Lowes set for shock return

James Lowes, pictured with the Powergen Challenge Cup, would be a popular figure with the Odsal faithful if he returned to the Bulls James Lowes, pictured with the Powergen Challenge Cup, would be a popular figure with the Odsal faithful if he returned to the Bulls

Bulls legend Jimmy Lowes is a front-runner for a dramatic Odsal return - after Steve McNamara ruthlessly sacked both his assistant coaches.

Shocked duo Lee St Hilaire and Basil Richards will leave at the end of the season, despite having a year left on their contracts.

Long-serving strength and conditioning coach Martin Clawson is also axed. After a decade at Odsal, he was told his current deal won’t be renewed in November.

Boss McNamara refused to confirm the news last night. He has come under tremendous pressure after the Bulls’ worst ever Super League campaign, with fans persistently calling for his head.

They are toiling in 12th spot, with just one win in seven games and are set to miss out on the play-offs for the first time, but he still has the backing of chairman Peter Hood.

McNamara seems set to remain in charge for the start of 2010 - the final year of his own contract - and it is his lieutenants who start paying the price for their dismal results.

The major clear-out of the backroom team opens the door for Lowes’ potential return as McNamara’s right-hand man.

The former Bulls hooker - who won every honour in the game with Bradford before retiring in 2003 - is a past team-mate of McNamara and they have also worked together in the England set-up.

Lowes started the season as head coach at Warrington Wolves after being promoted from assistant when Paul Cullen was sacked last year.

But after a poor start, Tony Smith came in as boss and Lowes has since effectively been his No 2.

Bulls fans dismayed by their side’s current malaise would undoubtedly love to see their charismatic hero involved again at Odsal.

Lowes still lives locally and he worked briefly in the role under Noble before leaving for Salford at the end of 2004.

Richards, who had previously operated part-time at the Bulls, was McNamara’s first appointment shortly after he replaced Noble, becoming Super League’s youngest head coach aged just 34 in April 2006.

St Hilaire joined soon after following a short stint at Wakefield Trinity Wildcats.

McNamara said: “I won’t speculate on any of my players or coaching staff.

“The position is as a whole group of players and staff we’ve all got jobs to do to the best of our ability until the end of the season.

“All our focus is on that.”

This would be great for the club for Jimmy to come back and give us a deserved kick in the pants, shame Macca not got the guts to resign but instead will use the assistants as scapegoats!!!
Who else will he bring in to help, would have been ideal position for Morro!!!
Hopefully Jimmy will bring back thr added steel we need and also a few decent players!!

Dont get your hopes up about Jimmy coming, cannot see this happening.
Why wud he want to leave working under Tony Smith who is a top class coach, also why wud he want to leave a team that is full of superstars and potential and a club with money to spend and a chairman that wants success to come to the whole at odsal that is getting worse season on season.

My guess is it could be a good move for Jimmy, If Macca continues to mess up and is sacked ( however unlikely) he could get the top job, as things stand at Wire he is likely going to have a long wait, Jimmy would be popular with the fans though, he really does have a passion for the game.

Seems a bit Much Macca sacking the assistants and staying in charge himself. is he saying its all their fault? if so he needs to take a look at himself, he employed them in the 1st place! they should all have gone as a package!

Glad to have him back but he wasn't a roaring success at Warington! Seems our intrepid local reporter has missed a signing! It says in the Guardian that we have signed Brett Kearney, a full back from Cronulla. Seemingly the T&A expert has missed it, along with news of Robbie signing for Leigh!

Who said that Macca doesn't have the bottle? Sacking the backroom staff (particularly the conditioner) is a masterstroke! I for one, stand and applaud Mr McNamara...finally a head coach with some bottle!

Hard to disagree with earlier comments that all these guys, apart from Clawson, were MacNamara's choices. Is there a vacancy for Head Coach at Hull FC (again??). Pity we didn't let him go there when we had the chance, and let him make his mistakes elsewhere! As regards his post, what a pity that on Sunday, the ideal Head Coach for us was in the Harlequins' dug-out! Brian Mac would be far better, as he knows how to get the best out of his players, something our illustrious leader knows nothing about!

We signed Vainikolo with after a season out with a knee injury. I mean he's no Volcano but every player gets injured at some point...fact is he's only 25, can play anywhere in the backline and anyone is better than Platt (who looks increasingly likely to be shipped out)

It would be fantastic if Jimmy came back! Better than the assistant coaches at the moment. I think Macca should have sacked himself along with the coaches though, and Hood should go too - he doesn't care about the Bulls.
How long has Macca's contract got? Is it another year? Could we afford the redundancy pay if he was sacked (although paying him off vs. the money we're losing from the falling attendance because our poor performances maybe we'd make more money to pay him off, improve performance and get bigger crowds, sponsors etc.)?

Hate to admit to a whino but your dead right.

