Matt Orford is confident he can become a Super League thoroughbred at Bradford.
The Bulls’ star off-season signing revealed lofty goals for the new campaign as he met his new team-mates and the media yesterday.
One of three Manly players to join the club this winter, alongside Heath L’Estrange and Glenn Hall, Orford has long harboured ambitions to play in England.
And the tough 31-year-old scrum half, labelled ‘Shetland’ by L’Estrange for his supposed resemblance to the breed of pony, hopes to have an impact far greater than his diminutive stature.
Orford said: “It was always a goal to come over and play and just to finally meet all the guys was really good.
“I’m probably a bit jet-lagged at the moment but it’s just good to get out there and get amongst it.
“I’ve always wanted to play over here. I’m glad I’m here now, I’m here for three years and I want to do something special with this group.
“It seems to be a very fast game over here so hopefully it will suit my game and the big boys up front can create some space and quick play-the-balls so I can play some attacking football.
“I’ve always wanted to play here because of the style of football compared to the NRL, they are two different games.
“It seems to be a more free-flowing game over here, a lot quicker and a lot more expansive at times.
“All that appeals to me and every time you get a new challenge, it’s always exciting. It’s a new lease of life.”
Orford had plenty of opportunities to fulfil his Super League dream before Bulls came calling.
Warrington Wolves were known to be long-term admirers of the 31-year-old former Dally M medal winner but the timing was never right - until now.
“I have had opportunities in the past but I’ve always been contracted when I’ve had offers so I didn’t really consider them that much,” said Orford.
“The timing was right and the opportunity came. It’s all happened so quick but I’m glad it did because it’s given me the opportunity to fulfil one of my goals.
“I’ve come to a good club and I think we can do some special things here.
“I looked at the roster and the coaching staff and I think they underachieved last year, they just got off to a slow start.
“I see plenty of potential in this squad and I think they can do big things, especially with the new signings.”
* The Bulls will make an announcement this week about the make-up of their backroom staff for the new season.
It is believed the departures of assistant coach Basil Richards and strength and conditioning coach Martin Clawson will both be confirmed.

He's changed the face of the squad, brought us back under the salary cap, and faced adversity from his own "loyal" supporters and still managed to stick to his guns and keep his job. Takes a stronger coach and character to ride the storm than to sit back and enjoy success. We may not have won anything since 2005 but we've got a more productive academy, we're not getting docked points for breaking the salary cap and we're not breaking any contract laws to sign players.
It certainly needs sorting out quickly as we do seem to have a much better squad this year. It would be a real shame if backroom problems affected things. I have thought for some time that Macca needs a strong number two as he does come over a little weak at times. Sometimes weak bosses choose weak deputies so they still feel they have the upper hand. The problem in sport is that there are players who are very head strong and need a firm hand to control them. If I had a say, which I clearly don't, I would go for a personality such as a Karl Harrison or someone with the experience of a Shaun McRae who would help Macca to become a better coach. That type of person - clearly not them as they are both coaching at the moment. What do we think about Medders stepping up to assistant and replacing him with a new coach with the juniors? He does seem to be doing a superb job with the juniors! Should the new assistant coach be someone who can take over from Macca if he doesn't pull things around this year? It is an important decision this week. Lets hope they get it right.

lets get back to orford, read this, Australian halfback Matt Orford can turn Bradford Bulls into Super League title contenders again, his former Manly team-mate Michael Monaghan says.
Orford joined the Bulls at training on Monday after signing a three-year contract with the side who failed to reach the Super League play-offs for the first time last season.
Monaghan played alongside Orford at Manly when they were NRL runners-up to Melbourne in 2007 and the Warrington halfback or hooker tipped the 31-year-old recruit to be a hit with Bulls fans.
"He will make Bradford into a very dangerous side," Monaghan told the Daily Express.
"They will be one of the big improvers in 2010 and Matt will be up there as one of the best halfbacks in the competition.
"Matt's kicking game is second to none, he's a great organiser and talks a lot on the field, which lifts confidence."
Orford will be reunited with old Manly team-mates Steve Menzies, Heath L'Estrange and Glenn Hall at Bradford.
"Age is not a problem because Matt takes very good care of his body," Monaghan added.
"He should have represented Australia but was unlucky to be playing in an era of exceptional scrum-halves."

I said a few weeks ago that i intended to lay of Macca having been very critical at times, and get behind him and this new squad and hopefully things will be 100% better. certainley appears to have all the right ingrediants just hope he knows what to do with them.
i totally agree that clogger should have gone the bulls have looked uncooked for a few seasons now. as for Basil why should an assistant be shot for the way the head coach is setting the team up????? as for not good enuf some of you out thereobviously dont know that Basil has been involved in the england set up??? not many current assistant coaches within SL can put that on thier CV. so we are all experts on what happens behind closed doors again are we. nobody on here knows what was said to richards or clawson so why suggest reasons for it. you only had to look at clawson to see that he was no good as a conditioner. stop the bickering and name calling and wait and see what the new lot can do.

interesting to see that after we have known for weeks about the coaching set up the bulls are eventually going to confirm it!
