Menzies: I may to decide to stick around as a coach

Steve Menzies would be happy to continue his English adventure beyond the current campaign – even if his future lies off the pitch.

Despite being Super League’s oldest player at 36, the advancing years have yet to take their toll and Menzies has still not ruled out a prolonged playing career.

This season was supposed to be his last but his body is refusing to conform to expectations.

The family really loves it over here so we need to look at all aspects and make a decision based on the body and other considerations

“I probably feel better this time than I did last year,” said Menzies. “I had a bit of a niggle last year so it made it harder.

“I’ve just been maintaining it and I feel really good. Age is just a number at this stage.

“I’m really enjoying it so we’ll see how I’m going in two months and see what the club wants to do because they’re only allowed so many overseas players, so we’ll see what they’re looking at.”

And asked if an off-field role would prove equally tempting, he said: “Yeah, maybe,” prompting speculation that Menzies could stay on at Odsal in a coaching capacity.

He added: “The family really loves it over here so we need to look at all aspects and make a decision based on the body and other considerations.

“I always thought I’d enjoy it over here but I’ve really, really enjoyed it! If someone said ‘you can stay for the next 30 years’, I’m not sure I’d want to do that but we do really enjoy it. Everything about it has been great.

“I love my darts too and I’m scared of going home because I don’t know whether they get the Premier League darts on the TV back home. I’d be filthy if I couldn’t get it.”

Menzies is not the only Bradford player in positive mood.

Confidence has soared following last week’s 22-20 win against league leaders Wigan, the Bulls’ revival from 20-0 down reinforcing team unity both on and off the pitch.

“Wigan are probably the in-form team so far in Super League, so to not let any tries in during the second half and come back the way we did shows a bit of a mental game and toughness,” said the Aussie back-rower.

“I didn’t look at the scoreboard once until we scored the second-to-last try when I realised we were four points behind with eight minutes to go. And obviously I looked up after the last one!

“It was a really good team effort all round. Everyone did their jobs as they were supposed to do them and we did the little things right.

“When everyone works together it pays off.”

Beaver would be superb to have on coaching team, his experience and legendry status to new and young players would be outstanding.
Pretty sure his game plans and training methods would be greatly received as only have to look how fit he is for proof!

Get him signed up quick as assistant coach for same period as Ox signed playing contract!!!!

COYB!!!

This would be a good signing, Beaver has worked with some top coaches in aus and im sure some of their methods will have rubbed off on him.

He has looked good and always beats the first man. If he is able to carry on playing. Play. You are a long time retired.
He would also be a great recruiting agent. He knows most of the top Aussie players... NEro is out of a job this year and we need a quality hard running centre. We havent had one since Danny Peacock.

Get him in now as assistant to Macca,as already been said, must know the game inside out to maintain fitness he has. Also agree must have a mountain of knowledge to pass on to other players and to double up what a recruiting agent for the Bulls. He is such a legend in Aus.players would jump at the chance to work with him.

agreed, sign him up, not sure on the rules re coaching certs and work permits etc but if he needs em, get cracking with them, would be a great coach and as others have said his standing in the game can only prove beneficial when signing players.

hmmm all been said really. Bottom line, if Beaver wants to play for another season, I'd give him another season...just that simple.

Cynics might say has this anything to do with Macca joining Smithy in Aus at the end of the season?. I know it's been denied but I can't imagine someone just dreamt that story up. As for Beaver, it would be great to have him stay but I do hope it's in an assistants role to whoever is an experienced head coach and that the Bulls don't go down the "rookie" road as head coach again. I can imagine in a couple of years time Bulls could have a great coaching set up with Beaver and Ox at the helm. There's usually a story behind rumours like this though as it's not the sort of thing a player would normally reveal at this stage of the season.

Good news. I would sign him up now and start him on his coaching badges. He will want to go back home one day and coach but we could get a few good years out of him first. I was discussing this after the match at the weekend and a group of us also stated that we think Orford will make a terrific coach one day on the lines of Ricky Stuart. If I were the chairman I would be thinking this even in these early days. Haitch is right about using rookie coaches which is why I would get Menzies on the coaching staff next year even if he continues playing and then orford in his last year of his contract. If we want a top ausie centre next year Menzies will need to retire. If he doesn't - and I hope he does carry on as long as possible, we will need to work with our youngsters or find a British player.
I have stated on here a few times my desire for a change in coach but if we do reasonably well this year with more youngsters breaking through next year such as the Burgess twins, I would be willing to give Macca two more years with Menzies helping him and then look at Orford & Menzies as a coaching team. My only doubt about Menzies is he is such a gentleman and quiet person. Orford appears to be a determined and strong character who will lay down the rules and say what he expects. They could make a great team. Could we have all three working together if Macca does OK this year. I have to give credit to Macca regarding the young lads that are ready to break into the team. We do have a group of possible internationals and he deserves credit. I am not sure Menzies is ready to be head coach next year without serving an apprenticeship. Could he serve it with Macca? Whatever happens, it is good news that Menzies would like to stay.

I think anything Beaver says is worth far more than anything either Macca,Hood or the pundits have to say. And it goes without saying I would like Beaver to be involved within the Bulls as long as possible.
There's usualy a synic who enjoys little else than to argue against the above positive posts, so I will play devil's advocate. What follows does not realy mirror my personal views/thoughts but merely voiced to encourage reaction of ideas.

What do we realy know of late, (or think we know)?
Ans; 1 : Macca to go to Aus in 2011
2 : Chris Caisley exspressing a keen interest in returning. Both he and Hood waiting upon the news regards the OSV.
3 : Noble not yet signed his Crusaders contract.
4 : Beaver exspressing his wish to carry on playing beyond 2010 if body allows and may enter talks in that vain in as little as two or three months time.
Also, (from another site)already undertaking Coaching studies towards gaining certification.
No plans as yet to return to OZ.

Putting them all in the same mix doesn't look great IMO.
I can only speculate that Beaver would stay, only if Caisley and God forbid he should return, Noble stayed well out of the picture.
Another words; Macca stayed with Hood in overall control.
Otherwise I could only imagine some other U.K. club benefitting from Beavers future here in a coaching/recruitment capacity.

noble did a good job at odsal, but those days are gone.
he has since been 3 years at wigan with presumably as much money as he needed to team build. What did he achieve? nothing!
Love to see beaver join coaching staff at bulls, but when he finishes playing. Beaver is such a big name in Aus' i'm sure he will know who to sign and who not to. He will also have the greatest respect from players, old and young at odsal.
Last week we were talking about legends, dont think anyone wiil dispute this guy's a legend here and in Aus'.

Steve Menzies shows he has still got the Midas touch as he prepares to offload to the supporting Rikki Sheriffe for a brilliant try Steve Menzies could well end up playing for the Bulls in Super League XVI or, failing that, find himself putting the players through their paces at training