And yes it was only yesterday when the clown in charge said lets stick together followed by sacking his "mates" the following day. what sort of message is he sending out? contradictory & indecisive and as others have mentioned he has blaimed his failings on those around him. Has he no shame? and exactly how much effort does he think those who he has sacked are going to put in between now and the end of the season? not much would be my guess

These two shouldn't have been allowed to continue for 3 years, if Macca did have the right support around him in his early career he might not have turned out to be such a poor of a coach as he is.

He's to stubborn and set in his own ways to change now, destined to be a low grade coach for the rest of his career once he's gone from Bulls withing the next season.

I cant wait.

Well said Adey.

Whilst I think some of the posts are sometimes tongue in cheek (well some of mine are), I agree with you entirely.

We mustn't forgoet that these changes have not been announced by the club yet, so some of this could be incorrect, or there could be a bigger picture that needs to be rolled out by the club.

No, but that makes us unique because (in SL) we've never sacked a coach before and if he turns it around he'll be the best thing since sliced bread. He's signing good younger players for next year, he's releasing the ones that haven't performed. Like I said, if we're top of the tree this time next year, who'll remember the poor season we had in 2009? and frankly, who'd care?

OK, you may not like the bloke but Macca isn't stupid. 12th position from a former championship side isn't acceptable, but at least he's trying to do something about it rather than jumping ship like a rat.
But Adey, you have to agree that Macca cant instill confidence in his team, is completely void on ideas, especially attacking options and support play, has brought a lot of nuggets to the side and his communication skills are hopeless. Yet he seems to be blaming all that on "HIS" coaching staff. So we should respect him for that should we?
I think most people on this site would give him maximum respect if he'd said "the buck stops with me and Im not good enough yet so I resign with immediate effect"

Hell, why stop there, lets get Matthew Elliott back as Chairman, Brian Smith as Chief Exec, Brad Mackay as conditioning coach, Matt Calland as backs coach, Sean O'Loughlin as Forwards coach....the way is forwards not backwards! Jimmy is and always will be an Odsal legend. Only Robbie Paul has shown the same amount of pride in the jersey as Lowes and if anyone is going to lay the law down in the camp its him.

I'm with you. Something appears to be happening, which has got to be better than the status quo and PR people trying to paper over the cracks using players as pawns to deliver the mantra.

Let's hope it's all for the best.
Thank you. Actually, I'm quite excited to see who comes into the backroom staff and the playing personel for 2010. We'll have the majority of the salary cap free, a new coaching team with new ideas and a bit of Bradford Pride wouldn't go amiss.

Notice that we're chasing Ben Westwood (another Bradford lad) for next year.

Confidence can't be that low, every player in the team still thinks we can make the playoffs haha!

I dunno what to think anymore. Whatever happens, happens. But it's not helpful asking for the coach's head every week...face it, he's staying so we have to like it or move on...

I think we should all remember that we are still a well respected club yes things have gone badly wrong for us but the money just has not been available to over spend like we did in our hay days. Things are now looking up, this seasons poor performances & dire results may well be the turning point. We will get good money for Burgess who lets be honest has not performed this season , Morrison who is a great professional but again he is on top money & has hardly played so again its a big saving next year off loading him he is a luxury we can not afford. So I for one am glad to see things changing at odsal Jimmy if its true will be a great buss for the supporters.I hope Noble does not get to come back to the club the Caisley Noble era brought trophys & glory but nearly bankrupted the club & dont forget he off loaded Price, Bridge , Ferris & Reardon to name a few & he also brought in Harris which was the biggest disaster this club has endured. We had virtually no youth development which is one area Macca has excell in. We have a flurry of youth up & coming so the future is not looking to bad. This season is a disaster & both Hood & Macca are to blame in a lot of ways but at least they seem to be doing something about it now.

A good move getting rid of the backroom staff but there is not a shred of evidence that Jimmy Lowes will be a good replacement. Loved him as a player, but we cannot take a chance and let sentimentality get in the way of a major Club appointment. Peter Hood should get an Aussie Coach signed up, if necessary put Macca back at number 2. I've said it several times on here, the best players and coaches (in abundance) are plying their trade in Australia and we need a coach from down there.

