Contract talks not top of Sykes’ agenda

Paul Sykes has put any thoughts of a new deal on hold to concentrate on aiding the Bulls’ charge up the Super League table.

Bottom after their first two games, Bradford have won three of their last four to sit eighth ahead of tonight’s visit to Hull FC (8pm).

But last week’s 33-8 defeat at Warrington made it clear there is still plenty of room for improvement, meaning off-field matters have taken a back seat.

Sykes signed a one-year deal midway through last season, taking him through until the end of this year, and understands he still needs to prove his worth if his stay is to be extended.

He said: “We’ve not started talks yet. It’s not even in my mind at the moment, I just want to play rugby and concentrate on winning games and improving my own performance.

“I’ve had a good few years here but I’ve just got to wait and see.

“I think I’ve been doing pretty well so far. I worked on a few things in the off-season, a bit of fitness and a couple of other areas and it seems to be paying off.”

Sykes scored one of his side’s two tries at Warring-ton, taking him ever closer to a career milestone.

The 28-year-old utlity back now needs only 21 points to bring up 1,000 for his career but credits his team-mates for their own part in him reaching individual goals.

“It’s a nice milestone for myself but that comes later,” said Sykes.

“I just have to focus on this weekend and the following weeks to come.

“It’s always good to get over the line, especially as I didn’t score for the first couple of games.

“When we all work together it’s easy because we all have set goals.

“We get a lot of opportunities in this team because we’ve got a lot of skilful players, so I just hope I can get a few more tries!”

Tonight’s trip to fifth-placed Hull signals the end of a testing three-week spell.

The past two weeks have yielded two points against Super League’s current top two and Sykes knows victory at the KC Stadium would set a strong platform for the Bulls, especially with the congested Easter period just around the corner.

He said: “The Easter period is coming up soon.

“If we can string a couple more wins together, when it starts getting drier, the sun’s out a bit more and we can start throwing the ball about a bit, then it’s going to change again.

“A couple of wins would set us a good platform, then we get three games over Easter which are all winnable games and we’ll be able to see where we’re at after Easter.”

I can't see Macca having his contract extended so who will decide if players stay on or not?

Good point. It will be interesting to see what happens in the next three months. Not only with Sykes but Macca himself. The ausies start declaring where they are going half way through the season so Hood may be looking now - or he may have decided that Macca can do another two years. I would think Hood has already made up his mind after three and a half years of unmotivated inconsistency.

I do feel the Bulls look a better unit this year "BUT" Areas that need looking at, wingers, centres, worrincy, and obviously Macca.

Lets be real honest here guys, how many of us expected the bulls to be really challenging at the top of SL this year??? yes we have signed some good players ( better than the dross we signed last year ). we all know the areas of the team which need improving now which is our outside backs, you cannot expect the bulls to be able to buy and build a full team in the off season.
we have been crying out for new half backs for the past 2/3 years we now have them. our time will come when we get some better outside backs and that for me should be the area macca n co should be looking to improve for next season. until then we have to run with what we have got, no good posting on here day after day we need new outside backs becos it isnt going to happen until next season. we need to get behind who we have and support and hope these players raise there game to the level we need and expect.
3 from 3 is an improvement from last year and we have played against the so called better teams this year so far. so for me the signs are there that we nearly have a great forward pack, may be 1 or even 2 props light and another 2nd rower needed, we have 2 good half backs which on there day can take on any defensive line and create space and gaps for support players ( this is something that has been missing in our halves for couple of years ), we need at least another very good centre and winger to come on board and for me the team will be up there challenging again.

A top post BBARL6. I agree with you 100%. We have now got a decent team to support and we need to get fully behind them. There are some strong teams in Super League this year but we will win a good share of games. Realistically, around 6th position would be a step forward this season with maybe a cup run thrown in. I too think that we are laying sound foundations towards being a team that can challenge for honours in the next year or two. We are moving in the right direction so lets give credit where its due. The comeback against Wigan said it all for me.

I remember the trip home last season after the Hull game, a game we won so we should have all been full of ourselves but the feeing was very subdued because of the Dragons result.
I know it’s only been 6 games but I feel sure that is not going to happen this season, we will finish in a playoff position and this is the best chance we’ve had in 3 years to progress in the Challenge Cup competition, with full respect to the Rams.
So all I can do is look forward to what should be an interesting season and so far I haven’t wanted to miss a single game, so today I’ll get my ticket for the Rams game, even though it’s a free one and a Rhinos ticket.
COM’ON YOU BULLS.

It's still too early to assess if we're challenging or not. We're only 6 rounds in. We have 21 rounds left to go! We're not even a quarter of the way into the season. If we win 75% of the remaining fixtures, made the playoffs, wouldn't we have as much chance as the other 7 teams? It's the old cliche, Super League is a marathon not a sprint. Would we be happy with a good cup run? yes. Would we like to win the Cup? absolutely. But the League is an entirely different beast. We could go on a 10-game winning streak at the end of the season and whip the lot of them. That's the beauty of Super League...no one knows the outcome until it happens.
Wigan, Huddersfield, Warrington...they're out of the blocks and steaming ahead, does that make this season a 3 horse race? Course not, because a run of bad form and midseason when they go a bit stale, it's anyone's game. Even Quins could make a storm towards the end.

When you look back at the time Smith and Elliot arrived we had a fairly average team. It didn't happen overnight with them. The bull mania did start quickly but the team building actually took a few years. Smith had gone and Elliot was coach before we started to look contenders. This is what will probably happen again. It will be a slow process improving a few positions each year till we have about 20 top players that we are all happy with. We need to try and pick up some match winners from out of the blue as we did with Withers, Vikona, Balloo, Henderson, Hape and Les to name a few. These were unknown players or players with problems to get over and look what they did for us. This has to be the aim over the next 2-3 seasons as the days of getting our cheque book out are gone. It will happen. Leeds will start to lose players through salary cap or age in the next few years. We just need patience and keep backing who we already have. Who knows, some of these players we moan about might just surprise us in the future and even save us a few bob.

Mostly good points above I believe. I would agree the Bulls are looking as though they are heading in the right direction. It's up to supporters to back what we've got and hope the problems with the outside backs gets solved next season. King and Atkins showed exactly the quality of Sykes and Sherrife. Not good!!

Haitch agree with some of your comments but the one about king and atkins showing the quality of skyes and sherrife i dont agree with.
Ok they may not be as good but there were reasons behind why king / atkins and others like morley etc were making so many yards causing the bulls to make the wires players look better than they really are.
if you drop ball coming out of your own red zone area/own half and give the ball over to a team like warrington without getting over the half way line time and time again then they are going to punish you. any team in SL wud punish you. you cannot afford to defend defend and defend set after set as this takes the juice out of the tank hence why in the last 20mins the bulls looked out on thier feet, thier mind set would change, how wud you feel if you had just defended a set of six then after tackle 2 your team drops the ball causing you to do anothe set of 6 tackles??? cannot afford to defend back to back sets of 6 and lets be honest thats what the bulls had to do for 30 mins of the 2nd half.
If your blowing out of your arse your body doesnt react as quick as it should, i know these are professional athletes but if the tank is more than half empty then it doesnt work as effective as a player with his tank full. the wires didnt have to complete a set of 6 tackles cos the bulls never hardly got to the last tackle due to silly mistakes.
Sort the mistakes out going forward put other teams under pressure like the wires did to the bulls, am sure the likes of sykes, nero and sheriffe wud look beta players.
