Paul Arnison is looking to quit Valley Parade for first-team football.
City’s summer swoop for Simon Ramsden from Roch-dale and Blackburn youngster Jon Bateson has pushed Arnison well down the pecking order at right back.
The former Carlisle defender is only halfway through a two-year contract but accepts his days are numbered and has put out feelers elsewhere.
Arnison said: “I knew the manager was bringing in a right back for competition but when two came in, it was time for me to move on.
“I don’t want to leave the club but things don’t always work out as you want. I’m 31, nearly 32, and at my age I just want to be playing.
“I’ve spoken to the gaffer and he knows the situation. If I can find a club, and it’s amicable for both parties, then I will look to go somewhere and hopefully play regularly again.”
Arnison is reluctant to relocate his family from the north-east. He has already sounded out Colin Todd’s Darlington and former club Hartlepool but without success.
He added: “Nothing’s really happening at the moment. I’m just training and working hard and waiting to see if something will come off.
“Right backs are not normally a priority area. It’s different if you’re a centre forward, central midfield or a goalkeeper because they are more sought-after.
“And it’s hard with that many players trying to find a club, especially in the credit crunch.”
Arnison played 28 games last season but found himself pushed out of the side for spells by loan imports TJ Moncur and Zesh Rehman.
The arrival of Ramsden, who ironically travels down with him to training, as first choice has confirmed his decision to seek a fresh start.
Arnison said: “I’ll still be professional because you never know what might happen. If you get injuries, suspensions or loss of form then things could change.
“You’ve got to be fit and keep ticking over because clubs can come in at any time. But I am finding it tough because every footballer just wants to play.
“It’s hard when you’re out injured so to not be involved at all is not what you want.
“If it means taking a pay cut to go somewhere, then that’s fine. I just want to be out on the pitch.”
Meanwhile, Guiseley striker James Hanson was due to hook up with City at training today after returning from holiday.

Sorry Simon Parker, but this is your best 'nothing' story of the close season yet.....we are not remotely interested in players who are looking to leave the club. Instead, we want to know who is coming in. Why can't you be asking the club about Steve Jones for instance or any other potential transfer targets. This story is nothing more than a column filler!

seems like he never committed as his wife and kids live in the north east--was he actually commuting daily to train? was he training away from City for most of the week. Whatever became of the policy of ensuring the players lived within a "reasonable" distance from the club? Not sure anyone will take him off us:perhaps he will negotiate a termination of his contract. i.e a cancellation. Watch this space for no news on that front:he will be happy to stay for another season being paid a good wedge for not playing!!

Players have mouths to feed, mortgages to pay. He was the one given the two-year deal and I suspect he's on a lot less than you think.
