Rehman says City still team to beat

Zesh Rehman reckons City are still there to be shot at next season despite slashing their budget.

Rehman was one of several players to take a pay cut when he signed a two-year deal at Valley Parade.

But despite the more realistic approach being adopted within the club, the Bantams will still be viewed by the rest of League Two as the team to beat.

Rehman said: “I agree with the manager that the expectation level won’t be as high. We haven’t got the biggest budget in the league.

“But people will still see Bradford as a scalp. They will be desperate to put one over us, so we’ll have to be bang on our game every week.

“We are the biggest club in the division by a country mile. I associate Bradford City with the Premiership days and a lot of other clubs probably do as well.

“You just have to look at the size of the stadium and the crowds that we get every week. Of course teams are going to raise their game playing in front of crowds of 12,000-13,000 when they are used to only 2,000.

“But that’s the challenge that we face. This is a big club and we’re desperate to give the fans some success. That takes time but my ambition is to help Bradford back up the leagues.”

Rehman is one of the four summer signings that Stuart McCall has made but, having spent the second half of last season on loan at the club, he already felt at home.

Having missed out on the play-offs by two points, he sees no reason why City cannot be in contention again.

Rehman said: “We were not a million miles away from it. We’ve just got to make our home a fortress again and look to be a bit more solid away.

“But last season has gone now. We need to learn what we can and try to take it on board.

“Pre-season is coming up and I can’t wait to get going again. I’m looking to knuckle down in the area and then do my best for the team.

“I thought it went well in the three months here on loan despite not going up. I really enjoyed it and that’s why I threw my hat into the ring to come back here.

“I’m confident in my own ability and I believe my experience of playing at every level will help. But what happens with Bradford is about the team and not individuals.”

The news stories are obviously even slower than normal at VP. This interview took place over a week ago and yet becomes the main footballing story of the day.

"Pre-season is coming up and I can’t wait to get going again".

Why hasn't Parker interviewed McCall for possible transfer targets (he doesn't have to get names, only that he is still looking for players in certain positions). How come he hasn't interviewed McCall on Lee's departure or who will replace him as captain? Why hasn't Parker found out what the situation is with Steve Jones? Are we still interested in bringing him back to VP or not?

Come on Parker do your job and stop feeding us this garbage.

I've started looking at newsnow.co.uk for our stories. Every other site other than the T & A and the clubs official site seem to have related stories first. Up ya game Parker!!!!

Fair point, but I think you will find we have sold just over 9,000 tickets for the coming season.

Also, the season before, we were aiming for 10,000 tickets before the BOGOF kicked in. That never happened as we ended up with less than 10,000 sold. However, we still managed to get average crowds of 12,700. Therefore, whatever the figure sold to date, you can add another 3,000 to that on a match day.

I am sure we will still be getting crowds of around 12,000 for the coming season AND if we get off to a good start, we may attract a few more.

How does "Pre-season is coming up and I can’t wait to get going again. I’m looking to knuckle down in the area and then do my best for the team" represent meaning 'actual games'???

This interview was taken a few weeks back and was almost word for word on his own 'blog'!

Discarded Carlisle United midfielder Grant Smith could be on a collision course with Blues boss Greg Abbott again after joining Bradford City on trial.

Grant SmithSmith blasted the United manager for freezing him out of the first-team picture at Brunton Park last season, leading to his release in April.

Now he has linked up with the Bantams – and could face Abbott’s side in a pre-season friendly next month.

Well-travelled Smith, 29, joined up with Stuart McCall’s squad for the start of pre-season training last Thursday and is trying to earn a contract with the League Two club.

Carlisle go to Valley Parade for their final pre-season game on Saturdya, August 1.

There is little love lost between Smith and Abbott after the midfielder launched a stinging attack on the Carlisle boss when he left the club before the end of last season.

He accused Abbott of “double standards” regarding his lack of first-team opportunities.

“It was personal, rather than about my football,” Smith said. “As a manager you have got to be a people person, but I didn’t get that from him .”

I wish players/staff wouldn't come out with these sort of statements ie 'team to beat' etc!! We have lost two of our best players from last season (Law, Furman) without replacement and we have kept Matt Clarke (who wasn't up to it last season) so, unless we make probably three more crucial signings before the start of next season, I tend to feel it's going to be an uphill, struggle, not impossible, but not one to brag about either!! Nevertheless, I will be there as a season ticket holder 'keeping the faith'
