Taylor dwells on positives after defeat

City striker Mark McCammon’s attempt to turn on a sixpence and fire home from close range ended with him shooting narrowly wide City striker Mark McCammon’s attempt to turn on a sixpence and fire home from close range ended with him shooting narrowly wide

Peter Taylor believes City are heading the right way despite last night’s setback at Aldershot.

The two-match winning run was ended with a 1-0 loss at the Recreation Ground. Defender Anthony Charles notched the only goal before Lee Bullock missed a great chance to equalise deep into stoppage time.

But Taylor, who is looking for another loan addition ahead of Saturday’s clash with Rotherham, saw more reasons for optimism.

He said: “Of course it’s disappointing after the last couple of results. You’d love to win every match and go on fantastic runs but we have got to be realistic on that.

“There were still good things – and some poor ones as well – and overall I feel we are still getting slightly better.

“We can improve in certain areas. Aldershot had a bit more patience on the ball and I felt we were looking for longer passes and ‘worldy’ balls.

Peter Taylor

“That’s probably down to confidence and the players that we’ve got here.

“We can play better but we still probably created as many chances as the opposition, if not more. We looked very strong on set-pieces and our corners were good.”

But Taylor was unhappy with the 54th-minute goal as City half-cleared a corner and then left centre half Charles unmarked when the ball came back into the penalty area.

Striker Gavin Grant made his first appearance from the bench and produced a couple of lively runs.

Taylor added: “He’s lively and decent, although he’s not ready for a full game yet.

“Gavin got a bit of a whack on his ankle at the end but hopefully it’s not too bad.

“Mark McCammon also had four stitches in his head but he’ll be okay.”

defensively a lot lot better with two banks of four for most of the game:the goal came when Clarke was slow coming out and played the guy onside and he beat Glennon easily.

MCCammon looked two yards short on pace and does not win enough in the air for a big man and i really do not see him with a future at City:the introduction of Grant leaving Thorne and Boulding on the bench appears an odd decision and one wonders if PT sees no future in either of these two.

Daley sadly for me showed his absolute disregard for city by spending around 5 mInutes at half tine chatting to his mates in the stand whilst the others warmed up. a fact apparently missed by management!! Is Daley that good and so fit that he does not have to get involved in that team activity? he came on and had little impact often losing the ball instead of passing:he did have one shot which went narrowly wide with the keeper beaten, however, his attitude stinks and he was lucky to stay on the field after a kick out at a defender which left him injured on the left side of the field. Bullock was clean through on a bouncing ball which he smashed high over teh bar with only second remaining when it was easier to score.

all in all there are improvements from keeper though the back four. OB looked a bit lost and played too narrow. Evans and Hanson put in good shifts without threatening. Bullock was strong in breaking up play and playing some nice passes out but Flynn looked out of sorts.

All in all, a very disappointing game but a game at which City fans were recorded as having around 10% of the actual gate and that figure did not include many who had bought tickets for the stands and were unrecorded as City fans.

We need a creative midfield duo and maybe a wide right player as Ramsden hardly got over the half way line except for the corner he took from the left side: a journey of over 100 yards there and back just to to take a corner!!

Conclusion-- work in progress coming along nicely

It does appear that Thorne and Boulding are being marginalised in favour of a big front two. If that's the case then yes we probably are looking for the traditional creative midfielder rather than the holders that we currently have. Daley never has been the answer. Think PT will big him up and sell him on at the end of this season. Rotherham will be wary of this team having been stuffed by Rochdale last night. Let's hope McCammon sticks a hat-trick on them - right under Moore's nose.

not sue that MCcammon will be playing: certainly nothing in his performance last night suggested that he is a long term answer to our scoring problems.

Tyker my answer to your question above re Thorne and Boulding. I mentioned last week along with Brandon they will have no future under Taylor for 2 reasons.
1) he clearly likes his teams be solid and break with pace and power, they have neither.
2) there is better value out there then their appearance fee will be.
I said last week I think Thorne will retire very very soon as his basic will hardly be worth hanging around for, after the inclusion of Grant from the ench last night I think I could now predict the same for Boulding.
Then after speaking to a friend I dont think they will well there is a slight chance of playing at wembley, but if that chance dissapears they will be off I think , especially Thorne.

I felt the introduction of grant was a mistake:he has not played now for nearly a year and actually contributed nothing. i felt though that that introduction was very symbolic and effectively said to both Boulding and Thorne that you do not feature in my current thinking for this season and ,therefore, there is no possibility for next season.

PT will probably say they are an option but last night it needed some craft up front and I personally thought that the introduction of Daley and Grant served no useful purpose.

the Aldershot fans around us were saying how much they liked Williams and, wait for it, clarke!! FUNNY OLD GAME IS IT NOT?

Aldershot local radio also spoke highly of them. The best defences are not made up of the best players, but the best partnerships and most organised. Williams and Clarke sound like they are forming a solid partnership. This is what Taylor is going to tunr us into. Well organised, and very hard to beat. For this reason I dont think this spells the end of Thorne as we need him to snaffle up the half chances. No longer will we need to score two to win. Functional football beckons, not that this is a bad thing

Actually, whilst I have been a detractor in the past, Clarke is not a bad player, it's just that he's horrifyingly inconsistent and his distribution isn't great, but that can be coached. He's had a couple of absolute howlers this season (starting at Notts County),
but he's not shy at getting stuck in. Maybe PT is able to get the best out of him - something that SM wasn't able to. Williams' naivety comes from his inexperience, but with a wise old owl at the helm he's sure to come good as he's plainly got talent (which SM was deft enough to spot). Rehman is clearly in the departure lounge...

we desperately needed someone to snaffle a couple of half chances last night especially the last second howler from Bullock but he was not considered with Grant being ahead of him: STRANGE

Indeed Bantam Blue; very sad for his family and friends. However, if I get a choice of how I go it will be just after a football match (although it will be long after I'm 53 years old). CTID in 50 years time!!

At this point in time neither: Brandon's done nothing and will not play again as the club do not want to trigger a new contract for next season. Daley will be with us next season whether we like it or not unless he can be persuaded to leave or someone comes in with a few quid to take him off us.

I do not think Taylor rates him too highly and will not have been too pleased to learn of him wasting so much time at half time chatting to his mates in the crowd rather than warming up.

Kicking a ball about at half-time interval is NOT warming up. My criticism of a lot of Managers is that they don't have the subs -other than the sub keeper- involved in the half-time discussions about tactics and the rights and wrongs of how the Team has been playing and what is expected in the second half etc. If Daley was chosen to go on immediately at the start of the second half, then yes, he should THEN have been 'warming up'.

Lonnie, we don't often see eye-to-eye, but I agree 100% with your post above.

I too have often queried why outfield players aren't involved in the half-time team talks and why we waste their time kicking aimless balls to each other. Surely it would be better to stay in the changing rooms with the others and try to help build team spirit. And, as you say, if the player was told he was coming on for the start of the 2nd half, after receiving his instructions, he can go out and do a proper warm up.

Spot on.
