McNamara rules out England job

McNamara has refused to be drawn on speculation linking him to the vacant position as England head coach.

The Bulls boss turned his full attention to club duties on Monday after operating as Tony Smith’s assistant throughout the national team’s Four Nations campaign.

Smith resigned following England’s 46-16 final defeat against Australia but McNamara, who has been on the coaching staff for Great Britain and England since 2007, admits the timing is probably not right for him to step up.

McNamara said: “Any coach would love to be in charge of their own country at some stage but it might not be the right time for me.

“England is out of the way for me now. I enjoyed working with the team alongside Tony but my priority now is Bradford, I’m not even thinking about anything else.”

The Rugby Football League’s intention to appoint a full-time head coach seems to make McNamara an unlikely candidate.

John Kear and Justin Morgan have also been linked with the role but they too have club commitments, with Wakefield and Hull KR respectively.
