Lawn: Taylor contract talks will take time

City are ready to step up contract talks with Peter Taylor.

The manager’s short-term deal runs until the end of May and fans have been calling for the club to pin him down for next season.

Taylor admitted he has “got the bug” at Valley Parade and has been busy rebuilding the squad with six new signings.

But joint-chairman Mark Lawn stressed that plenty will have to be agreed to secure the boss for the long-term.

A contract is more than just what wages we are going to pay Peter

Mark Lawn

He said: “I think we will be talking to Peter very soon and seeing what he wants.

“But I need to make it clear that a contract is more than just what wages we are going to pay Peter.

“He’s going to want a budget and to make sure we can fulfil his requirements. We’ve got to wait to sit down and talk to him about that and see where we go from there.

“Talks have started about player budgets, not about his wages.

“He’s coming back to us with what he thinks would be a realistic figure to help us get promotion.

“Peter’s got it in his own mind who he’d like to keep and who he would let go.”

Lawn has been impressed with City’s progress since the former England under-21 coach took the helm. They have won four of the last six games.

“There is a definite improvement in the team in general both on an off the pitch, which is quite impressive. He’s doing a very good job.

“Peter has got us well organised and defending well. That always gives you a chance.

“Once you stop the goals going in, it gives you something to build on.

“He’s got immense contacts within the game. People know Peter and are willing to help him.

“I don’t think we can knock any of the players he’s brought in. They certainly seem to have improved the side wherever they’ve slotted into.

“All parties need to be happy with what’s happening. From our point of view we’re very happy with what Peter is doing.”

I would be delighted if the club could tie Peter Taylor down to a longer contract. The board have done really well to attract him in the first place and must do everything they can to keep him beyond the season end.
Lets hope the deal is done sooner rather than later and the club can settle down and look towards the future.
I am sure a good end to the season would help season ticket sales and give the manager a few extra quid to strengthen for next season.
Fingers crossed from me.

I agree that with the way progress is being made it could be good for ticket sales for next season and of course increased revenue for the club. We had a team unable to draw people in now we have a manager who can do exactly that.

I must say I find this very difficult to comprehend. Surely the "budget" is set by the directors - not by the manager. Presumably Lawn is saying that if Taylor wants say £1m to build a team capable of promotion then he can forget it. (Ignoring the fact that you need to speculate to accumulate or in our case don't speculate if you want to go from Premiership to L2 obscurity in 10 years). What if Taylor turns down the budget ?? Do we take the first person to say he can do the job for next to nowt ??

As I remember a year ago fans were praising players and manager for taking pay cuts and (surprise, surprise) that policy meant that the 3 that took these big cuts (McCall, Thorne and Boulding) all had extremely non productive final months at the club.

as ever a sensible and correct post: we need to be sure:he needs to be sure. we should stretch that extra yard/mile to land him as I believe we are now, at last, on an upward path for the first time sine Jewell was appointed. It will require hard work but he has done it before and he can do it again this tine from a solvent club not one which was all but out of existence.

get him signed up: get the season tickets offerred again and go for it.

bwwb, I can't understand what you are finding hard to comprehend.
This isnt about Taylor dictating to the board its is about both parties agreeing what is what to ensure they can agree on a contract.
The board are visibly interested in Taylor, both the club and Taylor would want promotion.
So the board need to know what Taylor's expectations would be for his salary and his budget.
If they are far from what we can afford then the board would have decide if they are going to try finance what he wants or move on to someone else.
I personally like most want Taylor but if what he believes he would need could have adverse impact on the club if we dont get promoted, then the chairmen/board have got to make a decision if the gamble is worth it.
Lawn is just trying to make it clear to fans like yourself its not as simple as right we will give you a basic salary of 3k a week and Taylor saying okay and shaking hands.

What budget do you want Peter?
What salary are you looking for?

Is he not already on a contract, albeit short term and he must already be aware that we don't have millions to spend?

Surely it's just a case of, same contract, extended term and we can afford £x on wages, sign as many quality players as possible and bring as many in on loan as you can.

Taylor's got the contacts and we've got the pull of the big club little league - he's managed to bring in good players to the likes of Wycombe who have little potential, so he'll have no worries bringing them to Bradford, unlike at the end of last season when you think of the likes of Adam Le Fondre and Nicky Law available on a free yet we couldn't or didn't try to bring them to VP, Taylor won't miss them this time around.

Hopefully, he also gets a say in the youth team, that way, we won't allow £20m worth of talent go for a few grand and as he is an ex England U21 coach, the youngsters will no doubt want to stay and he can bring them through the ranks as he did with the likes of Dawson and Turner from Hull.

How good would we be now with the likes of Fabian Delph?

Mr. Lawn owned an employment firm, so surely negotiating a contract and swiftly should be a walk in the park.

I'm obviously no football chairman, though I wouldn't be alone where BCFC are concerned but it seems straightforward to me.

As well as extending PT's contract, we should also be looking to extend the likes of James Hanson as he will have only one year left - hopefully we have learned our many lessons from the likes of Damion Stewart, Paul Henderson being snapped away for nowt after their contracts ended.

I'm sure a big part of the discussions will include loan signings. Taylor seems to have more contacts, so the policy may be to get more loan signings because many of them may not cost us a penny in wages and therefore release more money for permanent signings.
