Denholme’s Rebekah Tiler was in top form in the under-13 and under-15 West Yorkshire sportshall athletics trials at the Richard Dunn Sports Centre.
The Bingley Grammar School pupil set two of the three records on the day as entrants tried to gain selection for the Yorkshire regional finals in Halifax on Sunday, February 19.
Tiler’s time of 25 seconds for the two-lap race and a vertical jump of 73 centimetres were under-13 girls’ record-breakers, the latter not only beating her own effort of 67cm from last year but also equalling the UK record set back in 1999.
Not satisfied with these achievements, the talented Bingley Harriers youngster also won the one-lap time trial in 12.9sec and the standing long jump with a leap of 2.37 metres, sealing her Aviva female athlete of the match award.
The other record set was Queensbury’s One in a Million pupil Ambah Thompson’s 7.16m in the standing triple jump.
Leon Greenwood (Spen Valley Sports College) also won four events – the under-15 boys’ two-lap and four-lap races, the standing long jump and the shot – but the Aviva male athlete of the match award went to William Morris of Horsforth School.
Morris took the two-lap under-13 boys race, the obstacle time trial and the one-lap time trial. He was also second in the four-lap final, the vertical jump and the speed bounce.
Other winners included Sam Afari (Dixons Academy), Luca Zenti (Parkside), Lucy Tindall (St Mary’s), Watson Peel (Brighouse High), Abigail White (Ilkley Grammar), Kelsey Sutcliffe (Bingley Grammar) and Megan Ascough (St Joseph’s).
Over 100 boys and girls came to the Odsal venue and the West Yorkshire teams have been selected on an all-round basis as each athlete has to compete in three categories of events in Halifax, hence some individual winners were not picked.
Athletes taking part were from Leeds, Bradford, Huddersfield, Halifax and Wakefield and although numbers were down on last year, West Yorkshire have still ended up with a strong team that is quite capable of progressing to the UK finals.
