Platt ready to raise his game

Steve McNamara is tipping utility back Michael Platt to silence his critics in 2010.

Although the players have only been back at work for three weeks, Platt’s attitude and workrate have already caught the eye of the Bulls boss.

A rising star when he arrived at Odsal from Castleford in 2007, the Ireland international’s stock has dipped somewhat in the past year.

Unable to recapture the form that gained him Great Britain recognition in his first campaign at Bradford, the 25-year-old Salford academy product received his fair share of criticism from fans.

But after beginning pre-season with the bit between his teeth, McNamara is confident Platt can get back to his best for Super League XV.

“I’ve been very pleased with pre-season training,” said the Bulls chief.

“I’ve seen some huge improvements so far. Some young players will naturally get better and are making very good strides but some senior people have been outstanding too.

“Michael Platt has been great so far. We’ve been really impressed with his workrate and attitude. He is looking very determined.

“Everyone who gets a good pre-season behind them usually goes well at the start of the season.

“Michael ended last season well and he’s been working hard, so we expect big things from him.”

The Bulls’ younger squad members, including the likes of James Donaldson and Elliott Whitehead, are also staking a strong claim for a first-team spot.

“They are looking to compete for a place in the 17 at the moment,” said McNamara.

“We’ve got a very youthful-looking squad. Last season several younger players impressed us and we’re looking for them to keep on improving.”
