Marc Herbert hopes to follow a well-trodden path to Super League success.

Seen as a potential answer to the Bulls’ scrum-half shortage, the 23-year-old has settled well since arriving from Canberra last month.

But if he had any doubt how to take the next step in his new surroundings, a former Raiders team-mate has pointed the way forward.

Michael Dobson has twice made the journey from Australia’s capital club to the northern hemisphere’s elite competition, handling the transition with aplomb on both occasions.

An initial spell with Catalans and Wigan in 2006 highlighted Dobson’s potential – enough to earn a return to Canberra – before a switch to Hull KR in 2008 saw his career take off.

Selection in back-to-back Super League Dream Teams is an indicator of the esteem in which the Rovers scrum half is held – setting a significant benchmark for the ambitious Herbert.

“Definitely, he’s shown there’s a way forward here,” said the Bulls’ most recent off-season signing.

“He’s really made a name for himself and he’s going well. I’ll be coming up against him this year so it’ll be good to see how I go.

“It’s my goal to make a mark in Super League and that’s the main reason why I came here. I’ve got a point to prove and hopefully I can do it.

“It will take time to settle but that’s always the case. We’ll be ready by the time it all comes around so I’m looking forward to it.”

But if Dobson has provided something to aspire to, Herbert is keen to avoid comparisons with another Australian field general.

The Canberra-born star looks set to inherit the Bulls’ No 7 jersey from departing compatriot Matt Orford but insists he is a very different player.

“It is a different situation,” said Herbert. “He didn’t get to play as many games as he probably would’ve liked last year so I guess it’s going to be hard to compare to him.

“I’ll bring my own sort of game and I’ll be working with Mick (Potter), who’s a new coach as well, so it’ll be a different scenario.

“My organisational skills are a strong point but it would be good to get my running game going and my kicking game as well.

“Mick’s spoken to me about what we want and we’ve had a run through of different structures and different plays.

“It’s all looking good and I just want to get in amongst it as soon as I can.”
