Hard-as-nails midfielder Tommy Doherty will be joining City.

The 31-year-old former Northern Ireland international has agreed a two-year deal and becomes Peter Taylor's fourth capture in the space of 24 hours.

Doherty played under Taylor at Wycombe and was pivotal in their promotion two seasons ago. He has twice been named in the League Two team of the season.

Doherty, who has also played for Bristol City and QPR, left Wycombe in January after a row with boss Gary Waddock.

He spent the second half of last season playing in Hungary with Ferencvaros.

Taylor said: "He's a top footballer. Tommy can really pass a ball, that's a cert."

Heard nothing but good about this guy, looks like a quality signing, this would suggest that Boulder is coming back. Add a striker or 2 to those signed and we could ne there.

Come on City !

If this is who I think it is I am over the moon....
Can recall a hard midfielder who was a class act at Valley Parade and we left calling him Gatusso....I hope this is him, not too many people come to VP who look like Gatusso, it must be him :-)
Jacko I am also getting optimistic too, like dejavu!
Quick question, does this mean Flynny isn't staying or them two together with one other in a 451/433?

Tyker, are you being an hypocrite again? Only on wednesday, you made it perfectly clear how you felt about 30+ year old players and now you believe this player turns us into promotion contenders. Is it safe to assume you were just ranting for the sake of it, only i have shot down your arguments on why we shouldnt sign ex-town players espec ones aged 30 or more. Clarity needed

Great signing, this guy looked a class above when we played Wycombe at home a couple of seasons ago.

If this is a sign of the calibre of player we are looking to bring in, then we've got to be aiming for top 3.

Looks like it's going to be a 4-3-3 to me, and I'm certainly looking forward to seeing a Doherty-Flynn midfield partnership, which arguably should be the most creative in the Division.

Fresh in my memory are the McLaren, Lee etc signings by McCall in pre season a couple of years ago and the uncontrolled hype that followed.

In conclusion, I do agree things are looking up bit I'm far too experienced in life to get carried away

Dead right.
The difference is that McCall had large playing budget and players came for money. PT has a smaller budget, yet has signed players of easily the same calibre if not better who are here because they want to play here and play for PT. That would seem to spell commitment to the cause which couldn't be said for McLaren et al who disappeared when the game didn't go their way. I for one am much more optimistic and with good cause I think.

mmmmmmmmmmmmm: and you are a perfect example of hypocracy and hyperbole.

This player is a class act and Taylor knows him well and his ability and road worthiness.

Two year deals for players do look odd though when Taylor has only committed to one year.

Carry on shooting my old mate:waste your time as much as you want it will have no effect

You still haven't addressed the issue though Tyker. I will repeat my point for you to defend (if you can)!

tyker, midland road says...
10:12am Wed 26 May 10 - another ex Town player (Jevons) who was loaned out to Morecambe but who then did not play too much late on for them. No way should we sign him or any other Town reject. Taylor will be looking for younger more able and more willing to learn and adapt.

Waynus71, BD6 says...
11:37am Wed 26 May 10 (RESPONSE) - Too right Tyker, better rip up that contract offer for Flynn whilst we're at it eh???? Just because these players are ex-Town, doesn't mean we shouldn't consider them. For the record, Jevons scored 19 times in 40 games for Morecambe last season and, albeit his age is aginst him, he clearly still has goalscoring in his locker! Hanson could do with some experience beside him - why not Jevons?? Finally, you say he "was loaned out to Morecambe but who then did not play too much late on for them". Whilst this is true, it wasn't anything to do with his ability. He was injured in a training ground accident on 16 April. I'm sure he would have hit the 20 goals mark had it not been for that injury!!"

Tyker, midland road says...
1:52pm Wed 26 May 10 - And i really cannot see Taylor wanting to or being allowed to sign a player who is 31 ish now. Why do we want an old player like this? THAT IS WHY NOT? Taylor knows that there is no long term gain in signing older players, perhaps he knows that they are more prone to injury and that those injuries will take more time to heal.

Waynus71, BD6 says...
12:47am Fri 28 May 10 (RESPONSE) - I repeat my statement to you the other day. Phil Jevons scored 19 goals in 40 games this season. He is 30 years old, but should that alone rule him out of being a target? Remember Windass (in his 2nd spell) or perhaps the great Bobby Campbell, who used his enormous experience to bring on his team-mates? AGE DOES HAVE SOME ADVANTAGES!

tyker, midland road says...
7:52am Thu 27 May 10 (IN RESPONSE TO STORY IN FLYNN) - yes: a good signing

Waynus71, BD6 says...
12:48pm Thu 27 May 10 (RESPONSE) - "yes: a good signing", but according to you Tyker, we shouldn't sign ANY of Huddersfield's cast-offs!! Are you saying this particular signing (albeit from Huddersfield and 30yrs old this year), was a good signing? Come on, if you are going to have an argument, at least make it consistent!

tyker, midland road says...
7:53pm Fri 28 May 10 - Another player Taylor knows well making it easier to get him playing in a squad which by the day is looking more like a promotion squad than a play off team.

So, Tyker to clarify, you said we should never sign a Town reject again, but then praised the signing of Michael Flynn.

You also said that we should never (and that Taylor would not be allowed to) sign players around the 30 years old mark, but then praised the signing of Doherty.

Clarification needed!!!!!
