Bingley Harriers' lady vets won the National Road Relay Championships at Birmingham’s Sutton Park, with a 200-yard victory over Redhill.

Helen Livingstone led off, bringing the team home tenth, in 18min 57sec. Ruth Whitehead clawed several places back, a second faster.

Sarah Jarvis on the third leg did the damage, with a time of 17min 4sec. That left anchor woman Sue Becconsall to finish in exactly 18min to gain the gold medal for the over-35s.

Most clubs led off with their strongest runners, whereas Bingley’s policy paid dividends.

Airedale Athletics won their first team prize, coming first in Sunday’s inaugural Halifax Town Centre 5k to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the founding of the home club.

Belgrave Harriers’ Mark Miles won in an outstanding time of 15min 2sec. Baildon’s Quentin Lewis was third in 17min 14sec.

The Airedale trio of Hardy Matamala (fifth in 17.30), Gerard Mills just behind, and Will Kerr (eighth in 17.49) held off a strong home Halifax Harriers team.

The Roberttown 7-miler on Sunday saw a fine sixth place for Rogan Ashton, competing for his new club, Otley AC. Eccleshill’s Claire Elener was fourth lady home, in 49min 16sec.

The Kildwick Fell Race suffered from a short, heavy shower at the starting line. The runners were frozen and the course muddy and slippery throughout.

The various obstacles – whiplash trees, gates, stiles, canal bridges, steps and sharp bends to the finishing funnel – kept the runners alert throughout.

Wharfedale’s Jonnie Bradshaw (26min 2sec) – in a close finish with Ilkley’s Tom Adams – and Pendle’s Emma Spencer (31min 4sec) were victors among the 105 largely local competitors. Bingley’s Mary Webb was delighted to be first blue-and-white hoop lady home, for the first time.

The Harewood House Chase 10k takes place on Sunday, with runners allowed to enter on the day.

The race – in the grounds of the Harewood Estate – brings together runners of all abilities over a multi-terrain course.

The race is organised by Bingley Harriers in memory of their members Judith and Keith Firm and is in its 11th year.

The women’s race starts at 10.30am and the men’s at 11am. Registration and changing facilities are in the Village Hall.
