Lions set to sign top midfielder

Guiseley are claiming an early victory over their local rivals as they prepare to unveil a mystery midfield signing.

Lions boss Steve Kittrick says the player, from higher up the non-league ladder, should be revealed later this week.

“We have a quality midfielder from a higher league all but signed,” said Kittrick.

“I’m sure some of our local rivals will be very disappointed to hear that news because I know at least one of them was hoping he would sign for them.”

Kittrick also confirmed that Nethermoor is undergoing a huge transformation ahead of the new season.

Building work was always expected after the main stand was damaged in a suspected arson attack last summer.

But Kittrick explained: “The work at the ground is not just on the stand, it goes a lot further than that.

“The concrete footings for the main stand have gone in, the new floodlights have arrived at the ground after the old ones were taken away and the club have spent a lot of money on the playing surface.

“It has been a massive undertaking and everything looks to be on track. We are sure the ground will be ready for the Carlisle United pre-season game towards the end of next month.”

But while that fixture will take place, it seems certain the Lions’ trip to Scarborough Athletic is doomed.

Guiseley had been pencilled in to visit last season’s Northern Counties East League Division One champions a day before former Bantam Greg Abbott was due to bring Coca-Cola League One outfit Carlisle to Nethermoor.

“There has been a lot of speculation about the Scarborough game and even our own website has not been clear about it,” admitted Kittrick.

“It looks like a classic double-booking situation. Apparently one of our directors was asked if we could provide opposition and it was taken as confirmation.

“But it was supposed to be the day before the Carlisle game and there is no way we could play two games in two days.

“I don’t want to be disrespectful to Scarborough but Carlisle is a bigger game for us, they are coming to us and we will, hopefully, make some money from it.

“It wouldn’t be fair for us to send a reserve or predominantly under-19s side to Scarborough, so we will contact them in the next few days and try to arrange a visit there next pre-season.”
