Otley have been dealt a massive eve-of-season blow with the news that skipper Howard Parr will not be playing for them.
Parr is a Squadron Leader in the RAF and is stationed at High Wycombe.
Last season he made the 400-mile round trip for Thursday training and match days, but additional work commitments mean he has had to call a halt on his Otley career.
Director of rugby Gary Walker revealed the news to his squad on Tuesday night and appointed new flanker Jamie Sutton as the team’s captain.
Walker, who is preparing his team for the opening National League One game against Blaydon at Cross Green on Saturday, said: “Obviously it is a big blow.
“Howard is a wonderful guy who showed such wonderful commitment and leadership.
“He has taken this decision in the best interests of the club and we wish him well. I am hopeful that we haven’t seen the last of him.”
Parr is expected to play rugby near to his base but Walker added: “We can only hope he gets stationed back up north in the future.”
Sutton, who has spent the last three years playing in France, was captain of his club for the last two, gaining valuable experience.
Walker said: “Jamie has knowledge of leadership and I am sure he will do well.”
Walker has yet to finalise his team for Saturday’s opening game but injuries will rule hooker Harry Hannan, prop Adam Kemsley and backs Christian Georgiou and Joe Gill out of contention.