1- Its a start!
2- Lowes is NOT the solution (unfortunately)
2- Mcnamara is not fully to blame- The Noble era left us with no youth coming through(Burgess a rarity) and almost bankruptcy from a ridiculous signing of Harris that was not needed.
3. With the club keeping quiet there must be bigger wheels turning: hopefully Macca moving aside for someone else- somebody to do what Brian Smith did and revise us again and get structures in place that we have gone full circle away from. At least Macca has signed youth because otherwise by time its license time we will have no youth points, no stadia points and no recent contribution to the competition!
4- I know alot about NRL havin played a good level out there 2003-2007 but Kearney will not turn us around and neither sadly will lestrange. Is it just coincidence that the 2 signings the Bulls make were key guests at Menzies' dinner back in February??!!! The Beaver is perhaps playin a big part here as a means of him building up as a NRL coach eventually.
5. Whilst I have slowly lost patience and do think Macca is not up to it- there isn't many people available out there either because we also HAVE NO MONEY for players- thanks Noble! Unfortunately Brian Mac would never come he loves it at London it seems- Justin Morgan has more to do at KR and then will be in NRL and there aren't really the big names unemployed down under either- mcrae would be tempted but this is not a situation for his skills either. The ideal man is Brian Smith to wield the axe as he has at Newcastle and make shrewd signings... HMMMM SOUND FAMILIAR????!!!!
6. Without the councils support like at Warrington etc we will not move forward, we will never have an atmosphere, just fans who are glory hunters, do not sing and do not appreciate good defence (not that we have it this year!). It is hard to say but as a club we have always been overhyped- the majority of fans' knowledge is poor and at least slowly we are back at the supporter base that know the game.
7. We needed this as a wake up call and hopefully the wheel are turning toward starting over but as for big players... who would come to Odsal with no atmosphere, no fan base like Warrington or Leeds or, dare i now say it even Wigan- yes we BECAME WIGANERS! This will not be a quick fix and will need some money from somewhere and it wont start with the supporters.
8. Unlike Wigan we dont have the young players to drop anybody! Put Macca in charge of youth recruitment and bring in, as mentioned before, someone ruthless who can attarct names- also keep Beaver around to add to the attraction- although myself i would never want to play at Odsal but its too late once they land here!!!
9. Finally- all you asking for Noble- he has brought rubbish to Wigan and has accidentially landed on his feet with injuries to the likes of tim smith- and one other name for you all that he let go- RYAN ATKINS!!!!

and one final thing- all this talk from bradford fans about voting with feet etc- it sums the majority up... the best thing to do is turn up in record numbers for a hard hard game vs Huddersfield- where all the cash goes to them to show Hood what he is losing each week. 2nd, support the team in that game like there is no tomorrow to show as a club the fans are true fans (which the majority are not!).
Give the players the support for the game because effort from them is bound to stop when they have depressing odsal as a home ground- I fully belive thye can win with a massive former champions support from us at the galpharm. Finally, tie in with this plenty of banners to repair our club.- not abuse but stuff to get noticed by the camewras and get the bulls fans some respect within rugby league communities.

STATEMENT FROM BRADFORD BULLS BOARD
The Club's directors and the Head Coach wish to make it clear that, contrary to reports in today's Telegraph & Argus and that newspaper's website, Assistant Coaches Lee St Hilaire and Basil Richards have not been "ruthlessly sacked" and Strength and Conditioning Coach Martin Clawson has not been "axed". All three remain contracted to the Club until the end of the 2010 Super League season

Looks like reporter Dave Craven won't be getting an invite to the end of season Bulls bash - seems the board didn't appreciate words like "axed" and "sacked. Although they do seem to approve of the words: "They are toiling in 12th spot, with just one win in seven games and are set to miss out on the play-offs for the first time, but he still has the backing of chairman Peter Hood."
Anyway, bring back jimmy even if it's only to carry the water bottles onto the pitch - he'd do more for morale than any of the current set up have for the past 3 years

South,s are the worst footballing side in Australia, so going there would be a backward step for the youngster.Any way by the sound of it you need him more than Souths Do.Can any of your footballers play Aussie Rules, the Arial Ping Pong boys are desperate to sign players for the new Gold Coast side. But they must be good drinkers, womenisers and not too worried about the odd funny smoke. Also sounds like you have a couple of Aussie spies in the camp.

I bet Macca found it hard to keep a straight face when telling these guys they were sacked.

The buck always has to stop at the Head Coach.

He is the one who brings in the players, picks the team, and attempts to get the best out of them. Unfortunately he has failed on all counts.

I'm starting to think that Macca must have something on Hood.

Jimmy Lowes was a fabulous player for the Bulls but a hopeless coach at Warrington. They quickly saw the errors of their ways and replaced him with Smith. Hood/McNamara are clutching at straws. As for McNamara, he is gutless as well as clueless. Whilst the backroom boys were not up to it, the Captain and First Mate are the prime culprits and should have stood down. If the two stooges think that this is going to bring the fans back through the turnstiles they are mistaken. Mr McNamara, you are the problem. It's time to go.

i've been saying much the same for a long time. i'm a season ticket holder and have to jump through hoops to get some of the days off, but i do it and travel from hull to watch them. i will still travel to watch them, even though i am disappointed with this season and the performance of some of the big names. but i'm a bulls supporter through and through and always applaud most of the players off the field.
all i want from the players is for them to show pride and passion and to be honest that was what was missing on sunday.
i would like the coach to drop those players that aren't performing and we know who they are. lets get the young ones in for a run and the experience.
i don't want to see noble or caisley back, they nigh on broke this club financially. which big names did noble actually bring in that did anything for the club? not as many as he got rid of in one way or another.
