We can't afford any Giant mistakes, warns Lynch

Andy Lynch has warned his team-mates they can afford no slip-ups when they kick off Super League XV at Huddersfield Giants on Friday.

After finishing third last season, the Giants have only strengthened during the winter, making them an even more imposing threat for the new campaign.

But Bulls skipper Lynch believes a stern test first up is just what Bradford need – as long as they learn their lessons from last week’s 18-16 win at Hull KR.

The Bulls triumphed in their final pre-season trial at Craven Park, but only just.

After conceding a last-gasp try, they enjoyed a significant slice of luck when the usually-reliable Michael Dobson missed a kick that would have tied the game.

Lynch knows Huddersfield won’t be quite so generous come Friday. He said: “You’ve got to be on your game, you can’t afford to slip up. In the last two minutes at Hull KR we were setting up for a drop goal and then dropped that ball.

“They went down the other end of the field and ended up scoring. If they’d kicked the goal they would’ve won the game.

“I don’t think that would’ve been a fair reflection because we did a lot of things well.

“But still, we did do a lot of poor things and if we can put the wrongs right for this week, it’s going to be an exciting game.”

Bradford’s trip to the Galpharm Stadium is the kind of clash Lynch relishes.

An honest prop who is among the toughest in Super League, he can’t wait to go toe-to-toe with Huddersfield’s giant pack, which includes the likes of Eorl Crabtree and new arrivals Lee Gilmour and David Fa’alogo.

Lynch said: “It’s going to be massive and we’ve got to be on our game to combat them.

“They’re a big set of forwards and they’ll be confident after finishing third last season and winning their pre-season friendly against Castleford.

"They’ll be bigger and stronger than they were last year so, as forwards, we’ve got to get on top and be dominant. That’ll go a long way to putting us in place to win the game.”

With that in mind, Lynch doesn’t expect either team to throw the ball round with abandon – especially considering the early-season weather conditions.

He said: “You’re not going to see the flamboyant stuff you’ve seen in June and July.

“You’ll probably see a bit of it but a lot of it will just be grinding out your sets, getting down to the other end of the field and keeping your team there.

“If you complete your sets and get a completion rate over 80 per cent, you’ll go a long way to getting the two points.”

Bit puzzled about the HKR game.
Presumably the score was 18-12 and the Bulls were going for a drop goal. They drop the ball HKR go down the other end and score a try and according to Andy they would have won if they had kicked the goal?
Perhaps we had not rely to much on his decisions in the lattter stages of tight matches!
Seriously though congratulations to Andy on becoming captain it is richly deserved!

Absolutely right Captain! We can't afford to slip up on the first game of the season. In fact, can anyone remember the last time we actually WON the opening round of SL? We're going up against the best defence of 2009, what better way to test yourself?

he didn't say they would have won the game, he said we wouldn't have won. but you are right it shouldn't have been down to that. it was shocking defence right at the very end. think they were all just waiting for the whistle to blow.
langley needs to stop conceding penalties for holding down, he gave away loads at rovers, but did look strong in the tackles.

He said" If they'd kicked the goal they would 've won the game"
Seems quite clear to me!

Read it again cj old mate!! with yer glasses ON this time. Ha Ha!

It's going to be very difficult. It would indeed be amazing if Bulls could get anything from the game. Giants would be my tip to break into the top two this season but I agree with Lynchy it's better to get a tough one first up if the Bulls are looking to start well and get up to speed.

can't get much tougher, to start, giants, saints, there will be no love lost even though its valentines day. seems as if lynch is going to be alright with the armband, plus he'll get the help and input from langers, beaver and ox. but its one hell of a learning curve, he may make a few mistakes along the way, but who doesn't. just hope it the responsibility won't interfer with his game.

as to the length of posts, whats wrong with informing fellow supporters of what you know or find on the inernet. bye the way has anyone entered a dream team on the sl site. eh smfts, will have you a bet i finish higher than you so enter a team, mate you too haitch, adey spanglish et al.

Agree with our new captain. If we don't beat the Giants, then we wont beat the Saints, Wigan or Warrington. So that will leave the Bulls with 2 wins out of 6, the sort of results we all witnessed last year. I only hope Macca and his new aussie players have the game plan to see the Bulls get the 2 points this friday COYB.

Don't quite follow that logic. "If we don't beat the Giants, then we won't beat the Saints,Wigan or Warrington".
Last season we couldn't beat Celtic but beat Leeds. It doesn't follow in that sort of order.
Bulls will take 4 or 5 games to gel properly. They have a large new contingent and unlike Giants, Saints, Wigan etc., the squad has to get to know each other. It is highly possible the Bulls could loose their first 2 or three games and still be okay. Hope the fans are prepared to give them time.

I agree with the comment about it taking a few games for the team to come together. The problem is that if we do lose 3 or 4 in the first few weeks the fans will soon be calling for Macca's sacking. that is what fans do - especially on sites like this! I know that Huddersfield are a good team but I still think we should be looking to beat them if we have any ambition of finishing in the top four. If we don't have that ambition - why have I just splashed out on season tickets and new tops? Macca has a few months to stop the chairman looking for a replacement from down under. This process needs to start mid-way through the season if that is how he decides so I don't think Macca will be happy to lose the first 3 or 4 games. We can beat them and show the others we are on our way back. It will also get the crowds in at Odsal and we need that to help pay the wages of a few players.
Let's go for a win on Friday and not be content with anything else!

Well done Prycey forking out on Season ticket and new tops and I'm sure you'll get your monies worth especially compared to last season. I can honestly say it's the only thing I miss about living near Bradford, but that's my choice.Rest assured the Bulls will be wanting to win at Giants and expect a great effort from the lads.

Giants are a good side though and won't lie down. They are coached by one of the best young coaches who I am sure will soon be heading back to Aus to take up a career back home.

I agree absolutely that Macca would get some stick if they lose a couple but I don't see the Bulls producing the rubbish they did last season so I wouldn't be too worried about that.

Fans will need to be patient and it will soon become obvious just how far they have come and whether the combinations are right.

Bring it on on Friday. Glad it's all going to be shown on TV and can't wait to start shouting at the Telly COYB!!

does anyone know what the set up is for season ticket holders this year then? have they got swipey things for our cards???
no easy games this year, i just expect nothing less than 100% commitment which was sadly lacking from a few last season.

Giants may be a little bigger and stronger than last year,... but So are the BULLS!!!
I am just recalling which team it was that 'ripped apart' the defence of the previously unstoppable Giants,
back end of last season and showed other clubs how to topple 'em 8-)
