Hanson: I'll be City's bargain buy!

James Hanson can’t wait to start his career as a fully-fledged professional with his home-town club – but he must work his notice at the local Co-op first!

The striker, who signed a two-year contract with the Bantams yesterday, has been working behind the counter at Idle Co-op along with playing for UniBond League Premier Division side Guiseley.

I’m still coming to terms with it to be honest... It is a big step up but I’m more than confident I can make it

James Hanson

And the 21-year-old has to put in a few more shifts before his Valley Parade career starts in full.

Hanson said: “I am absolutely delighted to get a deal. It’s a dream come true.

“It certainly beats working until 10 o’clock at night.

“I’ve been working part-time at the Co-op near me and it’s just been fitting in with my semi-professional career.

“I’ve still got to work my week’s notice though and I don’t finish there until Wednesday.”

Hanson’s aerial presence has caught the eye in pre-season friendlies since he arrived on trial after scoring 44 goals in two seasons for Guiseley.

Before that, the former Beckfoot School pupil was plying his trade in the Northern Counties East League with Eccleshill United, having been released by Huddersfield Town at 15.

Hanson admits he is still pinching himself at earning a contract but believes he can justify the faith shown in him by boss Stuart McCall, whose side entertain Barnsley in their latest pre-season game tomorrow.

“I’m still coming to terms with it to be honest, playing with the sort of players that are here,” he admitted. “It is a big step up but I’m more than confident I can make it.”

Hanson revealed knowing Chris Brandon, who also comes from Idle, had helped him settle in during his trial.

He said: “He comes into the Co-op and we always used to chat as he knew I played for Guiseley and he used to ask how I got on.

“It’s been a bonus knowing him and I’ve been getting a lift with him every morning as he only lives across the road.”

Hanson also paid tribute to Guiseley for helping him climb onto the Football League ladder.

He said: “Mark Ellis at Guiseley was good to me. He taught me a lot about movement, which I didn’t know about at Eccleshill.

“I thought it was a big jump going from Eccleshill to Guiseley but the coaching there has progressed me into a better player and now I am ready to make the step up again.”

Having been offered a new contract at Nethermoor, compensation will have to be agreed between City and Guiseley.

Hanson – who has been handed the No 17 shirt for his first year – is the second non-league player to sign for the Bantams in a week following the capture of centre half Steve Williams.

Meanwhile, defender Paul Arnison has had his contract terminated by mutual consent.

The right back had slipped down the pecking order due to the arrivals of Simon Ramsden and Jonathan Bateson.

He has been training with Darlington and is expected to sign for them when they exit administration next week.

  • City’s squad numbers for this season: 2 Simon Ramsden, 3 Luke O’Brien, 5 Zesh Rehman, 6 Matthew Clarke, 7 Omar Daley, 8 Lee Bullock, 9 Gareth Evans, 10 Peter Thorne, 11 Chris Brandon, 12 Steve Williams, 13 Jon McLaughlin, 14 Michael Boulding, 15 Joe Colbeck, 16 Jonathan Bateson, 17 James Hanson, 18 Rory Boulding, 20 Leon Osborne, 21 Luke Sharry, 22 Rory Carson, 23 Luke Dean, 24 Louis Horne, 30 Matthew Convey.

Shut up fool, this is another great signing. We know Thorne has the experience, but he lacks speed, this home grown talent could be just what we need to give our attacking line up that extra bit of a bite.

Good Luck. Here's to more signings like this. Young, looking to progress. Instead of the has/never beens only joining City to steal a wage at the end of their careers.

Roll on August!

And Paul Showler was a PC, so what's your point? I'd rather we signed a lad like him who's willing to work for his chance, than some jumped up primadonna who's already on a big wage and would rather look further up the leagues anyway. Good luck to him. he's obviously worked hard for it.

Just another couple more signings to make now Stu. *Some people* (not me, I hasten to add...) are getting nervous and jittery, that we won't be ready in time, and with a decent enough team.

Really pleased and agree with most of the comments above. Was really annoyed watching people last year who didnt a give a dam about the club or their career as it was coming to an end.

Young and eager, has proven before he can make the step up to a higher level.

I hope Chris can also stay fit. If he can we will have 2 new signings and both of them will want to do themselves proud at the same time as the club.

Good luck James and Chris.

Personally I think this lad could quickly become a crowd favourite , he is young , energetic and quick , not afraid to throw himself about and reminds me very much of Geoff Horsfield when he played for Halifax Town.

Two players of his size in Grant Holt who looked head and shoulders above the rest of the Rochdale team when he played for them in early 2000's and Geoff when he played for Town all came from similar back grounds and given a chance.

