Dumb rugby has left us winded – Godwin

The Bulls intend to become their own worst critics in a bid to stop being their own worst enemies.

Any positives from defeat at Warrington were initially swept to one side as the players underwent a harsh examination of their own failings.

Having put themselves in a position to win at The Halliwell Jones Stadium, Bradford threw it all away, giving up an 8-6 half-time lead to lose 33-8 thanks to a late flurry of tries.

It was a game surrendered rather than lost and Wayne Godwin warned that has to stop.

It feels like we’ve had the wind knocked out of us

Wayne Godwin

“We were getting on a roll and were completing,” said Godwin.

“It was just unforced errors in the second half. The balls were there to be caught but we made it hard for ourselves, we didn’t get in the arm-wrestle and we let them back in the game.

“We did a lot of dumb stuff and it’s hit us hard.

“In the first half we made some chances. We didn’t have many good ball sets but every time we got down there we caused problems.

“In the second half we started well and then just went off the boil and you can’t afford to do that.

“It feels like we’ve had the wind knocked out of us.

“We were going into the game full of confidence and thought it would be a lot closer than it turned out.

“We’re not happy with the way we conceded all those late tries. It’s not good enough and it doesn’t meet the standards we’ve set this year.

“We need to be hard on ourselves if we want to do anything this year and go places.

“We’re a quality side but we didn’t show that in the second half.

“We showed glimpses in the first half but we did too much defending all game and had limited opportunities in attack. We were very dumb with the ball and we invited pressure.”

Friday’s opponents Hull FC are in a similar position.

They too were beaten heavily by a top-two side, losing 48-24 at Wigan, and Godwin expects a backlash from his former club.

He said: “I’m sure we’re going to get a lot of criticism after that but we’ll bounce back.

“It’s good that we’ve got a short turnaround. We’ve got Hull away, which will be a tough contest after they got beaten in the manner they did against Wigan.

“It’s going to be a massive game.”

Were simply not good enough in the backs, King and Atkins tore us to pieces in the second half.

Why did we let Atkins go ?

After believing our fitness levels were up after the Wigan game, the team looked knackered 20 minutes from the end, walking around puffing and putting their hands on their heads.

Yes, King and Atkins tore us to bits late on, but a fitter team would be concentrating better (less mistakes), and stronger in the tackle, etc.....preventing the ball getting out to the centres and wings.

I still wonder whether the team is still not fit enough generally yet, or did the Wigan fightback take too much out of us?

On another note. Did Ganson get away with ignoring the two take-outs in the air last week?

We can't keep beating ourselves up over letting Atkins go. All teams let players go and then see them flourish somewhere else. We have picked players up from other clubs in the past that turned out to be great buys. That how it is sometimes.
One thing we are good at is talking a good game and knowing exactly what went wrong and why. I doubt I am the only one who gets a little bored with articles like this. I just want them to get on with it, the coach to coach them properly and then I will be happy to pay my hard earned cash to watch them. We all know where aor weaknesses are and who's job it is to sort them out. Only one person has the job of making them play well. That is all he is supposed to do - nothing else!

Agree Prycey. As you say, we know where weaknesses are. They aren't going to be sorted before next season, so we ought to get on with it, and regard this year as the latest in a team reconstruction.

i know its a broken record but:

*Yes our backline is distinctly average at best but has Wakefield's been that much better recently? No- but theiir coach's ability to get them to punch above their ability level is far superior to macca's- people say on here that coach's dont drop balls- no they dont but they instill belief and an aura of ability*

*Worrincy- if you played like that in National Conference or missed so many tackles in the Pennine league you would be subbed and that would be the end of it*

*Mourinho has a clause in his contract at Inter that he can leave- bring him in he doesnt need RL experience just belief (wink wink)

*Sadly, although we will make the top 8 i think its due to the demise of harlequins, cas and catalans to b honest- just no ability to strike from deep against likes of leeds, Saints and Wire- we NEED penalties to get us close first*

*Finally- its still better than winning easy every week- bring back Cordle and Dave Watson ha ha- is he still in exile??!!!!!*

Fitness wasn't an issue for the two quick fire tries, Worrincy had just come on and should have been fresh as a daisy, but he almost stepped aside to let the attacking team through!

It's not fitness as much as laziness and lack of commitment from some players.

Even though we looked a bit more tired, we had to defend a lot in the first half due to the severe incompetence of Ganson and the touch-cronies!

We all feel frustrated but the fact is Macca is not in a position to drop Worrincy at the moment. We are paying him wages & at this moment in time Macca is playing him as a sub which is his only option. This year we have bought good quality signings at a cost in previous recent years weve had too many fringe players & no quality. He will be dropped asap as without doubt he was the loose cog that broke the engine on Saturday.Things are going ok all clubs are in the same with inconsistancies in form both Huddersfield and Warrington are playing well but their form will dip. Keep smiling.

B-I I don't want to split hairs, but I would suggest that there were other events leading up to Worrincy stepping aside (God he's woeful).

I thought that from the touchline, one could see some of the players (including the committed)start to wilt. It was almost as if the exertions of the Wigan game, followed by Warrington's first half pressure was a bit too much.

I know there's a lot of people talk about teams being even in SL. However, I don't subscribe to that. I think we've had a tough start to the competition, and reckon there might be a couple of "easier" (not easy) games on the horizon - except 1 April.

COYB!

I think we're all overreacting a little aren't we? OK, we've lost three times this season, but they're not exactly poor sides. Saints, Huddersfield & Warrington are excellent this season...but it won't last forever. I'd rather peak at the end of the comp than in these early stages.
Also, the backline isn't as poor as people are making out. Sheriffe & Sykes have improved a lot and Reardon is a good finisher he just needs more space and more ball. It's simple facts, we're missing a platform for the halves once Lynch & Scruton go off. Hall isn't a prop and Kopczak isn't providing enough impact. We're a prop light off the bench. It's nothing to do with the backline, if the halves don't get the space, the backline can't do anything.
As for Worrincy, with a fit squad, I'll be shocked to see him pull on a jersey until there are some harsh words about his commitment.
All this aside, lets not blow it out of proportion, we're in a better position than we were last season, the reigning Champions are in the same boat and we could be a hell of a lot worse off (look at Catalan, Quins, Salford!)

I think that was my point Adey - obviously not very well made.

Just face it. We're an average team built and coached by an average manager.

let's be honest. We were one man short in the pack(langley) then we get warrincy coming off the bench to stand and spectate whilst warrington score. That was the big turnround in the game. heads went down and the floodgates opened.
Langley was badly missed both in attack and defence. but the team cannot just collapse because we have one man missing.
I've been all in favour of giving macca a fair chance to sort the team out, but if he can't see worrincy is not part of this team ,then i'm afraid it's time for him to go.
A big improvement needed at hull this week,or we will be on the wrong end of another hiding.

We don’t just have one man missing we have Reardon missing as well, week after week he’s taken out of the game by one man’s greed.
It’s time someone told Nero that the centre and winger play as a team.
COM’ON YOU BULLS.
