Forward-thinking Halley provides helping hand

Dave Halley today revealed how the Bulls’ outside backs have vowed to take the heat off their forward team-mates.

The elusive full back starred in Sunday’s win at Warrington Wolves with a series of ground-eating runs to get his side on the front foot.

Every time speedster Halley coolly defused kicks he seemed to evade tackles and surge up field.

Both he and wingman Rikki Sheriffe chalked up massive stats of more than 200 metres each while Semi Tadulala also made plenty of impact on the left flank, meaning Bradford’s pack was fresh to rip into the Wolves.

One of the most important aspects in Super League now is for the back three to make metres when sets are started

Dave Halley

“Doing that helps those lads, especially in hot conditions like Sunday,” said the in-form Wales international, who has bagged the man-of-the-match award two weeks running.

“If our forwards are having to run back 40 metres and turn around to work the ball out it makes it all a lot harder.

“One of the most important aspects in Super League now is for the back three to make metres when sets are started.

“That’s what me, Rikki and Semi tried to do at Warrington and all three of us really enjoyed it out there.

“Along with Platty, we all got together on Sunday and had a look at some video of Warrington to watch their kicking and see how we could get our sets off on a roll, and it worked well.”

But equally impressive was the Bulls’ goal-line tackling as they kept an in-form Wolves offence muzzled right up until the 54th minute.

“It was the best defensive performance we’ve put up all year,” Halley admitted, who had been part of the side that shipped 58 points against the same opponents in April.

“You have to do that these days as there are so many good attacking players, especially in that Warrington side.

“We’d spoke about that a lot during the week and they did really test us. We were on our own try-line for most of the first half and it’s massive for our confidence.

“We know we can do it and defend like that and it proved the case on Sunday.

“We’ll be tested again this weekend when Saints come here but I can’t wait to play again.

“They’re on form but we’re hitting some form too.”

Leaders St Helens will be formidable opponents but if the Bulls – now just a point off the play-off places – can repeat such defensive solidity, and Halley’s fast feet continue doing the talking, a third straight win is easily within their grasp.

Halley has been playing well all season, runs the ball back with pace and straight which is something Platt never does,

I hope they can carry some confidence and form in to the saints game, it will be very tough against them but we have beaten them once so lets see if we can do it again, we will have to cut the errors in attack and be massive in defence if we are to stand any chance of backing up against saints. COYB!!

There is one thing I’d like to mention those of you who listened to the game on the radio must have heard it :- COM’ON YOU BULLS, COM’ON YOU BULLS, it sounded like the 14th man was on good form as well, I believe it makes a massive difference to the lads knowing that they are there,
So it’s up to us lot to turn up on Sunday and be the 14th man again and shout with passion and pride,
COM’ON YOU BULLS.

Has done enough to deserve the No.1 jersey in 2010 in my opinion. A lot has been said on here about his lack of physical presence but he's everything you need in a fullback. He returns the ball well, the defence looks a lot better organised with him shouting from the back and he's becoming quite a decent pivot when he comes into the line, passing well and, as he showed against Leeds earlier this year, he hasn't got a bad short kicking game.

Deserves a 3-year deal and deserves the No.1 shirt next season.

Couldnt listen to game on Sunday. I see the above article mentions " Halley seemed to evade tackles and surge upfield" That is good news indeed as evading tackles has been a problem for Dave and as a result, he too has run accross the line too often.
I agree he would be a class act if he can run straight as he has the pace.

I have always thought his lack of size is a problem and I suspect you will see this when he plays against Saints and Leeds. I hope I'm wrong. I do seem to be negative in my comments these days but lets face it there has been little to be positive about this season. A 'double' over Saints and Leeds will soon have me singing the praises of the team and maybe those of Macca too!! COYB!!

All i'll say is his size is no different lesser than that of Webb, Slater, Bowen and Stewart. Even Motu Tony at Hull has played Fullback. Clearly size isn't everything.

I thought Halley was superb at Warrington and he needs to be signed on a longer term deal before other clubs start siffing around.
Perhaps needs to bulk up a bit at the expense possibly of some speed but you can only see him getting better.
It does leave a problem with Platt who looks worse in other positions than he does at full back!

Don't get used to Dave Halley at fullback he's signed for Hull for next season.

Hi Adey, I don't want to knock Dave. I truly believe his size is an issue.

The players you mention are mostly a bit bigger than Halley but more importantly (as I have said often) they are also in a different class. Yes you can be small and good but you do need to be an exceptional player. I hardly think it's fair to inferr Halley is anywhere near as good as Webb,Slater,Bowen,St
ewart or even Motu T. Remember a good big 'un will ALWAYS be better than a good little 'un!. Never a truer saying in any sport. On the positive side, Young Keiran Hyde has the stature and promise to take over as the Bulls No 1.

As you will know Adey. If Halley can turn it on at F/B against Saints and or Leeds. I will be the first to admit I was wrong.

I really do hope Macca signs Halley on. There is little doubt in my mind he is one of the best players so far this season, note one of! He feels me with more confidence at full back than Platt does. Shame Platt has another 2 years of his contract left...should certainly be the other way round. I liked Platt in the beginning and he showed real promise but I'm afraid his confidence has taken a knock and Halley is showing him how it should be done. Please Macca don't let this guy slip away!!

if this it correct then it would be huge mistake by macca, he is quality, is home produced too, Still we can always rely on PRATT to reclaim the no1 shirt, we are stuck with him for another 2 years afterall!!

This is utter rubbish, NOKNOWLEDGE you have seen nothing. Halley has not signed for Hull or Cas. Wait and see, it will become clear what signed pre-contract this person has seen. This person is just a rumour monger. Halley is by far the best full back the bulls have seen in a very long time. Macca is an idiot if he lets him go. Time will tell if Macca is an idiot or not.

Why do you always refer to me? Do you fancy me or something?

Just to let you know, Dave didn't need to go out on loan, he has always been as good as he is playing now, Macca just loves Platt and wanted to give him game time.

Now he's seen the error of his way and realised Dave is much better he's decided to play him.

Thats all.

No.

As Dave has admitted, due to his illness in the off season he came back unfit compared to Platt. So he was loaned out to regain full fitness.
