Ferres delighted to extend deal

It might be mid-summer but former Bull Brett Ferres will arive at Odsal on Sunday with a spring in his step.

The 23-year-old second-row forward has agreed a new extended contract with Castleford Tigers which runs until the end of the 2012 campaign.

England international Ferres signed a three-year deal when he moved to The Jungle last November but had a ‘get-out’ clause after his first season.

However, by signing the new deal, Ferres had indicated that he wants to stay with the Tigers.

A former scholarship player with Cas, local boy Ferres was a fan of the club as a youngster.

His first professional contract was with the Bulls (2005-2006) and he then had two seasons with Wakefield Trinity Wildcats.

Ferres, who has scored an impressive eight tries in 18 appearances in 2009 for the Tigers, said: “I was very happy to join my home-town team in the close season and equally happy to commit myself to the club for another three years beyond this year.

“I have really enjoyed my first term at Cas and at our best we have shown that we can match most teams in the competition, and we are still in the play-off hunt.

“I’m pretty happy with my own form this season, although you are always looking to improve, and everything tells me that the club is moving in the right direction, and I want to be part of that.”

Castleford coach Terry Matterson said: “This is very good news for the club and I am pleased that Brett has committed himself.

“I have been very impressed with his efforts since joining the club.

“He is very professional in everything that he does and I’m sure that he isn’t too far away from a recall to the England squad.”

* Castleford have promised to ban anyone that threw a bottle onto the field in the direction of Catalans players after last week’s loss to the Dragons.
