The final event in Airienteers’ Spring Sprint League was run at Roundhay Park on Wednesday, June 7.

Sprint orienteering requires quick and accurate decision-making about route-choice as well as basic sprinting speed, and Bradford’s Ian Nixon won a hotly-contested race in an impressive time of 22.49.

Paul Liepins from Dewsbury was second in 24.15 with Tim Patterson from Headingley third in 25.28.

Steve Webb, George Stevens, Sam Brown, Steve Watkins, Geoff Clarke, Scott Marshall (first junior) and Ruth Ker (first woman) were the other runners finishing in the top ten.

The overall men’s winner of Aire Sprint League 2011 was Tim Patterson (196pts) with David Alcock (195pts) and Steve Watkins (194pts) second and third respectively. Scott Marshall (M14) from Burley-in-Wharfedale was the first junior (166pts), while JoyceMarshall (200pts), Sue Stevens (195pts), and Angela Hulley (188pts) were the top three women.

The first event in Airienteers’ Summer Sprint League was held at Nunroyd Park, Guiseley, on Wednesday, June 15 with Menston’s Robert Kelly emerging victorious in 18.59 with David Alcock ten seconds adrift in 19.09 and Baildon’s Steve Watkins third in 19.16. Other top-ten finishers were Steve Webb (20.42), Ian Nixon (20.44), Geoff Clarke (20.49), Joe Woodley (20.55) (first Junior), Andrew Kelly (21.44), George Stevens (23.07) and Ian Marshall (24.03). Claire Towler was the first woman in 27.15.
