New Bradford City loan striker could be in by this week

Peter Taylor is homing in on another striker who can offer City something “different”.

With injuries causing a concern, Taylor wants to bolster resources up front ahead of the big kick-off at Shrewsbury on August 7.

He decided against offering a contract to Southport’s Chris Simm after the Essex tour and is pushing to bring in someone else on loan – a deal that could go through this week.

Taylor said: “I still think we can do with another different forward. You’re always looking to improve in that area and hopefully I’m getting a bit closer on that one.”

Taylor has also spoken to the board about signing right back Lewis Hunt, who played in the four friendlies on tour.

The former Wycombe defender would seem a natural back-up for Simon Ramsden if City can persuade him to move north.

“We are still trying on that one,” added Taylor. “If I’m honest, getting in a right back and another forward are the two main areas that would help us.”

Meanwhile, David Syers has been given longer to impress City after his injury against Canvey Island a week ago. The former Farsley and Harrogate midfielder’s tour was cut short when he damaged his ankle, forcing him to miss the final games against Ashford and Chelmsford.

But Taylor insisted that Syers remains in his thoughts and will be given the time to prove himself.

He added: “David is having treatment at the moment but he’s still with us. We’re still looking at him and he’s shown some good things.

“I think he will have a chance of training again next week.”

the new squad system in the premiership indicates some reasonably equipped players may not make the squad due to the need to have "local players":does this open any doors: the likes of Cleverley and Wellbeck may not be seeing any first team football this season?

Can we do any deals with premiership teams for loanees on the basis they are kept fit and playing whilst contracted wages are being met by the parent club.

It would be great to think that this could be done or is this one step too far at present?

Maybe a long shot Tyker but can see your logic with the new rule....
But if anyone can Taylor can, to send a youngster to be coached by Taylor all season can only be good for them can't it?

I think Cleverley or Wellbeck would be miles out of our league to be honest, they've both gone on the tour of USA so I would think Sir Alex sees them as fringe players. Both went out on loan to championship clubs last season so I would expect them to be at least at that level if not bottom half premier league if they were to go out on loan.

Players who are 21 and under aren't subject to the squad limit... the point being to force clubs to use youth players in case of injury rather than just stockpiling senior players.

So, if anything, there's less chance of youth players filtering down the leagues.

tbh though, this will probably only affect the Championship as players of that calibre don't get loaned out any lower than that

100% correct BIG T...a Championship side could attract players of that calibre but not a side playing in the 4th division....

it was a thought for discussion.

according to the rules it appears that premiership teams have to name a 25 man squad of which 8/9 have to be "home grown players over the age of 21" Note home grown not youth !

So for instance Arsenal have only 6 home grown over 21s so will only be able to name a squad of 23 senior players and chelsea only have 4 home grown playesr so will have a squad of only21 senior players.

It does, therefore, appear that this is an encouragement for a certain number of home grown younger players to be included but those that are on the fringes and not included:what is their position going to be?

Additionally it could well be that some clubs will not be able to include some established and expensively bought players:how are they going to get first team football.

it seems to me that the new rule for the premiership may open some more doors for players to be shipped out on loan but................. there is an argument against this.

It will be interesting to see what the squads are and who is included and who is excluded with those being excluded being left in limbo?

We all look forward to this mystery signing.Of course "something different" could be someone who has not played for Peter Taylor at Wycombe and/or Stevenage.

You have to remember that the squad is just for the Premier League. Teams can still use other players for the cups or European games.

the 'home grown' players doesn't just mean anyone who is British. it's anyone who has been developed at a club in Britain for at least 3 years before they turned 21.
So Chelsea and Arsenal will have more home grown players that you think!

They need to include 8 players who have been at the club for 3 years before the age of 21.
In Man U's case, that's many of them from Giggs to many of the kids coming through right now such as Jonny Evans.
Obviously, they don't need to be over 21 to qualify as long as they've been there for 3 years.
In theory, it should give more kids a chance to break into the squads, whether they're English is another matter.
On Welbeck and Cleverley, I read recently that Ferguson said he wanted to loan them out to Premier League teams this season and there's a host of clubs interested - we wouldn't stand a chance.
It's a shame with Cleverley coming from the City Academy, along with many talented others that get poached from us, that we don't include the option to loan them back at some stage.
Anyway, it will be more likely we will loan someone from the league above us, though it's disappointing to see some of the free transfers snapped up by other league 2 teams this year such as Phil Jevons - couldn't we have brought him in?
Ryan Kendall was also released by Hull too and after a few games, he began to look bright.

the newspapers report this:

ARSENAL ONLY 6 HOME GROWN
CHELSEA ONLY 4 HOME GROWN
LIVERPOOL ONLY 5
MAN CITY OK BUT THEY WILL HAVE TO LEAVE OUT 8 SENIOR PLAYERS
SPURS OK BUT THEY WILL HAVE TO LEAVE OUT SENIOR PLAYERS

source DAILY MAIL 28 JULY

So some clubs will have senior players not able to play whilst others
will have fringe young players not in the squad but able to be used who will now be barred:these are the players who will be going out on loan.

A few days ago you were being critical of the reporting in the t&a, now you are quoting other papers as being factual. As as aleady been said, homegrown is any player that has been with the club for 3 years by the time they are 21. There will be lots of kids they can deem home grown, and they won't be all English.

WHO SAID ANYTHING ABOUT THEM HAVING TO BE BRITISH/ENGLISH?NOT ME!!! SO PLEASE DON'T HAVE A GO AT ME: Trying to pick an argument with me over something which I did not say. Apologises would be appropriate but doubtful if it is forthcoming.

CESC FABREGAS is a home grown player but Arsenal are still light on such players.

So where is the Daily Mail report inaccurate on this issue and on what basis: The t and a via it's newsdesk have made errors of fact!

The fact is that there are going to be some clubs with depleted squads and some clubs with excess players who cannot be accomodated in the squad.

I think Bellamy may be one player at risk for example and there will be loads of kids either British or not who fail to make it into the squads announced shortly.

Wow, talk about taking everything personally. Nowhere on my previous post did I 'have a go at you'. I just stated some facts about the home grown rule. There was no need for you to respond by being rude. I think you're the one who needs to be apologising.

Anyway, just something I want to clarify from the above post of your's - you said there'll be loads of kids failing to make the squads - anyone under 21 doesn't have to be named in the 25 man squad but can still be used. Not exactly going to be many 'kids' failing to make squads then! ;-)

I'm assuming this was meant for me, NOT chop1?

As for trying to pick an argument, not at all. I was merely pointing out that chop1 was right and that the top squads will have many players on their books 21+ that will be deemed home-grown. If the Daily rags are reporting differently, more fool them.

Besides, didn't the football league agree similar steps and I don't recall Taylor, taking similar action with our players! They haven't suddenly become available for loan to other clubs!

As for the false reporting in the T&A, I still insist that Taylor knew that Grant had been charged with the murder and still gave him a week-to-week contract with a view to getting him fit for this season. He even said, he would be back by the end of July, he just had a few things to sort out!! As such, Grant (whether you like it or not) was technically still a City player at the time that the T&A reported on the case. FACT!!
