There are times when being a footballer is the greatest job in the world. But then there are other times, like last week, when it all goes wrong.
It’s a horrible position to be in, knowing you’ve let everyone down. You feel terrible but you’ve just got to take it on the chin and take all the criticism coming your way. We didn’t perform and we have to take responsibility for that.
Playing last Friday means it’s been a long wait between games. If we’d won, that would have meant a great week with everyone in good spirits. But when you lose and play like that, everybody is down and you realise you’re in for a rough time. It’s now up to ourselves as professionals to work extra hard to put things right.
I’d been really looking forward to the Southend game and maybe it might have been different if that early chance for James had gone in. But then we left the guy at the back post to put them 1-0 up and everything deteriorated from there.
All the hype of playing Friday night disappeared and it turned into a damp squib.
The good thing about the profession we are in is that we get the chance to sort it out straight away – and I’m glad our next game is at home again.
It’s vitally important to get a win but also to give it everything and put in a performance to restore some faith with our supporters. Then hopefully we can look back on last week as one of those freak results that come round now and again.
Look at Newcastle hammering Aston Villa 6-0, then Villa went out and won their next game. Everyone can move on.
It’s good to see Flynny back in the building after his operation. Rammers is also seeing light at the end of the tunnel, so it won’t be too long before we get those two big personalities back in the squad.
Leon Osborne, too, has returned to training, so he will give the gaffer more options before long.
