Glossop 1 Silsden 0
Silsden’s involvement in the Vodkat League Cup is over for this campaign following a narrow defeat at North West Counties Premier Division rivals Glossop North End.
Caretaker-manager Chris Reape can focus on his main aim, which is keeping the club clear of any relegation worries at this transitional time.
Glossop highlighted the gap between themselves and the beleaguered Cobbydalers by dominating long periods of play and creating by far the majority of chances.
The Cobbydalers worked hard and defended well but one chink in the armour was all Glossop needed and they won 1-0.
Silsden were under pressure early on as keeper Danny Thorpe and centre back Rob Morgan collided. The referee allowed play to continue and left back Danny McNulty had to clear the danger.
Glossop’s Rick Bailey shot wide after the visitors’ defence had backed off him and midway through the half he forced Thorpe into a good save. The keeper could only parry and two follow up efforts were blocked as Silsden threw bodies in the way.
Adam Oakes and Jason Gorton (twice) went close for the home side before the half-time interval.
Silsden’s best chance came at the start of the second half, a Harry Thompson cross was half cleared and Danny Finn rifled in a volley that North End keeper Matt Cooper did well to tip over.
The game was more even after the break but Glossop were getting closer to scoring and they eventually broke the deadlock. It came 14 minutes from time and after all the clear-cut chances it was a messy goal that won the tie.
Thorpe raced off his line but hesitated before reaching the ball as he expected the referee to give the visitors a free-kick for the challenge that led to the ball breaking. Glossop played on and the ball was crossed through the area by Jordan McNally. It appeared to be going in but just to make sure Darren Hamilton got an extra touch.
