Knottingley 21, Keighley 6
Keighley were intent on starting the season with a victory but were frustrated by a workmanlike Knottingley pack and an excellent kicking performance from diminutive full back Brad Rowlandson.
Although Keighley looked the sharper outfit, they were unable to gain sufficiently quick second phase ball to trouble the Knottingley defence.
Rowlandson opened the scoring with a penalty, closely followed by a long distance dropped goal. Keighley were forced to chase the game and lacked precision and composure, and too often squandered good opportunities.
A flat pass from Keighley’s Alex Brown was easily intercepted by winger P Rockett, who raced 50 yards to score in the corner, converted by Rowlandson.
Alex Brown managed two penalties in reply. Towards the end of the game Knottingley were intent on maintaining possession through their forwards, an excellent tactic which frustrated Keighley and led to a try for Rowlandson, who also managed a fine drop goal to bring the match to a close.
