Two late strikes peg back ’Sedge

LIVERSEDGE could have overhauled Premier Division hosts Dinnington Town with an away victory in the Kool Sport Northern Counties East League but had to settle for a 2-2 draw against the side just above them on goal difference.

’Sedge must have felt they were cruising as they earned a two-goal advantage early in the second half.

The only strike of the first period was Paul Walker’s drilled penalty after Joe Hewitt had been upended by the home keeper.

A matter of seconds after the break, Joel Etienne netted a 20-yard shot which screamed into the top corner. Walker was influential again as it was his lay-off that set up the midfielder.

The home side mounted a late comeback, with Grant Holt netting in the 72nd-minute before Kieran Gallagher headed in Mike Blythen’s cross eight minutes from time.

Meanwhile, ECCLESHILL UNITED are off the foot of Division One courtesy of a 3-2 away win as Chris Bates remained in caretaker charge, although it came in the face of a very late setback.

Appleby Frodingham took the lead in the 35th minute through Matt Robinson. The Eagles hit back in the second half but it was after the hour mark when Andrew Fieldhouse equalised.

Peter Dawson put the Eagles in front, only for James Atkinson to level with less than three minutes to go.

But Fieldhouse bagged the all-important goal that gave the visitors their first win of the season and moved them to four points, one above Hemsworth MW.

In the same section, BRIGHOUSE TOWN were the comeback kings of the weekend as they snatched all three points with a last-minute winner at Grimsby Borough.

After losing their previous two games 2-1, both at home, Town reversed the trend by digging out a victory by the same margin on the road.

They had to put an early setback behind them to bank their maximum, Borough scoring the opening goal when Lee Stephenson netted in the first minute.

The equaliser followed 79 minutes later and it came from the spot as Wayne Crossley slotted in a penalty.

Town’s desire showed and centre back Darryl Leach scored the winner with seconds remaining.

Town go back up the table to seventh and are now just four points off the summit, although they have played more games than most.
