Farsley's Grant bails out blunder keeper Skiba

Farsley 3 AFC Telford 1

Farsley keeper Piotr Skiba was at the forefront of the action in the first half as the Celts earned a superb victory at Thrsotle Nest over AFC Telford to move up to 13th in Blue Square North.

Skiba had a nightmare of an afternoon as he scored the visitors’ goal and later suffered a head injury.

He had made some fine saves in the game and was making another brave stop when he clashed with former Celt Damian Reeves just before half- time.

Reeves was leading the line for the visitors and he followed up when Skiba blocked his shot a minute before the interval. Skiba saved again but was left flat on the turf. Reeves and Farsley skipper Dominic Krief immediately summoned help.

Either bravely or foolishly, Skiba – following several minutes’ treatment – tried to carry on but lasted just over a minute. Midfielder Dave Syers took the gloves and Matty Young came off the bench to replace him.

It was 1-1 at that point with Farsley breaking the deadlock as early as the eighth minute when an attempted clearance was blocked and the rebound went to the unmarked Lee Ellington and he slotted in from eight yards.

Telford were back in the game in the 25th minute when Skiba had his ‘You Tube’ moment. He was well placed to gather a Reeves shot easily but as he turned to bowl the ball out to his left back it rolled out of his hand and into the net.

With a stand-in keeper between the sticks Farsley worked hard to ensure he was not put under undue pressure. They did that by taking the game to the visitors and they forced chances early in the second half.

The match swung within a two-minute spell that started on the hour. A swift break and an assured touch in the area preceded a superb finish from former City player Gareth Grant as he fired a shot in across the visitors’ keeper.

Grant’s second soon followed but this time the run and shot was from Roy Stamer, who had troubled the Telford defence all afternoon. Telford stopper Ryan Young could not hold Stamer’s effort and Grant followed up to force the loose ball home.

The scoreline was not added to but there was more late drama. Having turned stronger penalty appeals away, for both sides, the referee pointed to the spot as Farsley’s former Bantams defender Patrece Liburd made a saving tackle to halt Reeves four minutes from time.

Reeves spotted the ball himself but was denied a goal against his former employers because Syers parried the penalty kick and the ball was cleared.
