Bradford Under-12 boys were promoted from Yorkshire Hockey Youth Division Three after two wins and a draw at the weekend.
In a fabulous team display, Bradford – with five debutants in the eight-man squad – kicked the day off with a 1-1 draw against Airedale.
Newcomers George Prescott, Carter Singleton, Logan Wood, Seb Shaw and Mark Roberts settled well, with Shaw scoring the Bradford goal, turning in a bobbly cross-shot from Alex Stewart.
Bridlington were next up, and were seen off 3-0.
A first-time sweep from Wood beat the keeper from a long way out to put them 1-0 up and, following one-two’s all the way down the right between Shaw and Stewart, the latter was left with an easy finish.
Stewart finished the game off with a good hard strike.
In their final match, Bradford beat Doncaster 3-1, with two more fantastic strikes from Stewart.
A stiff challenge awaits in Division Two but this got the season off to an excellent start.
Under the guidance of new coach Phil Bootland, from Wakefield, Bingley Bees have made a tremendous start to the new season.
Both ladies teams are undefeated. The 1st XI, playing in Yorkshire Division One, beat Leeds 2 2-1 in their first league fixture.
The match was characterised by excellent team-work and good utilisation of set-pieces, with both goals coming from penalty corners.
The second league game proved to be more challenging, with a 3-3 draw against Lockwood Dragons.
With seconds to go before full time, and trailing by a goal, Fran Nichols slipped the ball past the Lockwood goalie to rescue a point.
The 2nd XI are also flying high following two impressive wins in Division Three.
Leeds 3 were brushed aside 4-0 and Harrogate 3-1.
Not to be outdone, the men’s team have also made a good start to the season.
They beat Leeds 6 5-3 with goals from Matthew Clough (4) and Khalid Naseem. Clough was man of the match.
Unfortunately, Lady Luck was not smiling for the second match against Harrogate 4, who won 4-3, with both side’s keepers having excellent games. Clough was again named man of the match.
