After a gap of almost 20 years, the noise of screeching wheels accompanied by cheering crowds is returning to Cleckheaton.

Competitive quad roller hockey is back at Whitcliffe Mount Sports Centre.

Spen Valley Flyers’ Roller Hockey Club are joining the Northern Counties League in July, and have entered teams at under-11s, under-13s, under-15s and under-17s, as well as at senior level.

The club’s coaching director Dan Messenger explained: “Spen Valley Flyers was formed through working in partnership with Kirklees school sports co-ordinators and we have held taster sessions for over 4,000 pupils from local schools since last June.

“Whitcliffe Mount Sports Centre have also been extremely supportive and we are now registering the Spen Valley Flyers Roller Hockey Club in the Northern Counties League.

“All the children are really looking forward to playing competitively against teams from Manchester, Middlesbrough, Sheffield, Grimsby and Halifax.”

Whitcliffe Mount is now the site for the first centre of excellence for roller hockey in the country and those interested can attend training there on Saturdays (5pm-6.30pm under-13s, 6.30pm-8pm over-13s and adults).
