Captains can give Gale the heads up

Andrew Gale will seek the advice of a number of former captains as he aims to make a success of his new job at Yorkshire.

The 26-year-old, who was yesterday unveiled as the club’s 35th skipper, will even jet out to South Africa next month to meet up with Geoff Boycott and discuss various issues about captaincy.

Gale said: “There are a few ex-players that I’d like to speak to. Dave Byas, Michael Vaughan, Brian Close, Geoff Boycott – all these sorts of people are just on the other end of a phone.

“I will be ringing them up and I will be going to meet Geoff in South Africa in the new year.

“I will sit down with him to ask him about his experiences of the Yorkshire captaincy and to pick his brains in general.”

Gale was quick to announce that he intends to be an aggressive leader of the white rose county, including the point in a prepared speech at a press conference at Headingley.

Afterwards, the Dewsbury-born left-handed batsman expanded on his point, saying: “Michael Vaughan was someone that I watched closely when he was the captain of England.

“He was quite an aggressive captain, not always doing things that the MCC coaching manual said.

“With the rule changes in the Championship, I think that you will see a number of captains on the circuit being more aggressive to get the 16 points for a win instead of the three for a draw.”

Meanwhile, Martyn Moxon says he has made good progress in his pursuit of a Twenty20 specialist overseas player for the 2010 campaign.

Yorkshire, and the other 17 counties, are permitted to sign a foreign player to purely play in 20-over cricket next summer, supplementing the capture of Australian bowler Ryan Harris as their main signing.

Moxon, the county’s director of professional cricket, has a target in mind – and last month revealed that he was aiming to secure a “high-impact batsman”.

“We’ve made good contact with someone but there are just a few work permit issues to get passed,” said the former England opening batsman.

“I’m pretty hopeful that we can make an announcement soon into the new year. It would have probably been before Christmas but for these small work permit complications.”

Queensland bowler Harris has now recovered from a cyst on his right knee and has returned to the Bulls’ Sheffield Shield side.
