Leeds Carnegie bowed out with pride intact from the Middlesex Sevens as their young team lost out 33-17 to the Marauders, the superstars of world sevens, in the second round yesterday.
Leeds beat London Wasps in the first round with a comprehensive performance, led by new signing Andy Gomarsall, who crossed for two tries in the 28-19 victory.
Joe Ford was another key player for Leeds but Leeds then had the misfortune of coming up against the Marauders, coached by former England coach Joe Lydon and including a host of stars from the IRB World Sevens circuit.
Their squad included Kenyans Collins Injera and Humphrey Kayange, who both scored against Leeds, as well as South Africa IRB World Sevens Series winners Ryno Benjamin, Marius Schoeman and Chase Minnaar, another try-scorer.
Leeds’ tries came from James Twomey, Oli Stedman and Scott Armstrong, Ford adding a conversion.