I see no reason why this lad cannot go all the way , we are all behind you son getting better with every game and all I can do is wish you all the luck in the world.

Very happy local talent is given a chance hopefully a shrewd move by the manager but what concerns me is how much local talent has gone to waste? Like James he could of stayed playing non-league and I bet there's lots of local bradford true supporters dying for a chance and would be very good in this league. At least it shows we are now thinking the correct way

Good on this lad as well - amongst all the excitement he must have been feeling, he could have just let it go to his head, and walk out on his job, but no, he chooses to serve his notice - cracking attitude.

James Hanson knows what the real world is like, where he's had to work unsocial hours doing mundane work (no disrespect to the Co-op)like the vast majority of us supporters. I think he realises how fortunate he is to get this opportunity and the desire not to have to go back and 'work' for a living will be a massive motivator for him.

The very best of luck to you James, think about the rest of us whilst your getting paid for doing what you love.

Because you are such a big club (I think not). If Captain birdseye wasn`t so greedy half your team would have gone by now, publicly trying to get themselves a move. Typical scum fans trying to stir up trouble somewhere else. You are run by a Chelsea grandad get yourself on your own moronic message boards and leave ours well alone and get in the real world. Big club no more just on a par with town, not many places above us in the league! CTID!

This lad is unlikely to be an overnight success.

Do I care if he worked for a living before playing for City? No.

I really hope he tries his hardest and if he does and doesn't make it, he will still have achieved more than most. Don't resent him his opportunity, support him or keep quiet.

There are plenty in the world that don't work, sponge off the state and don't follow their abilities.

waynus71, BD6 says...

I am really pleased we have given the lad a chance and hopefully he will turn out to be our Grant Holt or Andy Bishop. He is a tall lad and can flick the ball on well. He seems to have a little skill too and knows where the 'onion bag' is.

However, (this isn't a dig), he isn't much better than Big Baz YET. The main difference is that Baz isn't going to learn or improve, whereas Hanson will.

Also, can I ask 'old peculiar', 'jb bantam and balbrigganfc' if they have actually seen Hanson play. They all claim Hanson will bring pace up front. WRONG!! He may be energetic, good in the air, but pacey? They have obviously seen something different to me. I have seen him in all three pre-season games to date and he definitely didn't show us any pace.

Looking at he squad numbers, it looks like McCall is resigned to the fact Colbeck could be going. He hasn't been given the number 7 or 11 shirt for the coming season. They have gone to both left wingers!

It is obvious he is still looking for a keeper and a midfield general to fill the number 1 and 4 shirts.

p.s. 'valleyofshame' please note that a fee will also have to be paid for Hanson. Another player where money will have to be spent! And... you will find we paid more than £15k for Evans. Macclesfield wanted £50k and turned down Lincoln's offer of £30k, so I can't see them accepting a lower bid from us...Can you?

Bradford1903, The Kop says...

Certainly worth the gamble I think Stuart, he certainly won't be on much wage wise, and will hopefully become a major find.

The fact that Stuart has given him a 2 year contract, as opposed to the obligatory 1 year deal suggests he clearly rates him.

Now all we need is a keeper, 2 centre midfielders, and a winger!

"Shut up fool" - I didn't know that Mr T was a city supporter. He'll be ok so long as we don't get in Europe, as he won't be getting on no plane.

I think the comment was a bit tongue in cheek, there must be a number of semi pro footballers out there, who are good enough to make the grade, but haven't been given the opportunity.

After all Windass was still a brickie in his early 20's.

Ian Wright, Crystal Palace, Arsenal and England centre-forward;Gary Birtles,Nottingham Forest, Manchester United and England;Steve Heighway, Liverpool and the 'infamous' Vinny Jones.
Just 4 examples -to add to the above named- of Footballers in their twenties who, through being able and willing learn and develop became top-class/succesful footballers.

Yes, I accept that a fee will be paid for Hanson. Point taken over the Evans, I could not see anything printed saying what fee we will have paid.

These lads have all been out of contract and its only down to the fact of the newish regulations for players under 23. Granted money has exchanged hands, but I still (maybe I am being blinkered or old fashioned) don't recognise them fully as transfer fees. Maybe I should.

Anyway, in resepct of my question I posed to you about Rory, what do you think?

Sorry, i missed the question. I assume you were referring to;
"If we were not seeking to buy Michael, what chance do you think there would have been City actively going out and buying Rory? If we would have, why?"
The answer is no, we wouldnt have signed him had we not been interested in his brother.
We dont even look like being able to get him out on loan. Even mansfield havent made an enquiry for him.
