Ramsden starting afresh at City

Simon Ramsden is hoping his switch to City can cure two years of play-off heartache.

The right back has twice seen his League Two promotion dreams dashed at the death with Rochdale.

Fourteen months ago he was a Wembley loser against Stockport, while last season Dale were knocked out in the play-off semi-finals by eventual winners Gillingham.

Ramsden admitted it was a bitter blow to swallow – which is why he is determined his first term at Valley Parade will provide a happier ending.

“The season just gone was worse than the time before because at least you’d had the achievement of going to Wembley,” he said.

But to go close again and get beaten was a huge disappointment and I would have thought it affected the lads there all through the summer.

“But once you’re back for pre-season, that’s all gone and you’ve got to start afresh.

“I’ve come here with the hopes and expectations of getting out of this division. That’s what everybody is talking about and we really need to do it this season.”

Ramsden admitted it was tough to quit Spotland but knows he has joined a bigger club.

“Everything at Rochdale was great and the management have been brilliant with me but when a club the size of Bradford comes along, you can’t turn down that opportunity,” he said.

“The expectation level is a lot different. At Rochdale it would be a huge achievement to get promoted, whereas here the expectation is that you do get promoted.

“A club this size doesn’t want to be in this division and the challenge is to get out, whether it be automatically or through the play-offs. It’s a different scenario for me but one I’m really looking forward to.

“You want to be playing in front of the big crowds week in, week out. That’s what being a footballer is about and you’ve got to thrive on the pressure that comes with it.”

Ramsden, who previously played for Grimsby, was joined by fellow new boys Gareth Evans and Jon Bateson as Stuart McCall put his squad through their paces at a sweltering Marley Stadium in Keighley yesterday.

Ramsden said: “It’s always a bit strange starting at a new club but I felt welcome straight away. Once you get the first few days out of the way, it just becomes normal again.

“Pre-season doesn’t get any easier, no matter what club you are at, but everyone nowadays knows to come back fairly fit because you’re straight into the running.

“The lads seem to be in good spirits and got through it fine. You help those that aren’t so fit to get through because we’re all in it together and it’s good for building team morale.”

McCall is also casting his eye over three trialists – former Carlisle utility player Grant Smith, Macclesfield central midfielder Jordan Hadfield and centre half Steve Williams, who has been playing non-league for Fleetwood and Bamber Bridge.

Smith, 29, is the son of Gordon Smith, the striker immortalised by the commentary for his missed sitter for Brighton against Manchester United in the 1983 FA Cup final.

The left-sided Scot was at Sheffield United with McCall and featured alongside Paul Arnison in the Carlisle side beaten by Leeds in the play-offs in 2008.

Smith can play on the wing, at left back and would also offer cover as a left-sided centre half.

Hadfield, 21, is hoping to fit the bill in McCall’s search for an energetic, tigerish central midfielder.

He played in the same Macc team as Evans but also spent a month on loan at Blue Square Premier outfit Altrincham during the middle of last season.

Paul McLaren was unwell missed yesterday’s session, while Peter Thorne returns for duty on Monday.

Give over Mr Parker we know were daft but were arent stupid. I wonder if he makes a remarkable recovery to get off his sick bed to sign for somebody else in the next few days.

Some of the names touted in this article don't exactly inspire the thought of a promotion seeking outfit - 'Steve Williams has been playing for Fleetwood & Bamber Bridge & Jordan Hadfield was loaned out to Altrincham'. I suppose if we unearth a couple of hungry players then it will work to our advantage. It's just a little demeaning that the club with the biggest attendances by far are scrapping around in 'Poundland' for players.I'm also at a loss to know why a club such as Notts Co could be on the verge of being taken over by a middle east consortium. You would think that with our recent past & the gates we get that we would be ripe for such a bid!?

At least Ramsden won't have to worry about play off heart break this season. With stars from Fleetwood and Macclesfield reserves due to sign im sure we can avoid getting anywhere near the play-offs

I personally don't want any sort of take over on principle. If City were 'bought' by a middle eastern consortium i'd probably stop going. It's not what football should be about and it's ruining the game.

Also, we're looking at lower leagues for young talent. Last seaosn Stu was criticised for signing 'journey men' in the words of posters on this site instead of looking at the lower leagues for stars of the future. Now he's doing that he's also being criticised.

So, if he can't go for older, experienced players, and he can't go for young unproven players, who exactly should he go for? Premiership players?

For every batch of lower league players a gem always pops up so as with the previous two posters there is no harm in giving it a go. I was one to criticise many things that McCall did last season but I always posted that he should dip into the lower leagues so I support him in his approach. Let him bring in the players and when the season is well underway we can judge him by the teams position. Why some people already right our chances off when a ball hasn't been kicked in anger yet is beyond me.

Somehow I don't think our wonderful manager is going to find too many gems at Fleetwood a Macclesfield reserves.Wouldn't it be awful if we got a middle east takeover? Mccall would then have even less idea if he had money to spend. Bring on the Fleetwood reject!

Williams played in the same league as Hanson last year but no-one complained about giving this lad a chance. I think its refreshing, and does no harm at all giving these hungry players a chance!! Ince briefly took Hadfield to MK Dons with him so must have rated him, and the other lad prvides cover for exactly where we are short in the squad. All this for minimal expenditure? How dare you McCall lol

captain grumpy, Queensbury says...

Yes but Hanson is Guisleys star man and they want to keep him. However Fleetwood have got shut of this player. Its the bit about the Macclesfield reject being on loan at Altrincham that kills me, is if that makes all the difference.

Fair point, but still does no harm. People go wayward especially when young.

Now you complain because we are looking at players from the lower leagues. Just shut up and let's see who of anyone is signed and see how they perform before you start pulling them & the management to pieces

I don't think you would find many outsiders wanting to put major money into BCFC because we don't own our ground for a start and we have a poor record of being badly run in the past IE 2X administrations, whic
h leaves a stigma attached to us but as you say potentially the size of Bradford, modern ground, ETC we would be ripe for a take over ??.

I completely agree.

Theres nothing more satsfying than seeing a team built by Bradford fans in McCall/Jacobs and Lawn/Rhodes.

I would hate to support a team funded by business men who just want to make money (no matter how much cash they pump in).

We need to take a gamble on a few younger players and add a bit of experience to the side too.

McClarens illness surely means he is talking to other clubs , couple that with Lee's departure and we should start to see a few people coming through the door who will bring some much needed quality and freshness to the squad.

Firstly, we haven't signed any of these boys. They are simply training with us on a trial basis. If they aren't good enough, this will quickly become clear and they will be sorted out. By letting them train with us, what are we losing?

Secondly, how many times have young lads dropped out of the league, but the been picked up, given a second chance and made a fist of it. I know of a few. Had Nicky Law not joined us on loan last year, he may well have been playing conference football this season.

Get off McCall's back. The signings made so far (during pre-season) are good and he is right to offer trials to young lads that want to do well. We just might find a gem whilst on trial with us.

if you are not signing journeymen pros you have to take a chance with young unknown players.

get off SMs back on this one--we do not want journeymen pros milking the club and putting in indifferent performances.

Get these youngsters in:get behind tham and give them a chance: and that is not a game here or there.
Pert of SM's job is to get these players here, develop them and good riddance to journeymen pros but, as supporters, we have to give them a chance and forgive their mistakes etc:
