earning praise from Potter after each game.

Although he was overlooked for last weekend’s Super League opener at home to Catalan Dragons, Joseph is pushing for selection this week.

Scruton added: “I remember speaking to Phil when he first arrived and had his first day of training with us.

“I said ‘are you looking forward to this?’ He replied ‘you don’t often get a second chance like this and I’m going to make the most of it.’ “He really has done as well, and showed the rest of us how to do it.

“I think he was our best front-rower in the pre-season games.

“Like he said himself, you don’t often get a second chance but now he has got it, he’s made the most of it. He’s buzzing round in training every day.”

Scruton, meanwhile, said the Bulls are working hard to put things right at Castleford this weekend after the emphatic defeat at the hands of Catalan.

He added: “Nobody was more disappointed than us with our performance against Catalan but we need to learn from our mistakes and right the wrongs this week against Cas.”

Meanwhile, the RFL’s match-review panel have issued a formal caution to Jamie Langley for tripping Catalan scrum-half Scott Dureau during Sunday’s defeat.

This says everything about the club right now. To call him brilliant or even suggest hes done a brilliant job is rediculous. He's a part timer from the National League who has shone in our pack, that's what should be telling us something.

Yes scruton! Joseph has done a good job for bulls! A much better one that you have done with your constant injuries and below par performances. You were diabolical on Sunday up your game or out!

For me Phil Joseph should have been in 17 against Catalans, and after watching the game, he should defo come in now against Cas and I would drop Scrutes to fit Joesph in. Scrutes & Bryn do the same job - at least Koppy, Tom & Joseph as front rowers bring something different. MP must also give more game time to Koppy as he at least makes some yards. Shame Bateman got injured cos he was putting himself about, but with Eliot & Elima to come back in. Though Gale & Sammut looked ok and hopefully with time will improve. The defeat on Sunday may in hindsight as the season goes on may be just a reflection of a good side in Catalans - as I expect them to have a good season - Hendo & Durreau looked awesome and they are a big physical side with plenty of players to come in. Not all bad poss for Bulls - trying to look on bright side - but Cas will be a hard game on Sun.

I for one want to see Phil and Tom out there so we always have a big unit in play for the full game.
Both the lads should be able to drive a few holes through the Cas line and give us a shot at their line.
The main thing though we really need to cut out the penalties when we have them under pressure and hopefully give our self’s at least a chance of putting some points on the board.
Just one more point, after seeing all the warm up games one bright light is shining, Luke Gale is on 100% with hi’s kicking.
COM’ON YOU BULLS.

If scruton has another 3 years left then it's exactly the same situation as platt, Sykes and Langley- all past it and shouldn't get in bulls team but cannot be dropped or shown the door because of the big bucks they are on. Sad times ahead it would seem

I thought Gales kicking on Sunday was OK - nothing brilliant, he made yardage but didn't always find space or turn the fullback/winger round

I think it will be Mr Potter, in his team selection, team tactics and team motivation, that will be under the microscope against Castleford. We have the players to compete (and I didn't say win) but they just don't seem to want to. Sport is about trying to win, to have that single focus, and it should be especially apparent in professionals. You've got to dig deep. I'll keep saying it - pride and passion in the shirt and the side. Oh, how I'd love to wipe the smile off Mr Millward's face!

Must admit I find it hard to understand why Crookes gets on the team sheet as often as he does. Esp with a fit Ainscough waiting in the wings, not to mention KP when fit (and trying hard!)

I'd like to see joseph given a start at Cas, probably in favour of scruton. Its often been said we need to add a bit of biff to our pack, and whilst he's a rough article in many ways, I've never seen him take a backward step.

I'm looking forward to this weekend, as i think it will be a better indicator of where we are in comparison to teams around us. I'd stick my neck out and say the catalans could well be a top three side this year

I agree with Barbarian Mike, swap Langey and Donaldson round, with Addy on the bench for Sibbit.
Sibbit should be nowhere near the team, how he is a Super League player is beyond me. He does try bless him, but he's just no good!!!!
Must also agree with Bullslad that Hargreaves and Walker aren't up to it either and that we do need Elima and Bert back quick time!!!
