Six Quest Taekwondo members are travelling to Germany this weekend to compete at the Children’s International Taekwondo Championships in Stuttgart.

They are Baildon’s Zak Spencer and Rotherham’s Shane Burgin, both seven, Rebecca Weir, of Baildon, who is eight, and nine-year-olds Liam Burdock and Jamie Kidd, both of Silsden, and Liam Exley of Shipley.

Quest Taekwondo prepared for the championships by attending a one-on-one competition at Barnsley last weekend.

The aim of the competition was to give match time to Olympic-style taekwondo competitors ahead of eliminator competitions.

Quest Taekwondo, coached by Rick Simpson and Karl Mann, took eight to a competition that was attended by about 150 entrants.

Natasha Burdock, 14, of Silsden, defeated Anila Afsar of Ultimate Taekwondo (Doncaster).

Other wins were for Rebecca Weir (8, of Baildon), Jake Barnett (15, of Baildon), Sam Mason (10, of Baildon), Sam Finnigan (11, of Oxenhope), Jason Mann (9, of Greengates) and Liam Exley (9, of Shipley).

Head coach Simpson, who was recently promoted to Class One (international pool) Centre Referee, was delighted at their performances and is looking forward to taking his full team of over 20 players to the Scorpion Open Championships in Barnsley on Sunday, February 19.

Quest Taekwondo’s success has come on the back of a successful 2011, where they won countless medals in domestic competitions.

Quest Taekwondo also recently opened new clubs at Beckfoot School (Bingley) and the Springfield Centre (Thorpe Edge, Bradford) where these athletes train, as well as their contingent of other training venues that Simpson and Mann also teach at, in Keighley, Cottingley, Baildon and Greengates.
